Last updated November 2026. A Surabaya night market is not one fixed place with a posted schedule. The term covers event bazaars, mall evening markets and street-food stretches after dark, so pick by what you want: food, souvenirs or atmosphere. Our guide explains the local vocabulary and what to confirm before you head out, and it links to the wider 9 Best Things To Do in Surabaya: Sights & Planning plan.

Surabaya night market: the short answer

Locals say Pasar malam for a night market. Related terms include Pasar senggol, Pasar kaget, Pasar tumpah and bazar. Public-history researcher Anitha Silvia lists these names in a April 2025 History Workshop article on Surabaya's street markets. A bazar or Pasar malam is often temporary or event-based. Treat any evening market as something to confirm, not something to assume.

Surabaya's street markets also face repeated municipal enforcement. Silvia describes 2024 as a peak in the eviction of street vendors. Markets can therefore move, shrink or close without notice. No source we reviewed confirms a famous, fixed-schedule night market, so this page gives no invented days, hours or addresses.

Use the Bahasa terms as search tools. Type Pasar malam, Pasar senggol or bazar into a map app. Ask hotel staff the same words, and ask which ones are running this week.

Three broad types cover most evenings. This table is general guidance, not facts about named venues. Confirm each type locally before planning around it.

Surabaya Carnival Night Market: what is confirmed

One listing on VoyaBear describes a Surabaya Carnival Night Market as a street-food and games market. We could not corroborate its address, days or entry cost through an official source. Do not plan a night around it until a map listing or the Surabaya city government confirms those details.

Pre-dawn markets are not evening markets

Some Surabaya street markets run before sunrise. History Workshop describes Pasar tumpah Tembok on Tembok Dukuh Street starting around 3am and peaking about 10 minutes before 6am, as observed in 2020 and 2021. That is a wet market for local shopping, not an evening food crawl.

Good to know

Stalls starting around 3am belong to a morning visit, so they cannot stand in for an evening market plan.

By July 2024 the author reported a municipal sweep at 5am and a market confined to the roadside. Treat it as local context, and do not plan a tourist night around it. It suits early risers who want to see daily life, if it is still operating.

Timing and planning your evening

Evenings are cooler than the afternoon, which makes street stalls more comfortable. Rain can still shut open-air stalls, so keep a covered fallback in mind. Our Best Time to Visit Surabaya: Weather & Season Guide guide covers the wet and dry seasons.

Tip

Allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours, and count the ride back inside that window, since late returns are simpler by app.

As a planning suggestion, not a sourced fact, budget 1.5 to 2.5 hours for a market visit. That allows time to walk the stalls, eat once and arrange a ride back. One listing hints at May to October as the best months. That claim is unverified, so check current dates before relying on it.

Costs and what to bring

No sourced visitor prices exist for Surabaya night markets, so this page quotes none. The IDR 5,000 to IDR 20,000 figure in History Workshop is a daily trader fee at a pre-dawn market. It is not what visitors pay.

In general, street stalls cost less than a sit-down meal. Compare against Surabaya Malls: Which to Visit & How to Choose and our 6 Best Restaurants in Surabaya: Where to Eat by Situation list to judge value. For savings ideas, see Free Things to Do in Surabaya: Budget Guide (2026).

  • Carry cash in small notes, since many stalls may not take cards.
  • Keep large notes at the hotel.
  • Ask the price before ordering if nothing is posted.
  • Bargain politely, and only for non-food goods.
  • Bring a light rain layer and insect repellent.

Getting there and getting back

Evening markets and food strips are spread across the city. Drop a pin on a map app before leaving, and confirm the stall area is still active. Ride-hailing apps or a licensed taxi usually make late returns simpler than public transport. Check the fare method before you board.

Your base matters. Our Where to Stay in Surabaya: 5 Best Areas by Trip Type guide helps you choose an area. If you land in the evening, see Surabaya Airport (Juanda SUB): Terminals & City Transfer for the arrival routine, and check Juanda International Airport for current information.

Verify before you go

Run through these five checks on the day you plan to go.

  • Confirm the day the market is running.
  • Confirm the opening time.
  • Save the location pin on your map.
  • Ask whether stalls take cash only or digital payment.
  • Plan your return ride before you arrive.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Skipping the day-of check is the common error, because markets can close without notice. Mixing up pre-dawn wet markets with tourist night markets is another. Carrying large notes slows every purchase.

Choose busy stalls with steady turnover for food. Cooked-to-order dishes are a safer bet than items sitting out. Heat and humidity add up, so pace yourself and drink water.

Alternatives if nothing is running tonight
