Last updated November 2026. The best day trips from Denpasar are Ubud for culture, Kintamani for volcano views, Nusa Penida and Lembongan for islands, Bedugul and Jatiluwih for cooler highlands, and Trans Studio for families. Denpasar is Bali's working capital, not a beach resort, so this guide covers which trips suit a city-centre start and which work better from another base. Use our Denpasar base-city guide for what to do between trips.

Most Bali day-trip guides are written from Seminyak or Nusa Dua. Their drive times do not transfer to Denpasar, so this page gives no hard minutes. Treat every journey as approximate, traffic-dependent, and worth checking on a live map before you leave. Sanur Harbour is the Denpasar-adjacent advantage, because Penida and Lembongan boats leave from there. Mountain trips such as Kintamani and Bedugul are long days, and Batur sunrise is better as an overnight plan.

How to choose: time, budget and travel style

Start with energy, not the attraction list. Ubud and Sanur suit a relaxed day with no alarm clock. Kintamani for sunrise means leaving around 1:00 to 1:30am, according to competitor guides written for south-coast hotels, and that makes it a poor easy day trip. Penida and Lembongan need a morning boat and an afternoon return. Budget readers can start with our guide to Free Things To Do in Denpasar: What's Actually Free (and What Isn't) before paying for transport and tickets. Cost drivers differ by trip. Ubud costs mostly driver time, while Penida adds ferry tickets, island transport and entry fees.

Getting around from Denpasar

Sponsored

Your options are a private driver, Grab or Gojek, a scooter, an organized tour, or a boat from Sanur Harbour. A private driver suits multi-stop days in Ubud, Jatiluwih and Kintamani. Ride-hailing works well for one destination, such as Trans Studio. Competitors report that some Bukit beaches and Sanur Harbour restrict online taxi pickups, so arrange your return ahead of time and verify before relying on an app. Scooters suit experienced riders on short routes only. Competitors advise against them on Penida's rough roads. All-inclusive tours cost more but remove the logistics. Competitors cite a 30-minute ferry from Sanur, with a 7:30 to 8am departure out and a 5pm return. Check current operator timetables, because sea conditions can cancel sailings.

Ubud: culture, markets and rice terraces

Ubud is the strongest culture day trip. Choose two or three stops, not six. Competitor itineraries list Pura Tirta Empul, Tegallalang rice terraces, the Monkey Forest and the Campuhan Ridge Walk, and cramming all four wastes the day on the road. The brief points to Puri Saren and Museum Puri Lukisan as the town-centre pair, and the Indonesian heritage portal is a place to check museum details. A sensible sequence is Tirta Empul in the morning, Tegallalang next, then Ubud town for lunch and the palace. Compare Ubud's art market with our guide to Denpasar's markets if you want a local contrast. Staying in Ubud overnight is better if you want evening dance performances.

Kintamani and Mount Batur

Kintamani offers a crater-edge setting, hot springs and cafes. Competitors say the sunrise hike takes about 2 hours and needs a local guide, which your driver can arrange. Leaving around 1:00 to 1:30am makes this a tiring day from Denpasar. A 4WD jeep tour is the softer sunrise option. If you skip sunrise, a daytime visit works as a nature day with hot springs and cafe stops. Competitors list Toya Bungkah or Cinze hot springs, Pura Segara Ulun Danu Batur and the Batur Geopark Museum as stops to verify. Mount Batur sunrise is best treated as an overnight trip nearby.

Good to know

Ubud is the no-early-start option in the trip table, while Kintamani sunrise means leaving around 1:00 to 1:30am.

Nusa Penida (east vs west)

Penida is bigger than most visitors expect. One competitor says it is nearly twice the size of the Bukit Peninsula, which is worth verifying. With one day, pick east or west, not both. East Penida covers Goa Giri Putri, Diamond Beach and Atuh Beach. West Penida covers Kelingking, Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong. Diamond Beach has a carved staircase, so check your fitness. A competitor cites a Thousand Island viewpoint fee of Rp10,000, but confirm current fees locally. Book a return ferry before you go, and keep a buffer for the last boat. Sanur Harbour is your departure point. Penida is better as an overnight if you want snorkeling at Manta Point as well.

