Jakarta Cooking Classes: Types, Costs & How to Book

The quick version

Choosing a Jakarta cooking class? Compare trial studios, pastry schools and short courses, with booking, cost and traffic tips.

Last updated November 2026: a Jakarta cooking class for visitors mostly means a baking or Japanese-style trial studio, not a lesson in rendang. In the sources we reviewed, we found no verified Indonesian-cuisine class operator, and we say so plainly below. Whichever class you pick, reserve ahead, because the main trial studio takes no walk-ins.

Quick answer: what a Jakarta cooking class really is

Listings for a Jakarta cooking class fall into three camps. Beginner trial studios run sessions of up to 2 hours. Pastry and culinary schools run longer programmes, including 9-month full-time diplomas at APCA Indonesia. Classes teaching Indonesian dishes to visitors are the hardest to verify. In our editorial assessment, a short-stay traveler should book a trial studio and treat everything else as a separate project. Here is how we'd sort the options.

  • Best for beginners: an ABC Cooking Studio trial lesson, 2 hours at most.
  • Best for a career change: a pastry or culinary school such as APCA Indonesia.
  • Best for Indonesian flavors: eat your way through them on a Jakarta Food Tour: Guided vs DIY Street Food Guide.

Jakarta cooking class types at a glance

Our comparison uses only figures the sources state. Trial lessons cap at 4 students per instructor. A 2018 Tatler Asia list says Arkamaya limited classes to 18 people, so confirm that school still operates before you plan around it. Where a cell says "check", no verified figure was available.

Beginner-friendly trial classes at ABC Cooking Studio

ABC Cooking Studio is the clearest option for a first-timer. Its trial page says no experience is required. Ingredients, equipment and a printed recipe are provided. Bring your own apron and takeaway bag. Start times run from 10:15am to 8:00pm, across eight slots. Regular menus listed on the page include gâteau au chocolat, a ham and cheese roll, and a cheese hamburg steak. Seasonal menus rotate, and the referral menus include okonomiyaki. Our pick is a baking menu, since cake and bread come with packaging you can carry to a hotel. Trial sessions end with a briefing about membership, so expect a sales pitch and decline politely if you are only visiting. Four studios are listed:

Pastry and professional schools: when to skip them

Professional schools suit people who want a credential, not an afternoon. APCA Indonesia advertises 9-month full-time diplomas in pastry arts and culinary arts, plus short courses. Its masterclasses are aimed at professionals. Time-bound events on its site, such as intake dates and gelato classes, change often, so check its current listings. Tatler Asia's 2018 list also names Maison Bleu in Kelapa Gading, Culinaria Modena in Kuningan, Creative Culinaire in Muara Karang and Indonesia Patisserie School in PIK. Treat that list as a lead, not a booking guide. Verify each school still runs short classes before you commit. For a one-week trip, we'd skip all of them.

Looking for Indonesian cuisine? An honest gap

Many travelers search for sambal, rendang, nasi goreng, satay and gado-gado lessons. The sources we reviewed cover baking studios and professional schools, and they list none of these dishes. We cannot name a verified operator, so we won't invent one. Check Google Maps and recent operator reviews for a home-style class. Official listings are another starting point, such as Wonderful Indonesia. Jakarta's own portal, Jakarta Tourism, is a second place to look. To taste those dishes without a class, start with our Jakarta food tour guide. Our Jakarta food guide explains what each dish is. For a sit-down meal afterward, see 10 Best Restaurants in Jakarta: Where to Eat by Area.

Costs and what's included

Sponsored

As listed on ABC's trial page, a first-timer trial costs Rp455,000 per person, for up to 4 people. A referral price of Rp285,000 per person applies when a member refers you. Both figures may be outdated, so confirm them with the studio before booking. Ingredients, tools and a printed recipe are included. Cake and bread lessons come with packaging to take home. Cooking-lesson dishes, however, are dine-in only. A traveler without a kitchen can carry a cake but not a cooked meal. Call-in bookings can be paid by cash or credit card at the studio before the lesson. We could not verify prices for pastry schools or Indonesian classes, so ask each operator directly.

Good to know

Rp285,000 per person is the referral price, but the briefing that ends every trial is a membership pitch, so decline it politely if you are only visiting.

How to plan your time and get there

Budget well beyond the 2 hours of class time, because Jakarta traffic can swallow an afternoon. Pick the studio nearest your hotel and avoid crossing the city at rush hour. Trial studios sit in malls: Central Park, Senayan City, PIK Avenue and Summarecon Serpong. PIK and Serpong are far from central Jakarta, so we'd choose Central Park or Senayan City for a short stay. Evening slots at 7:30pm and 8:00pm help if you sightsee by day. We haven't verified MRT or TransJakarta routes to each mall, so check them before you go. Pastry-minded readers can pair a class with our Jakarta cafe picks.

Dietary needs, halal and kids

Sponsored

ABC states it uses only halal ingredients but has not yet obtained halal certification from the Indonesian authority. Its current status is "no pork, no lard". Do not describe it as halal-certified. We found no vegetarian or allergy information, so ask before booking. Age limits matter for families. Cake and bread trials start at 9 years old. Cooking trials start at 13. Children aged 4 to 8 can join a separate Kids Course or occasional one-day lessons.

Tip

Cooking trials start at 13. Between ages 9 and 12, a baking trial is the only trial a child can book, and its packaging goes home with them.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from assumptions. Avoid these.

  • Arriving without a reservation. Walk-ins are not accepted.
  • Forgetting your apron and takeaway bag.
  • Expecting Indonesian dishes at a Japanese-style baking studio.
  • Booking Serpong or PIK at peak traffic.
  • Treating the membership briefing as a free extra.
