Last updated November 2026: the best Jakarta museums for most visitors are the Kota Tua cluster around Fatahillah Square, Museum Nasional Indonesia, and Museum MACAN for modern art. Old Town packs six museums into one walkable area, while MACAN sits alone in Kebon Jeruk. Many of these places close on Mondays, so routing matters more than ticket price.

Best Jakarta Museums at a Glance

Pick by area first, then by time. Old Town suits history fans with 3–5 hours to spare. Museum Nasional Indonesia anchors a central Jakarta day near Monas. Modern art at MACAN needs an afternoon of its own. Most hours below come from older sources, so confirm them on official sites before you go.

Kota Tua Museums: Which Ones Are Worth It

Kota Tua has six museums around Fatahillah Square, and each sells its own ticket. Traveler listings suggest 3–5 hours for the district. Reported adult entry is Rp 5,000 at Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik. Jakarta History Museum, also called Museum Sejarah Jakarta, is the largest of the six. Its Dutch colonial building once served as the city hall of Batavia. For background on that era, read our Batavia-era history guide. Walking stops between the museums appear in our Old Town sightseeing walk.

  • Museum Sejarah Jakarta (Fatahillah): rooms on city history, old maps, antique furniture and a dungeon. Best for history fans. Caution: one traveler post cites Rp 50,000 for foreigners, so check the ticket desk.
  • Museum Bank Indonesia: set in the former De Javasche Bank building, built in 1909 and completed in 1926. Best for visitors who like clear, well-kept displays. Address: Jl. Pintu Besar Utara No. 3.
  • Museum Bank Mandiri: next to Bank Indonesia, in the former Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij headquarters. Teller halls and basement safe deposit boxes are the draw. Caution: it reportedly closes at 15:30.
  • Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik: porcelain, pottery and sculpture in an 1870 judicial building with two inner gardens. Best for a quiet midday break from the heat. Caution: one older source says photography is not allowed.
  • Museum Wayang: puppets and performance instruments from many places, in a building that began as a church. Some tombstones are displayed inside. Reported hours run until 17:00, the latest of the six.
  • Museum Bahari: a former spice warehouse turned maritime museum, combined with the Menara Syahbandar watchtower at Sunda Kelapa harbor. Best for maritime history. Caution: it reportedly closes at 16:00.
  • Magic Art 3D Museum: an optional, kid-friendly photo stop rather than a heritage museum. Check that it is open before you plan around it.

Museum Nasional Indonesia and Central Jakarta

Museum Nasional Indonesia sits at Jl. Medan Merdeka Barat No.12, Jakarta Pusat. Its official site groups the collection into archaeology, ethnography, geography, ceramics, numismatics and heraldry, prehistory, and history. Phone +62 21 3868172 for current visiting details. Galeri Nasional is at Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur No.14 and is reported near Monas, Istiqlal and the Cathedral. A 2018 source lists daily hours of 10:00–19:00 and free entry to the permanent collection. Temporary shows may charge, so confirm before you go. A news headline on the museum site mentions a free Wednesday-afternoon program with ARAMSA. Conditions are unknown, so check them against our free-entry options. Bad weather? The museum offers a virtual tour and an online exhibition through Google Arts & Culture. That makes a useful backup during wet-season planning.

Modern Art: Museum MACAN and Galleries

Museum MACAN is at AKR Tower, Jl. Panjang No.5, Kebon Jeruk, Jakarta Barat. A 2018 source lists Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00–20:00, with the last installation queue at 19:00. It reported Monday closures and an adult ticket of Rp 100,000. Treat all of that as stale and check the official MACAN site for current hours and tickets. The Kemang and Pasar Minggu galleries lie in South Jakarta, a different direction from MACAN. Dia.lo.gue (Jl. Kemang Selatan No.99A), Edwin's Gallery (Jl. Kemang Raya No. 21, closed Sundays) and Salihara (Jl. Salihara 16) were reported free in 2018. These are galleries, not museums, and each needs a fresh check. For more offbeat picks, see our lesser-known galleries and spots. Taman Mini Indonesia Indah also claims on-site museums, but current status and operator are unconfirmed here.

Sample Routes by Time Budget

All durations here are estimates, not sourced figures. Start Old Town routes early, because several museums reportedly close between 15:00 and 15:30. Mixing West and South Jakarta in one day invites traffic delays. Prefer a guide? Consider a guided Old Town option.

  • Half-day Kota Tua: Museum Sejarah Jakarta, then Museum Bank Indonesia, then a food break. Bakmi Kota Tua 1924 is one traveler-suggested stop.
  • Full-day Kota Tua: add Museum Wayang, Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik and Museum Bahari. Save the air-conditioned or shaded stops for midday.
  • Central Jakarta day: Museum Nasional Indonesia in the morning, then Galeri Nasional, with Monas and Istiqlal nearby.
  • Modern-art afternoon: Museum MACAN alone, arriving well before the reported 19:00 installation queue cutoff.
  • Two hours only: choose Museum Bank Indonesia or Museum Sejarah Jakarta, not both.

Tickets, Opening Hours and Closed Days

Kota Tua has no combined pass, so buy a ticket at each museum. One source puts the average at about Rp 5,000 per person. A 2026 traveler post cites Rp 50,000 for foreigners at Museum Sejarah Jakarta. Those figures conflict, so check the ticket desk or the Jakarta Tourism site. Ticket cost is small next to transport and time. Mondays are the big trap, since reported closures cover the Old Town museums and MACAN. Only MACAN has a sourced last-entry detail, the 19:00 installation queue. Ask other venues about last entry and payment methods.

Good to know

Treat budgets carefully, since Rp 50,000 for foreigners at Museum Sejarah Jakarta sits far above Rp 5,000 at Museum Seni Rupa dan Keramik.

Getting There and Where to Base Yourself

For Old Town, take the KRL commuter line to Jakarta Kota Station and walk a short distance to Fatahillah Square. The wider Kota Tua area is listed as open 8:00–21:00, although museums keep shorter hours. Traffic makes cross-town hops slow, so avoid chaining Old Town, central Jakarta and MACAN. Our moving between districts guide covers transport options. Budget travelers can look at Mangga Besar and Glodok-side stays for Old Town access. Compare neighborhoods in our choosing a base guide.

Tip

A KRL arrival at Kota Station leaves little slack: the area runs 8:00–21:00, but several museums reportedly close between 15:00 and 15:30.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from timing and assumptions. Plan the day around 15:00 closings, not the 17:00 Wayang hours.

  • Going on Monday, when the Old Town museums and MACAN are reported closed.
  • Assuming one combined ticket covers all six Kota Tua museums.
  • Walking Fatahillah Square at midday heat. Morning or late afternoon is cooler, per traveler reports.
  • Mixing West and South Jakarta in one day.
  • Trusting old hours, especially the 2018 MACAN and gallery data.
  • Assuming photography is allowed everywhere. Ask at each entrance.
