Temples in Kuta: Nearby Bali Temples & How to Visit
Which temples are in Kuta, and which are worth the trip? Travel times, entry costs, etiquette, and sunset trade-offs for staying in Kuta.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: temples in Kuta are few, because this is a beach town with small neighborhood shrines. Vihara Dharmayana, a Chinese Buddhist temple, is the one major temple listed inside Kuta itself. Everything else is a day trip, so we rank by drive time from Kuta and leave the beach side to our Kuta activity guide.

Temple etiquette in 60 seconds
Kuta's shrines are small and sit beside shops and homes. Canang Sari offerings, the palm-leaf trays of flowers and sweets, appear on pavements every day. Step around them, never on them. At any temple, cover your shoulders and knees. Sarongs and sashes are usually provided or rentable at the entrance, although sources differ on which temples do which. Keep your voice low, follow temple officials, and never interrupt a ritual. Some guides mention a menstruation restriction at certain temples. It is not checked at the gate and comes from older custom, so ask staff if you are unsure. For rules on a specific temple, check the Wonderful Indonesia tourism site.

The temple inside Kuta: Vihara Dharmayana
Vihara Dharmayana is our only in-Kuta pick, and it is not a Balinese Hindu temple. It is a Chinese Buddhist temple with red walls and murals, set among busy streets. That contrast is the reason to go. A user-generated Trip.com listing showed 09:00–20:00 hours on 5 November 2026. Treat that as unverified, and confirm the address, hours, donation, and dress expectations locally. Sarong rules may differ from Hindu temples, so ask at the gate. We'd pencil in 30 to 60 minutes as a suggestion, not a fact. It fits between a surf session and lunch. If cost matters, see our Free Things to Do in Kuta, Bali: Sunsets and Culture, but check any donation first.

Uluwatu Temple: cliff, Kecak, and monkeys
Uluwatu is the closest major temple, at about 45 minutes to an hour from Kuta by car or scooter. Its official site describes a cliff of about 70 m above the Indian Ocean. One blog gives about 97 m, so we use the official figure. Hours also conflict. The official site says 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM daily, while Indonesia.travel says 09.00 to 19.00. We follow the official site and suggest you confirm before leaving. Gates for the Kecak dance open at 4:00 PM. Wildlife matters here. The monkeys are protected, so secure sunglasses, hats, and phones. If one grabs something, do not chase it. Report it to staff. After dark, our Kuta restaurant picks work for a late dinner.
- Foreign adult entry: Rp 50,000. Foreign child: Rp 30,000.
- Kecak ticket: Rp 150,000 adult, Rp 75,000 child.
- Dance starts 6:00 PM. Gates open 4:00 PM.
- Sarong and sash are provided at the entrance.

Tanah Lot: sea temple at sunset
Tanah Lot sits in Tabanan, about 45 minutes from Denpasar or Kuta by taxi, rental car, online motorcycle taxi, or hotel tour. Foreign adults pay Rp 100,000 and foreign children Rp 60,000. Late afternoon suits sunset. Arrive earlier for a quieter temple area. Tide changes access. At high tide, seawater surrounds the rock, and worshippers use a temple on the beach instead. Low tide lets you walk across, so check tide times before you commit. Tanah Lot rewards photographers more than Uluwatu does, though it has no dance show.
Uluwatu or Tanah Lot: which sunset?
Both peak at sunset, so you realistically pick one per evening. Our pick for most first-timers is Uluwatu, because the cliff and the Kecak give the evening a shape. Adults pay Rp 200,000 for entry plus the dance, against Rp 100,000 at Tanah Lot. Choose Tanah Lot for photography, a shorter 45-minute drive, or small children and Monkey worries. Keep rain in mind. Our Kuta weather guide covers the wet season, and BMKG forecasts help on the day. Surf mornings pair well with either sunset. See our Kuta surf guide for the morning half.
Half-day temples: Taman Ayun, Ulun Danu Beratan, Sangeh

Taman Ayun in Mengwi is roughly an hour from Kuta, per one guide. Foreign adults pay Rp 30,000, and mid-morning gives softer light. It is a royal temple with wide gardens and tiered meru towers. Ulun Danu Beratan in Bedugul takes 1.5 to 2 hours. Foreign adults pay Rp 75,000, and early morning brings mist and fewer crowds. Bukit Sari in Sangeh is a Monkey forest temple. We found no sourced travel time or price from Kuta, so verify both. Keep jewelry and food out of sight there. Our Day Trips from Kuta, Bali: Best Options & How to Choose page helps you pair these with other stops.
Full-day temples: Besakih, Lempuyang, Rambut Siwi, and others
Treat these as worth it only if temples are your main reason for the day. Rambut Siwi in Jembrana is about two hours from Kuta, with entry listed at IDR 5,000. Besakih and Lempuyang in East Bali take 2 to 3 hours from central Bali, and Indonesia.travel recommends a driver. Besakih lists around Rp 150,000 for foreigners. Lempuyang lists Rp 55,000 to 100,000, plus a mandatory shuttle at Rp 45,000 to 50,000. One blog mentions 1,700+ steps, so verify that. Meduwe Karang in North Bali takes 1.5 to 2 hours from the city center, a vague baseline. Pasar Agung is about 1.5 hours from Kuta by car, per one source. Do not treat Besakih or Lempuyang as casual add-ons.
Ubud-side temples in one stop

If you are building an Ubud day, combine three temples. Tirta Empul is known for melukat, a purification ritual in holy spring water, and lists Rp 75,000 for adults. Goa Gajah sits about 15 minutes from central Ubud, with Rp 50,000 listed for foreign adults. Gunung Kawi has more than 300 steps down to its shrines. Morning is best at the first two. Plan the rest of the day with our Kuta day trip ideas.
How to get there: taxi, driver, scooter, or tour
A taxi or private driver is the easiest option for Uluwatu and Tanah Lot, both within about an hour. Scooters are listed as an option for Uluwatu, but weigh traffic and your experience first. Tours bundle the Kecak show or Bedugul stops. We found no sourced fares, so compare quotes locally. For Besakih and Lempuyang, Indonesia.travel recommends a driver. Staying near your pickup point saves time, so see 4 Best Areas to Stay in Kuta, Bali (2026 Guide). Legian-based readers can start from 8 Best Things to Do in Legian, Bali: Local Picks.
Lempuyang's mandatory shuttle costs Rp 45,000 to 50,000 on top of entry, so include it when comparing driver quotes.
Mistakes to avoid
Most problems come from timing and manners. Reach Uluwatu by the 4:00 PM gate opening if you want a Kecak seat. Do not chase monkeys. Do not step on canang Sari. Check for major ceremonies before entering, and follow staff directions if one is under way.
Official hours close at 7:00 PM, yet the Kecak dance starts at 6:00 PM, so one evening plan can leave little slack.
- Arriving at Uluwatu without time for the 4:00 PM gates.
- Chasing a Monkey that took your sunglasses.
- Stepping on offerings on pavements.
- Entering during a major ceremony.
- Treating Besakih or Lempuyang as a casual add-on.
