Last updated November 2026: the best things to do in Jakarta cluster around Kota Tua, the Merdeka Square and Monas area, two major museums, and a mosque or market stop. Heat, traffic and sprawl shape every plan. Pair one or two zones per day instead of crossing the city, and use the eight picks below as your menu.

Things to Do in Jakarta at a Glance

Start with geography. Old Town and the old harbour sit in the north, Merdeka Square and the National Museum anchor Central Jakarta, and Museum MACAN is in West Jakarta. Time estimates below are our rough planning figures, not official visit lengths. Ticket cells show only what the sources support, so confirm anything marked "check official site" before you go. If you are still deciding whether to come, our verdict on the city covers the trade-offs.

8 Best Things to Do in Jakarta by Area
Each pick is short on purpose. Follow the links for depth on a single zone.

- 1. Kota Tua (Old Town)
- Old Batavia is a Dutch-colonial district around a large cobbled square, Taman Fatahillah. Evenings are livelier, with street food sellers and performers.
- Allow 2-3 hours. Our Old Town walking guide covers the buildings, and the city's colonial past explains why they are there.
- 2. Sunda Kelapa old harbour
- Traditional Phinisi wooden boats line up at this old port in the north. It sits a short hop from Kota Tua, so pair them in one half-day.
- Walking in alone is possible. A guided tour adds access and context, so agree any fee before you start.
- 3. Merdeka Square and Monas
- Merdeka Square covers roughly one square kilometer in Central Jakarta, with the National Monument (Monas) at its center. Shade is scarce, so go early.
- Reports say Monas's tower has been temporarily closed for cleaning and maintenance since September 2026, while the surrounding park stays open. Confirm on the Jakarta provincial tourism site before you plan a ride up.
- 4. Istiqlal Mosque
- Istiqlal's modern design stands out among Indonesian mosques. Visitor procedures have changed in recent years, and the mosque runs a formal reservation service for groups.
- Follow instructions from official staff, dress modestly, and do not pay anyone who offers to guide you at the entrance without checking first. For other places of worship, see Jakarta's temples.
- 5. National Museum of Indonesia
- This is the strongest history stop in the city, from prehistoric artifacts to classical Hindu-Buddhist stone statues. Budget 2-3 hours.
- It is a good midday refuge from heat. More options are in our guide to the city's main museums.
- 6. Museum MACAN
- Contemporary Indonesian and international art in West Jakarta, opened in 2017. Exhibitions rotate, so check the current exhibition program before buying a ticket.
- Plan about 2 hours. It works well as the anchor of a rainy afternoon.
- 7. Jalan Surabaya antique market
- Antiques, paintings and handicrafts line this street. Prices vary from stall to stall, so compare and bargain politely.
- For more bargaining grounds, see the city's market districts and the after-dark night market options.
- 8. Thousand Islands day trip
- Pulau Pramuka and Pulau Tidung are two popular small islands off the coast for snorkeling and beach time.
- This works best if Jakarta is your only Indonesian stop. If you are heading to Bali next, skip it. More ideas are in our day-trip roundup.
How to Plan Your Time

One day: pair Kota Tua and Sunda Kelapa in the morning, then head to the National Museum, which runs 8 AM to 6 PM Tuesday to Thursday and 8 AM to 8 PM Friday to Sunday. Two days: add Merdeka Square at dawn, Istiqlal, and Museum MACAN, which opens 10 AM to 6 PM with last entry at 5:30 PM. Three days: add the Thousand Islands or a shopping afternoon. Both museums close on Mondays, so schedule outdoor zones for that day. When it rains, swap in museums and air-conditioned malls, and read up on wet-season planning or when to go if your dates are flexible.
Costs, Tickets and Opening Hours

Published 2026 figures are limited, so treat these as leads and confirm before you travel. Foreign adult entry to the National Museum was reported at Rp150,000. Museum MACAN was reported at Rp88,000 Tuesday to Friday and Rp110,000 on Saturday and Sunday. National Museum hours also close on national public holidays. Monas, Istiqlal and Kota Tua attractions have no confirmed prices in our sources, so check the national tourism site or each venue. We cannot support a daily-budget total, so build yours from transport, entry fees and meals.
| Attraction | Reported 2026 hours | Reported price |
|---|---|---|
| National Museum | Tue-Thu 8 AM-6 PM; Fri-Sun 8 AM-8 PM; closed Mon | Rp150,000 (foreign adult) |
| Museum MACAN | Tue-Sun 10 AM-6 PM; last entry 5:30 PM; closed Mon | Rp88,000 Tue-Fri; Rp110,000 Sat-Sun |
| Monas tower | Reportedly closed since Sept 2026 | Check official site |
| Istiqlal Mosque | Check visitor rules | Check official site |

Where to Stay and How to Get Around
The MRT is most useful between South and Central Jakarta, with fares reported at Rp3,000 to Rp14,000 on the Jakarta MRT site. TransJakarta covers a wider network. A TransBandara service links Soekarno-Hatta Airport and Blok M at a reported Rp15,000 fare from September 2026. Use taxis or ride-hailing for places transit misses, and expect slow roads at peak hours. Our transport guide goes deeper. Choose a base near your main zone using our neighborhood breakdown.

Culture, Nightlife and Free Options
Bharata Theatre has been listed for wayang wong, a Javanese dance drama. Confirm that it is still operating before planning an evening around it. For drinks, start with evening neighborhoods and bar options, and go out in a group if you are unsure about an area. Budget travelers can stack free stops, and quieter finds appear in lesser-known spots. Guided days are covered under organized tours. After long walking days, a massage is an easy reset. Mistakes to Avoid and Etiquette
Most problems come from overpacking days and ignoring the weather. Keep these in mind.
- Do not cross zones in one day. Pick Old Town or Central Jakarta, not both plus the south.
- Skip midday outdoor walks at Merdeka Square, where shade is scarce.
- Check hours before you go, especially Monday closures.
- Avoid taxi-only days in peak traffic. Mix in the MRT or TransJakarta.
- Dress modestly and remove shoes where asked at religious sites.
- Treat unofficial guides with caution and agree on any fee beforehand.
