Last updated November 2026. Bali horse riding comes in three forms: black-sand beach rides, rice-field treks and lessons at a stable arena. Choose by area first, then by time of day and your riding level. For most visitors, a sunset ride from the southwest coast is the easiest to book, but it takes far longer than the ride itself.

Best Areas And Ride Types For Bali Horse Riding

Search results point to five riding areas. Operator names below come from search snippets only, so check each venue's own site for hours, prices and rules before booking. One operator's sunset product runs through rice fields and villages to Pig Stone Beach, a black-sand shore. That route is the only one with details we could read.

Sunset, Sunrise Or Daytime: Choosing The Time Of Day

Sunset is the most-advertised slot. The sampled operator sends its group out at 17:00 so the beach section lands near dusk. It also lists a sunrise version, priced higher. Daytime rides can be hot, so ask whether horses work through midday. On beach rides, ask the stable how tides change the route. Rainy season runs roughly November to March, so confirm the cancellation and rebooking terms for wet days. Check the national weather agency, BMKG, for current forecasts. Our guide to a sunset cruise covers the main alternative for dusk.

How Much Time To Plan For A Bali Horse Ride

A one-hour ride is not a one-hour activity. The sampled operator lists the ride at 1 to 1.5 hours, yet the full block with transfers is about 4 to 5 hours. Its sample schedule below is typical, and it varies by pickup area and traffic. Plan on losing most of an afternoon and evening.

Costs, What's Included And Hidden Extras

One operator lists its sunset ride from Rp 850,000 per person, with a minimum of 2 people on a shared tour. Treat that as a single listing, not the Bali price. Its sunrise ride is listed at Rp 950,000 and its Saba Beach ride at Rp 800,000. Confirm all three on the operator's page. Pickup area changes the real total. Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Canggu and Tanah Lot are free-transfer zones for that operator. Jimbaran Bay, Nusa Dua and central Ubud add IDR 500,000 per car for up to 6 people. Ungasan, Uluwatu and Payangan add IDR 600,000 per car. Card payments carry a 3% fee. Photo and video packages and tips are extra. For general visitor guidance, see Indonesia's official tourism site.

Good to know

A central Ubud pickup adds IDR 500,000 per car for up to 6 people, while Canggu is a free-transfer zone for that operator.

Who Can Ride And Who Should Skip

The sampled operator sets a maximum rider weight of 85 kg, about 187 lb. It recommends ages 5 to 70 and says the ride is not suitable for pregnant travelers. Riders should be in good physical condition and should tell staff about medical conditions. Other stables set their own limits, so ask before paying. Skip a ride if you exceed the limit, are pregnant, have back problems or need a fixed schedule. Beginners are normally matched with a horse by experience, and experienced riders should ask about the pace. Stable-based lessons in Badung suit anyone who wants instruction rather than a scenic walk.

Tip

Confirm the 85 kg limit before paying, because other stables set their own caps rather than following one standard.

What To Wear And Bring

Sponsored

Wear long pants, a comfortable shirt and closed-toe shoes or sneakers. Add sunscreen, sunglasses and a light jacket for the evening return. Carry a phone or camera on a secure strap, plus cash for tips and personal expenses. Bring any medication and avoid loose accessories that could fall off on the trail.

How To Book, Pay And Cancel

Sponsored

Read the cancellation terms before you pay. The sampled operator refunds in full at 3 days or more. A 50% fee applies between 48 and 24 hours before the ride. Under 24 hours, and no-shows, pay the full amount. Groups over 7 need a 50% deposit. Its page also advertises "Free Cancellation (24h Notice)", which contradicts that policy text. Get the exact terms in writing on WhatsApp or the e-voucher. Treat "limited seats" banners as pressure, not proof of scarcity. If you want a custom pickup or schedule, a private driver-led day may fit better than a shared tour.

How To Choose A Safe, Well-Run Stable

Operators say "professional" without evidence, so judge by what you can see. Ask these questions before you commit.

  • Do horses look fit, with clean tack and no sores?
  • Do they rest, or work through the hottest hours?
  • How many handlers walk with each group?
  • Are helmets provided and fitted before mounting?
  • Is insurance coverage stated in writing?
  • Does the stable ask your weight and experience?

Mistakes To Avoid

Sponsored

Do not book a short itinerary day around a 4 to 5 hour block. Do not assume your hotel is in a free-transfer zone. Do not rely on a banner instead of the written cancellation policy. Do not ride in sandals. Pair the ride with one lighter stop only. A morning visit to a coffee plantation works before an afternoon pickup. If you want something more active, try ATV rides on a separate day. Ubud-based readers can browse Ubud day trips, and Bukit-side readers can look at Uluwatu outings. For the wider island, see our Bali tour options. The Bali Tourism Board is a starting point for general visitor information.
