Abdul Rachman Saleh Airport serves Malang. Some sources spell it Abdulrachman Saleh, and Indonesian listings call it Bandara Abdulrachman Saleh. Wikipedia puts the airport in Pakis, Kabupaten Malang, about 17 km east of central Malang. Civil flights moved to a separate terminal on 30 December 2011, built for a stated Rp 139 billion. Passengers had used a terminal inside the air base since 25 May 2005. Wikipedia describes the site as shared with a TNI AU air base. Treat that as background, not a traveller problem. The airfield was called Bugis until a renaming on 17 August 1952. In 2019 it handled 893,678 passengers, according to DGCA figures cited on Wikipedia. Wikipedia also lists the East Java provincial transport office as operator, which is unusual in Indonesia. Confirm that before relying on it.

Which airport do you actually fly into? MLG vs Surabaya (SUB)

Fly into MLG when your trip starts in Jakarta. Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air and Citilink are listed on that corridor, and you skip an overland leg. Surabaya Juanda (SUB) may give you more departure times or cheaper fares from other cities. You then pay for it with a road or rail transfer to Malang. Our sources give no verified road time from SUB, so check a current estimate before you book. Weigh the criteria below against your own itinerary.

  • Origin city: a Jakarta departure favours MLG, while other origins may only connect through SUB.
  • Schedule flexibility: MLG has few daily departures, so a missed flight costs more than at SUB.
  • Baggage: a direct flight avoids moving heavy bags across a second leg.
  • Arrival hour: late landings at either airport leave fewer transfer options, so confirm a pick-up first.
  • Onward plans: Batu and the city Centre suit MLG, while a Bromo-first trip may justify comparing both.

Getting from Malang Airport to the city and Batu

The gap is about 17 km, so expect a real transfer rather than a short hop. Central Malang (Klojen) and Batu are separate destinations, so decide where you sleep first. Our guide to Where to Stay in Malang: 4 Best Areas by Traveler Type (2026) helps you pick. Wikipedia describes one airport taxi operator, Taksi Garuda, run by a TNI AU cooperative. It lists sedans only, with zone-based fares instead of a meter. That description is partly dated, so confirm it at the arrivals hall. Angkot minibuses do not pass the terminal. Wikipedia says you must walk 1 to 2 km out of the airport area, roughly 15 minutes on foot. From there it names an angkot marked TA toward Terminal Arjosari, which is inside Malang city. Pulling a suitcase along that walk is a poor trade for most visitors. None of our sources describe a train or bus at the terminal. Check KAI and current ride-hailing rules for the latest options. Every price below needs a current check, because no verified fare is available.

Tip

Angkot access means a walk of 15 minutes, and with options thinning after dark, a night landing makes a pre-booked car the safer choice.

As of 5 November 2026, the clearest evidence is Jakarta service. Wikipedia lists Garuda Indonesia to Soekarno-Hatta (CGK), Batik Air to Halim Perdanakusuma (HLP) and CGK, and Citilink to HLP. A live Flightradar24 board showed Batik Air flights to HLP and CGK on 5 November. Use that site as a schedule tool, not as a booking authority. Wikipedia says Wings Air once flew Malang to Denpasar, so treat Bali service as unconfirmed. Civil flights began on 1 April 1994 with Merpati, which stopped on 16 June 1997. Routes have changed repeatedly since then. Wikipedia still classes Malang as a domestic airport, so do not plan an international arrival. Confirm every route on the airline's own website.

Arrival-day tips and mistakes to avoid

Start with the weather. At 526 m the air is cooler than on the coast, and clouds or rain can affect the day. Our Malang weather guide covers the seasons. Check the forecast on the BMKG weather agency site before you fly. Fix a transfer plan before departure, especially for evening flights. Late arrivals can still eat well, and the Malang Night Market Guide: Dates, Food & Tips is one option after you check in. Confirm the ride-hailing pick-up point with the driver instead of assuming it. Avoid these three mistakes.

  • Assuming the airport is in the city. It is 17 km out, so budget time and money for the transfer.
  • Booking a late flight with no transfer plan. Options thin out after dark, so pre-book a car.
  • Relying on stale route info. Check airline sites close to your travel date.