Nusa Lembongan and Ceningan

Lembongan is the easier island day. It is compact, and ferries from Sanur drop passengers at Jungutbatu Beach, where cafes sit within walking distance. Competitors recommend a scooter or buggy on the island, and say drivers are less common because the roads are narrow. Standard stops include the mangroves, Dream Beach, Devil's Tear and the Yellow Bridge to Nusa Ceningan. Choose Lembongan over Penida if you want low stress, shorter transfers and a flexible afternoon. Pick Penida if dramatic cliffs matter more than comfort. Sea conditions affect both, so check BMKG forecasts before booking.

Uluwatu and the Bukit Peninsula

Sponsored

Uluwatu is a beach, temple and culture day. Competitors name Melasti Beach for gentle swimming, Nunggalan Beach for a quieter shipwreck setting, and Dreamland for sunset. Nunggalan involves a downhill hike that one competitor timed at about 20 minutes, so uphill return matters for fitness. The Kecak dance at Uluwatu Temple runs around sunset, and GWK Culture Park is a second option. Transport is the catch. Some beaches reportedly block online taxi pickups, so arrange a driver for the return. This trip is better from a south-coast resort base than from Denpasar.

Bedugul and Jatiluwih

Bedugul and Jatiluwih pair well because they sit on the same highland route. Expect cooler air and terraced farmland. Competitors list Pura Ulun Danu Beratan, Handara Gate, Bali Botanic Garden, Leke-Leke Waterfall, Sangeh and Beji Griya as add-ons to verify. Jatiluwih has walking trails, and one competitor describes a 45-minute short route and a longest trek of 3 to 4 hours. Hire a private driver, since public options are limited. Pick Jatiluwih if rice terraces are the goal and Bedugul if lakes and gardens matter more. Do not combine either with Ubud, because the route backtracks.

Family and rainy-day options

Sponsored

Trans Studio Bali is an indoor theme park on the upper floors of a mall. Competitors say the park closes at 6pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends, and report foreigner tickets starting from Rp600,000. Online prices differ from gate prices, so verify on the official site. Competitors estimate 6 to 7 hours to do most rides. Waterbom in Kuta is another family option, with a cited 6pm closing time that you should confirm. It suits dry weather better than Trans Studio does. Check Denpasar's weather in the rainy season and lean toward indoor plans on heavy-rain days.

Tip

Trans Studio closes at 6pm on weekdays and 7pm on weekends, while most rides take 6 to 7 hours, so arrive early.

Easy half-days: Sanur and Nusa Dua

Sanur and Nusa Dua are fallback half-days, not headline trips. Sanur works as a promenade morning before an island ferry, or as a recovery day after a long mountain trip. Nusa Dua has resort beaches, gardens on Dharma Island and Peninsula Island, and Museum Pacifika, according to competitor guides. Neither adds much if you have only one day to spare. Choose them when weather rules out the mountains or the sea.

Sample one-day plans by traveler type

Pick one plan and resist adding a second.

  • First-timer: Ubud with Tirta Empul, Tegallalang and the town Centre.
  • Family: Trans Studio, with Waterbom as the dry-day alternative.
  • Hiker: Mount Batur sunrise with a guide, then hot springs, ideally with an overnight stay.
  • Beach lover: Uluwatu, with a booked driver for the return.
  • Island seeker: Lembongan for an easy day, east or west Penida for a harder one.
  • Highland: Bedugul and Jatiluwih together.
  • Budget: pick Ubud town only and compare costs with free options in Denpasar.

Mistakes to avoid and practical tips

Sponsored

Overpacking is the most common error. Two or three stops beat six. Ignoring traffic comes next, so check live maps and build in slack. Arriving after closing times ruins Trans Studio and temple plans, so confirm hours. Book a ferry only with a return plan, since the 5pm return cited by competitors leaves little margin. Underestimating Penida's size is a classic problem. Back in the city, plan a late meal from our Denpasar restaurant picks. Use evening things to do in Denpasar for a low-effort night.
