Last updated November 2026: Bali to Gili trips usually mean a fast boat from Padang Bai, because the Gili Islands have no airport. Expect roughly 4 to 5 hours door to door and one-way fares of about Rp390k to Rp700k, both approximate. Our island-by-island Gili guide helps you decide where to land.

Quick answer: Bali to Gili at a glance

Every route ends with a boat, whether it leaves Bali directly or starts in Lombok. Fast boats are the standard choice. Slower options suit tight budgets or rough seas. All figures below are approximate and come from a single operator-side guide, so confirm them before you book.

Fast boat from Padang Bai: what to expect

Departures run daily from Padang Bai. Most operators offer hotel pickup from areas such as Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and Ubud. The crossing itself takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, though some operators quote up to 2.5. Many boats call at Gili Air and Gili Meno before Gili Trawangan. Confirm the stop order with your operator instead of assuming it. One snippet describes the service as a fast boat, not a traditional public ferry, so do not expect a car deck or a walk-on ticket counter.

  • Eka Jaya Fast Ferry: check vessel size and number of daily departures.
  • BlueWater Express: check crossing time and what the fare includes.
  • Gili Gili Fast Boat: check whether the boat serves your island directly.
  • D'Camel Fast Ferry: check the fare against pickup inclusion.
  • SemayaOne Fast Cruise: check departure times and stop order.
  • Fares across these operators overlap, so compare inclusions rather than headline prices.

Choosing your departure from Bali

Sponsored

Your hotel area decides the real length of the trip. The 4 to 5 hour figure assumes hotel pickup from places like Canggu, Seminyak or Ubud. Driving yourself to Padang Bai means you carry the traffic risk. Weekends and holidays are worst, so add a buffer. Private transfer prices were not available in our sources, so ask your hotel for a quote. Some operators also sail from Sanur and Serangan, with seasonal departures from Nusa Lembongan. Those usually take longer than Padang Bai because of extra stops. A Candidasa pickup appeared in one snippet, but it is unverified, so confirm it with the seller before relying on it.

Tip

Pickup from Canggu or Seminyak sits on top of a crossing of about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Which Gili island to land on

Trawangan has the social scene and the most beachfront dining. Air mixes cafés, dive shops and a slower pace. Meno is the quietest. Each island is only a short boat ride from the others, so you can hop later. Compare Trawangan versus Air if you are torn between nightlife and calm. Read Air versus Meno if quiet matters most.

Budget and slower routes: ferry via Lombok, flights

The public ferry leaves Padang Bai for Lembar every 60 to 90 minutes and crosses in about 4 to 6 hours. Fares start around Rp40k. Seats are not always guaranteed, and sailings fill up on public holidays. From Lembar, a taxi or shuttle to Bangsal harbor takes 1.5 to 2 hours and costs about Rp300k to Rp400k. A public boat then covers the last 30 to 45 minutes from about Rp25k. Total time passes 10 hours, so skip this if your schedule is tight. Flying Bali to Lombok takes about 40 to 45 minutes. Fares start near Rp620k. Add check-in, a Rp250k to Rp400k taxi to Bangsal and the boat, and the day runs about 7 hours. See Lombok International Airport for airport details. Read our flying across to Lombok notes if Lombok is part of the plan. Weigh a longer stay there with Bali versus Lombok. Check the last boat from Bangsal before booking a late flight, since missing it can mean a night in Lombok.

Booking tips and what's included

Book at least a day ahead. You can buy directly from the operator, through your accommodation, on booking platforms or at local agencies in Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta and Ubud. Compare inclusions, not just price. A slightly higher fare with pickup can beat a cheap ticket plus a taxi. Pickup times can shift after booking, so keep the agent's contact details. Public ferry tickets are usually bought at the terminal on the day.

  • Hotel pickup and exact pickup window
  • Luggage allowance
  • Harbor fee included or not
  • Cancellation and rebooking if the sea is rough

  • Printed or digital ticket, and who to call at the pier

Rough seas, rainy season and plan B

Sponsored

Disruption is most often flagged between December and February. Fast boats can be delayed or cancelled when seas are high. The public ferry may keep running when some fast boat services stop, though it also depends on sea conditions. Plan B is the ferry via Lombok, which adds hours, or a flight to Lombok, which adds cost. Ask your seller what happens to your ticket if the boat does not sail. Check the BMKG forecast and the Indonesia tourism site for travel updates. Keep flexibility in your plans during these months.

Good to know

Total time passes 10 hours on the Lombok route, so treat it as Plan B only if your schedule has room.

Getting around after you land

The islands have no cars or motorbikes. Trawangan has no taxis or ride-hailing waiting at the harbor. Most stays on Trawangan sit 10 to 30 minutes on foot from the harbor, and the island circuit is about 7 km. Bicycles rent for about Rp50k a day. A cidomo, the horse cart, runs about Rp100k to Rp150k per ride depending on distance and luggage. Trawangan charges a harbor fee of about Rp10k. Carry small cash, since cards are not always accepted at the harbor.

Common mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Booking a same-day flight home from Gili is the costliest error. Leave a generous buffer between your return boat and any Bali departure. Other slips are easy to avoid.

  • Booking without pickup details or a contact number
  • Assuming one island is the first stop on every boat
  • Arriving at the pier with only large notes
  • Choosing a fast boat despite known seasickness, when the ferry may suit better
  • Trying a day trip. Most of the day goes to travel, so stay a night or two
