Quick answer: which Medan mall should you pick?
Pick by situation, not by size. Sun Plaza suits brands and dining. Centre Point Mall suits a train layover. Plaza Medan Fair suits budget and local goods. Ringroad City Walks suits a younger, café-and-music crowd. Use the table below, then read the short entries. Malls work best as air-conditioned breaks inside a wider plan from our Medan things-to-do guide.

| Your situation | Best pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Upmarket brands and dining | Sun Plaza | Sogo anchor, plus Uniqlo, Zara and H&M tenants |
| Budget and local goods | Plaza Medan Fair | Described as an all-classes mall with Matahari |
| Families and kids | Centre Point Mall or Manhattan Times Square | Listings mention kids' play zones and supermarkets |
| Layover from the train | Centre Point Mall | Reported to be near Medan railway station |
| Cinema and rainy afternoon | Sun Plaza or Centre Point Mall | Both list cinemas and arcades |
| Young crowd and cafés | Ringroad City Walks | Semi-outdoor, live-music concept |
| Wholesale and old-city feel | Medan Mall or Thamrin Plaza | Older malls; check current status first |
Sun Plaza: the upmarket default

Sun Plaza sits at Jalan Haji Zainul Arifin No. 7 in Medan Polonia. Landmark REIT's property page describes it as the biggest upmarket shopping Centre in Medan. It opened in 2004. Sogo Department Store anchors it. Tenants include Uniqlo, Zara, H&M, The North Face, The Body Shop and Cinepolis. Playtopia Arcade gives kids a place to burn off energy. Parking is generous at 1,724 car lots and 2,000 motorcycle lots, according to the owner's figures. Opening hours are reported as 10:00 to 22:00 daily, so confirm them on the Sun Plaza official site before you go. It suits shoppers wanting international brands and sit-down dining. It suits budget hunters less, since cheaper local goods are easier to find elsewhere.
Other Medan malls worth knowing

Each mall below fills a different gap. Facts come from operator pages and listings, so treat hours and tenants as items to confirm.
- Centre Point Mall: reported to be near Medan railway station, which makes it a natural first stop after a train arrival. Listings mention LotteMart, an XXI cinema, a food court and kids' zones such as Timezone and Kidzilla.
- Plaza Medan Fair: an all-classes mall with Matahari and Cinema XXI, plus many gadget and electronics shops. The Lippo Malls page lists an ATM, car and motorcycle parking, EV parking, free Wi-Fi and disabled access.
- Lippo Plaza Medan: beside Siloam Hospital, with Cinepolis and Sushi Tei. Listed hours are 11:00 to 21:00, a shorter window than most.
- Manhattan Times Square: at Jalan Gatot Subroto No. 217 in Medan Sunggal. Family-oriented, with Brastagi Supermarket and a cinema.
- Ringroad City Walks: a semi-outdoor concept with cafés and live music. Check current events and times before a special trip. For late evenings, see our Medan nightlife guide.
- DeliPark at Podomoro City Deli: premium brands such as Sephora and Coach are listed. Check its own site for current operations.
- Thamrin Plaza, Medan Mall and Suzuya Marelan Plaza: older, wholesale-leaning or northern-suburb options. Thamrin Plaza is reported to be under renovation, so verify it is open before you cross town.

Hours, crowds and best time to go
Many listings put big-mall hours at 10:00 to 22:00. Lippo Plaza Medan is reported at 11:00 to 21:00. Hours can shift on weekends and public holidays, so check each mall's own page. Weekday mornings are usually calmer. Saturday and Sunday are reported as busiest at Sun Plaza and Centre Point Mall. Treat that as a tip, not a measured count. Allow a couple of hours for one mall. That is our estimate, not a sourced figure. Malls earn their place when heat builds or rain arrives. For season context, read our Best Time to Visit Medan: Month-by-Month Guide guide. Forecasts are published by Indonesia's weather agency BMKG.

Getting there and between malls
Kualanamu airport is reported at about 39 km from central Medan, so allow transfer time before any mall stop. Confirm transfer options on the Kualanamu Airport official site. Our Medan airport guide covers the options in more detail. Between malls, ride-hailing motorbikes and taxis are the simple choice. Traffic can slow cross-town hops, so do not plan more than two malls in one outing. Centre Point Mall works best as a first stop for train arrivals. Group malls by district on a map before you commit, rather than assuming they sit close together.
Costs and payments

No current price data was available for this guide. Listings say most large malls accept digital wallets and cash, so carry some of both and check each mall's own site.
Mall or something else? When to skip
Skip malls if you are in Medan for local flavor. A night market is the cheaper, more local evening option, covered in our Medan night market guide. For regional dishes, start with our Medan food guide. For a sit-down meal, see 6 Best Restaurants in Medan: Where to Eat by Craving. Skip the wholesale-style malls too, such as Medan Mall, unless bulk goods interest you. With a spare day, Day Trips From Medan: Orangutans & Realistic Options beat any mall. Use a mall only as a cool-down between outdoor stops.
Mistakes to avoid
Four slips cost visitors the most time.
Plan around Lippo Plaza Medan's 11:00 to 21:00 window, since it closes earlier than Sun Plaza's 22:00.
- Treating all malls as the same. Sun Plaza, Plaza Medan Fair and Medan Mall serve very different shoppers.
- Arriving at weekend peak. Go on a weekday morning if you can.
- Trusting unverified hours. Check the mall's own site on the day.
- Underestimating traffic. Cross-town hops can eat an hour of a short itinerary.
