Last updated November 2026: a Malang night market usually means the periodic Tong Tong Night Market festival or everyday evening food stalls. Tong Tong is held at Taman Tjerme, The Shalimar Boutique Hotel, and its listed 2025 edition ran 24–27 July, so it is not a nightly event. Evening stalls near Alun-Alun Tugu, Batu's night market area by Alun-Alun Batu, and Pasar malam pop-ups cover other nights, while bars and clubs sit in our Malang nightlife guide.

Which Malang Night Market Fits You

Start by deciding what you want from the evening. Tong Tong gives you a dated festival with performances and a heritage setting. Everyday stalls give you flexibility on any night you are in town. Pasar malam pop-ups move around, so ask your hotel which ones are running this week. This page is part of our wider Malang travel guide.

  • First-timers: pick Tong Tong if dates match, otherwise Alun-Alun Tugu.
  • Food-focused: combine stalls with the dishes in our Malang food guide.
  • Culture and heritage: Tong Tong, for the music and dance programming.
  • Families and budget: everyday stalls, where you control how much you spend.
  • One evening only: choose the option that is actually running on your dates.

Tong Tong Night Market: What It Is

Tong Tong is a food and cultural festival hosted by The Shalimar Boutique Hotel Malang since 2016. According to the Indonesia Travel event listing, it is inspired by the Tong Tong Fair in the Netherlands, which celebrates Indo-European culture and dates to 1959. Taman Tjerme, the venue, is described as a heritage building. Listed programming includes outdoor movies, Malang mask dance, cokekan, keroncong, and wayang suket. Local small businesses and art communities take part as well. The only edition with published dates in our research is 2025. Do not assume a 2026 schedule or a fixed July slot. Check the hotel's official website or social accounts for current announcements before you plan around it.

What to Eat and Drink at Evening Markets

The Tong Tong listing promises iconic and traditional Malang dishes but names none. Stall lineups change, so treat any list as a starting point. Bakso, the meatball soup Malang is widely known for, is a reasonable first order if a stall has it. Ask stallholders what they are known for rather than hunting a famous name. Our Malang food guide covers the dishes in more depth. If you want a table and a menu instead, see our pick of the 7 Best Restaurants in Malang: Heritage Rooms, Bakso and Cafes.

Costs, Tickets, and Opening Hours

Entry to the 2025 Tong Tong edition was listed as free. Confirm that again for any later edition, since ticket policy can change. Food is your main spend. Transport and parking add to it. Everyday stalls near Alun-Alun Tugu and Alun-Alun Batu have no entry fee to plan around, so your budget is simply what you order. We do not have a sourced rupiah range for a typical evening, so we do not quote one. Hours for stalls and pop-ups are not published in our sources. Check the organizer's announcement for festival hours, and ask your accommodation about stall hours on your night.

Good to know

Listed as free for the 2025 edition, which ran 24–27 July, so budget mostly for food and transport.

Getting There and Back After Dark

Late-night transport is where evening plans usually go wrong. Ride-hailing apps are the simplest way to get across town, but availability can thin out late. Settle your return plan before you arrive. Ask your hotel whether a driver can be booked for the way back. If you are going to Batu's night market area, plan the return trip even more carefully. Our sources give no journey time or fare, so check both in your app before you leave. Flying in? Read our Malang airport guide before scheduling an evening out on arrival day.

How to Plan Your Evening

Use a simple time-block structure rather than a rigid itinerary. Check the forecast first, using the BMKG weather agency for rain warnings. Our Malang weather guide explains seasonal patterns.

  • Late afternoon: visit a daytime sight, then rest.
  • Early evening: arrive at the market before crowds build.
  • Mid-evening: eat first, then watch any performances.
  • Last hour: confirm your ride home before you finish.
  • Next night: swap to bars or live music from the nightlife guide.

Where to Stay for Evening Markets

Choose a base by how you plan to get home. Staying near Alun-Alun Tugu lets you reach those stalls with a short ride. Staying at or near The Shalimar Boutique Hotel suits Tong Tong week, if rooms are available. Travelers heading to Batu should check what time the last practical ride back leaves. Compare areas in our Malang accommodation guide. Undecided about the city as a whole? Read whether Malang is worth visiting.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from assumptions. Avoid these.

  • Assuming Tong Tong runs every night.
  • Skipping the date check with the organizer.
  • Arriving late, after the best dishes sell out.
  • Leaving without a ride home arranged.
  • Carrying only cards; bring cash for small stalls.
  • Expecting bars and clubs; those are in the nightlife guide.
