Last updated November 2026. Free things to do in Canggu Centre on beaches, sunset, village lanes and street-level culture, and none of them charge an entry ticket. Free rarely means zero spend, because parking, transport and a cold drink add up. Planning figures below are our editorial allowances in Indonesian rupiah (Rp), not published rates.

The Best Free Things to Do in Canggu: Beaches and Sunset

Start with the coast, which is the free core of any Canggu trip plan. Batu Bolong Beach and Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan) are the sunset names that come up most. Berawa Beach and Pantai Canggu round out the set. Walking the black-sand shoreline between Berawa and Pererenan costs nothing, and surfers give you a free show along the way. Our beach-by-beach guide compares sand, crowds and facilities. Sunset spots fill up, so do not expect quiet at Batu Bolong or Echo Beach. Budget about Rp 5,000 for scooter parking near the sand, as a planning allowance.

Good to know

Rp 5,000 for scooter parking here is the same allowance the sample day uses at sunset.

  • Batu Bolong Beach: easy surf-watching and a lively sunset crowd.
  • Echo Beach (Pantai Batu Mejan): a sunset favourite with a surf break offshore.
  • Berawa Beach: a good starting point for the shoreline walk.
  • Pantai Canggu: a base for the walk toward Pererenan.

Free Walks, Surf-Watching and Street Life

Rice-field and village lanes give you shade-free but cost-free scenery on foot. Our guide to quiet lanes and rice-field walks covers routes worth checking. Surf-watching from the sand is free, but swimming is a different matter. Rip currents and changing swell make some stretches risky, so read the notes on surf conditions and check forecasts from Indonesia's BMKG before entering the water. Local temples are best viewed from outside. Read up on temples near Canggu first. If a ceremony passes, step aside, keep your voice low and never stand on offerings placed on the ground. Expect a small donation of around Rp 20,000 at some sites, and wear a sarong and covered shoulders where asked. Official visitor guidance is on the Bali provincial tourism site. Browsing local markets costs nothing as long as you do not need to buy.

Use this table to sort picks by honesty. Extra-cost figures are our planning allowances, so check locally before you rely on them. Families with small children and non-swimmers should skip open-water swimming at surf beaches.

What Free Really Costs in Canggu

Transport is the real price of a free list. Walking works within one beach cluster. Beyond that, compare ride-hailing, scooter rental and the tips in our ride-hailing and walking options page. In our editorial assessment, plan about Rp 50,000 for a return ride-hail hop, Rp 25,000 for one drink and Rp 5,000 for parking. These are allowances, not official fares. Add a Rp 20,000 temple donation if you visit one. A full free day then needs roughly Rp 100,000 to Rp 150,000 in small spending.

Tip

Skip the Rp 25,000 drink allowance by claiming sand at sunset rather than taking a venue table.

Where to Save Money and What Is Worth Paying For

Go self-guided instead of booking tours, and sit on the sand at sunset instead of taking a beach-club table. Pack a refillable bottle to skip the Rp 8,000 water stops. Eating at a local warung also keeps the day cheap. If one paid upgrade is worth it, make it a surf lesson. A massage or a day trip are the next best returns. Keep those for after your free days. Nothing here needs booking. Temples can close for ceremonies, so ask locally on the day. Tide and swell change fast, so check conditions before walking the shoreline. Wet and dry season shifts crowds and comfort, so read wet and dry season notes and keep a market or café as a rainy-day backup.
