Lovina Beaches: Black Sand, Dolphins & Where to Go
Lovina's black-sand beaches compared: swimming, snorkelling, dolphin boats, sunsets, costs and how to get there from south Bali.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: lovina beaches are a string of dark-sand villages along more than 8 km (about 5 miles) of north Bali coast, not one single beach. Expect calm water, volcanic sand and sunrise dolphin boats rather than white-sand sunbathing. This guide compares the stretches, then covers swimming, dolphins, costs and how long to stay.

Lovina Beaches at a Glance
Per Indonesia's official tourism site, Lovina covers over 8 km of coast. It links Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Anturan and Tukad Mungga. Kalibukbuk is the heart of the area, and the same source places Lovina about 9 km from Singaraja. Sand is grey to black and volcanic. Water is usually calm, but this is not a classic swimming or sunbathing coast. The real draws are sunrise dolphin boats, sunsets, snorkelling and a slow pace. Our fuller verdict sits in this worth-visiting breakdown.

- Suits: slow travellers, couples, backpackers and families who want quiet evenings.
- Skip if you want: white sand, surf, beach clubs or late-night parties.
- Mistakes to avoid: expecting a turquoise lagoon, arriving without cash, and booking a day trip that leaves no time on the sand.
Lovina's Beach Stretches Compared
Sources describe Lovina as a chain of villages, so treat the table as a starting map. Only the village names and a few venues are confirmed by the brief. Anything about crowds or facilities should be checked on the ground. Local maps may also show village names such as Temukus and Banyualit. None of our sources describe them, so confirm their character locally.

| Stretch | What sources say | Best for | Verify on the ground |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kalibukbuk (Centre) | Called the heart of Lovina; snorkel gear and local snorkel trips reported here | First-timers, beach walks, snorkelling | Boat touts and parking |
| Kaliasem | Listed as one of the four villages | Quieter stays | Beach width and facilities |
| Anturan | Listed as one of the four villages | Quieter stays | Beach width and facilities |
| Tukad Mungga | Listed as one of the four villages | Sunset strolls | Access points and cafes |
| West Lovina | Krisna Water Sports Centre reported here | Jet skis, parasailing | Opening hours and prices |
| East Lovina | Puri Bagus resort reported beachfront, 5-10 minutes by car from the Centre | Resort stays | Beach access for non-guests |
Is Lovina Good for Swimming and Snorkelling?
Reports disagree, so conditions matter. One source calls the water calm and shallow, better for wading than hard swimming. Another reports murky water, seaweed and some debris. Dry season, April to October, is said to bring calmer water. Bring reef shoes, because coral fragments and debris can sit near the shoreline. For snorkelling, artificial coral nurseries sit roughly 200 m offshore. A local project of over 250 people built them. Strong swimmers may reach them, but most people hire a boat driver who supplies gear. Kalibukbuk is the usual spot for beginner snorkelling. Experienced divers should look at Menjangan Island instead. Confirm the operator and park rules before booking.

Dolphin Watching: Sunrise Boats, Crowds and Ethics
Dolphin boats are the headline act. Trips run on traditional jukung boats, usually from around 6am. One blog reports similar sightings on 6am, 7:30am and 8am departures. Typical prices are IDR 100,000-200,000 per person, so check before you go. The main spot, close to shore, can have 100+ boats at dawn. A farther alternative took about 1.5 hours to find dolphins, yet had only 7-8 other boats. Sightings are never guaranteed. Book through your hotel or a trusted operator to avoid pushy touts. Bring a light jacket and dry clothes. Local authorities are reported to be considering ethics rules, so ask your operator about boat spacing. For official updates, see the Buleleng Regency government.
- Main spot: shortest ride, biggest crowd.
- Farther spot: longer wait, fewer boats.
- Pick one: choose the later or farther trip if crowding bothers you.
Sunset, Plankton Nights and Evening on the Beach

Sunset is the easiest beach plan. Walk the sand near Kalibukbuk and watch the sea turn orange without queuing for a photo spot. After dark, plankton boats leave around 7:30pm for about IDR 200,000 per person. One blogger found plankton in roughly 15 minutes. Others report waits over an hour, or none. Spice Beach Club hosts Thursday dance. Sources conflict on timing, 6pm or 7pm, so call ahead. Live music clusters on Jalan Binaria, including Poco Lounge Bar and Zigiz Bar. For dinner, see Lovina seafood restaurants. After-dark options are covered in Lovina's nightlife guide. Street food is covered in the night market guide.
Water Sports and Family Options
Calm water suits motorised fun. Krisna Water Sports in West Lovina offers jet skiing, parasailing and banana boats. A 15-minute jet ski session cost IDR 550,000 in one report. Its pool entry was IDR 85,000 at the foreigner rate. Krisna Funtasticland runs daily from 4pm to 10pm. Entry is IDR 75,000 for foreigners, rides cost roughly IDR 25,000 each, and an all-rides wristband was IDR 200,000. Treat these as approximate and recheck hours and tiers. Families often like Lovina for its low traffic and short distances.
Beyond the Sand: Hot Springs, Temple, Waterfalls and Singaraja

Side trips fill a second day. Brahma Vihara Arama charges about IDR 25,000 plus IDR 5,000 parking. Banjar Hot Springs is close by and also about IDR 25,000, with extra for parking and lockers. Sources disagree on whether it has two or three pools. Gitgit Waterfall is roughly a 30-minute drive, then a walk of about 15 minutes. Aling-Aling costs about IDR 20,000 without a guide, but sliding needs a guide. Singaraja sits about 20 minutes east. More ideas are in our Lovina activities guide. A soak pairs well with a massage, so see Lovina spa options.
Gitgit Waterfall is roughly a 30-minute drive away, and sharp mountain bends make a driver easier than a scooter.
Best Time to Visit Lovina Beaches
Dry season, April to October, is the safer bet for calm water and reliable dolphin mornings. July and August bring more visitors but not packed sand. Sources disagree on the rainy-season window. One says January to April, another November to March. Strong wind and heavy rain can cancel boats. Mornings are more likely to be clear. Check BMKG forecasts before you commit. Month-by-month detail is in our Lovina weather guide. Confirm any local festival dates directly, because none are verified here.
Getting There and Getting Around
Drive times vary by source and traffic. From Denpasar, the official tourism site gives about 2 hours via Bedugul. It gives about 4 hours via Gilimanuk. Blogs report these times by car:

- Bali airport: about 3 to 3.5 hours.
- Seminyak: about 3 hours.
- Canggu: about 2.5 hours.
- Ubud: about 2.5 to 2 hours 40 minutes.
- Uluwatu: about 4 hours.
How Long to Stay in Lovina
A private-driver day trip is long and leaves little beach time. One night is the best value for a dolphin dawn. Two nights let you add hot springs, the temple and waterfalls. Scooters reach inland sights, but mountain roads have sharp turns and are tough for beginners. A driver is easier. Pick a base using our Lovina stay guide. Cash helps, since reported ATMs include BNI and Bank BPD in the main area, plus a cluster at Krisna Waterpark parking.
Dolphin boats leave from around 6am, which is why a single night in Lovina covers both the evening and the dawn trip.
- Day trip: dolphins plus one add-on, minimal beach time.
- 1 night: sunset, plankton or dinner, dolphins next morning.
- 2 nights: add Banjar, Brahma Vihara Arama and a waterfall.
