Last updated November 2026. The best time to visit Jakarta is the dry season, which one source puts at June to September. The trade-off is higher prices and more visitors, against wet-season flooding and slow traffic. If you can't hit that window, pick the shoulder months or plan a rainy-season trip around indoor stops.

Best Time to Visit Jakarta: The Short Answer

Aim for June to September if you want Monas, Kota Tua and day trips without constant rain. Sources disagree on the exact season edges, so treat April, May and October as transition months. If you travel from October to May, move outdoor stops to the morning and keep afternoons for museums and malls. Our guide to Jakarta in the rainy season goes deeper on that plan.

Jakarta's Climate in Plain Terms

Jakarta is tropical, so heat and humidity stay high all year. Agoda's Jakarta guide cites an average near 30°C (86°F) with humidity often above 80%. Two seasons matter more than four. Agoda puts the dry season at June to September and the rainy season at October to May. Enchanting Travels gives April to October as dry, but that is an Indonesia-wide guide, not a Jakarta one. Because the two disagree, check current climate data from Indonesia's BMKG weather agency before you lock in flights. Country-level advice also cites lows around 23°C (73°F) and mid-day highs near 27°C (80°F) in some months. Those are Indonesia-wide figures, so read them as a rough guide only.

Month-by-Month Guide

Rainfall totals are not sourced for this page, so the table gives direction only. Mark every row "verify" until you have checked BMKG data. Jakarta's wettest month is not confirmed here either.

Dry Season: What It's Good For

June to September suits the outdoor list. Walk Kota Tua and the old town in the morning, then head to Monas. Check current opening status and hours for the Monas top viewing platform before you go. Agoda also lists boat trips to the Thousand Islands for snorkeling in this window. Expect more visitors and firmer room rates. Hot afternoons still call for shade, water and an air-conditioned break. Free outdoor stops are covered in our Free Things to Do in Jakarta: Parks, Old Town & Mosque guide.

Rainy Season: What Changes and How to Make It Work

October to May brings frequent downpours. Flooding can slow roads, so build a buffer into every airport transfer and every fixed-time booking. Wet months can bring lower room rates. As a planning example only, not a quoted rate, a hotel at ~Rp 900,000 per night in a wet month could cost Rp 1,200,000+ in July. Check current rates on your dates. Rain tends to come in bursts, so keep mornings flexible. Good wet-day options include Jakarta's museums and the city's big malls. A massage session also fills a gray afternoon.

Festivals, Holidays and Events That Change Plans

Agoda places the Jakarta Fair in June at the Jakarta International Expo. Confirm the dates with the organizer first. Agoda also says Chinese New Year celebrations fall in January or February. Check venue details locally. Ramadan, Eid and school holidays can change prices, opening hours and road conditions. Dates shift each year, so confirm them against the official government holiday notice. Our nightlife guide is worth a check if you plan evening outings during fasting weeks.

Getting Around in Each Season

Agoda lists TransJakarta, with dedicated bus lanes, plus ride-hailing apps Gojek and Grab. Rain slows roads and surge pricing can follow, so allow extra time for flights from Soekarno-Hatta. Check live service details on the Jakarta MRT site. Rail avoids road jams, which helps in wet weather. Our getting around Jakarta guide compares the options in detail.

Where to Stay by Season

In the wet months, choose a base within walking distance of an MRT or TransJakarta stop. That cuts your exposure to flooded roads. In the dry season, location matters less, but book earlier. Compare areas in our 5 Best Areas: Where to Stay in Jakarta guide. Flood-prone neighborhoods are not named in our sources, so check local news for current conditions.

Tip

Pair a wet-month base near an MRT or TransJakarta stop with the planning example of Rp 900,000 per night, which is not a quoted rate.

Eating and Doing by Weather

Agoda names Pasar Santa for soto betawi and kerak telor, and Grand Indonesia for malls and dining. Both work on wet afternoons. Check opening hours on the Grand Indonesia site. On dry evenings, try a night market or a stroll through Jakarta's markets.

Fixed Dates: A Half-Day Plan

Start outdoor sights by 8 a.m., before afternoon cloud builds. Finish by early afternoon. Move to a museum, mall or food stop after that. Pack lightweight cotton, a rain jacket or umbrella, sunscreen and a hat. Carry water too. For mosquito-borne illness and flood-related health risks, follow official national health guidance before you travel.

Good to know

Keep the 8 a.m. start, since heat and humidity stay high all year with averages near 30°C (86°F).

Combining Jakarta with Bali or Java

Regional weather and crowds differ across Indonesia. Enchanting Travels places the rainy season at November to March for Bali and central Java. Jakarta's own pattern differs, so don't copy island advice. Plan the hop with our Bali to Jakarta route guide. Add Day Trips From Jakarta: Best Options, Times & Tips on dry days. Agoda mentions Mount Gede Pangrango National Park as a dry-season hike.

Mistakes to Avoid

Don't assume the dry-season dates are exact. Don't book a tight airport connection in the wet months. Don't plan every outdoor stop for the afternoon. Skip any fixed event date until the organizer confirms it. If you're still deciding whether to go at all, read whether Jakarta is worth visiting.
