Last updated November 2026. The best things to do in Lombok are Mount Rinjani, the Senaru waterfalls, the Gili Islands, south-coast surf beaches and Sasak culture. Lombok is big and the roads are slow, so this guide groups every pick by base area. Allow about 5 days for a relaxed first trip, and check the booking notes before you lock dates.

Best Things to Do in Lombok at a Glance

Lombok splits into clear zones: Senaru and Sembalun in the north, the Gilis off the northwest coast, Kuta in the south, and Mataram in the west. Rinjani rises to roughly 3,726 m (verify against the park authority). Cross-island hops take longer than the map suggests, so pick two or three bases rather than all of them. If you are still deciding on the island itself, read our take on whether Lombok suits you.

Each pick below lists what it is, how to reach it and one caution. Times and fees come from competitor reports, so verify before you book.

  • Trek Mount Rinjani or the Segara Anak crater rim
    • Choose the crater rim for a shorter, tough overnight or the summit for a multi-day push. Treks run with a licensed guide, and Senaru and Sembalun are the usual starting points.
    • Seasonal closures and booking rules change, so confirm with the national park authority before paying a deposit.
  • Chase the Senaru waterfalls
    • Sindang Gila is the easier walk, and Tiu Kelep follows with river crossings and boulders. Wear shoes that grip wet rock.
    • Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel make a possible day out from the south, so verify the drive time on a map. For a wetter option, see whitewater rafting in central Lombok.
  • Island-hop the Gilis
    • Gili Air suits mixed groups, Gili Meno is the quiet honeymoon pick, and Gili Trawangan is the party island. No motorbikes run on any of them.
    • Strait crossings can be rough, so compare public and fast boats on our Lombok ferry guide. Never touch or chase turtles.
  • Snorkel and dive the Sekotong Gilis
    • Gili Gede, Gili Sudak, Gili Kedis and Gili Asahan sit off the Sekotong Peninsula in the southwest. Boat trips from there are quieter than the main Gilis.
    • Belongas Bay offers advanced diving with strong currents, so book an operator that briefs you properly.
  • Surf and beach-hop around Kuta
    • Selong Belanak is the usual beginner surf beach, Tanjung Aan suits snorkeling, and Mawi and Ekas draw experienced surfers. Pink Beach has rough access roads, so verify how to get there.
    • Compare sand and surf on our south-coast beach rundown, then book lessons via our Lombok surf guide.
  • Visit a Sasak village
    • Sade and Rambitan show thatch-roofed homes and weaving. Expect guide fees and souvenir selling, because both are geared to visitors.
    • Nyongkolan wedding parades and the Bau Nyale festival depend on dates. Treat them as luck, not a plan.
  • See Mataram's heritage sites
    • Mayura Water Palace and Pura Meru sit in the Mataram and Cakranegara area, and Lingsar Temple is a short drive out. Dress modestly and carry a sarong.
    • More stops are on our temples in Lombok guide.
  • Eat your way through the warungs

Sample Itineraries for 3, 5 and 7 Days

Transit between bases is the main cost, so keep each plan to two or three stops. Verify every transfer time with your driver. Add an hour to any estimate, because Lombok roads are slow and winding.

Costs, Tickets and Booking Tips

No official price list was supplied, so treat these as competitor-reported figures to verify. Tiu Kelep entry was reported at around Rp15,000. Scooter rental was reported at around Rp60,000 per 24 hours. Surf packages were reported at Rp450,000 to Rp595,000. Book Rinjani and boats ahead, and decide the rest on the day. Carry cash, because ATMs can be unreliable outside Mataram, in Tetebatu and on the Gilis.

When to Go and Rainy-Season Plan B

Sources conflict on exact Rinjani trek months, with one placing the closure at January to April. Check the park authority for current rules. For climate data, use BMKG's forecasts. Monthly guidance is on our best time to visit page. In rain, museums, massage and cooking classes still work, while Rinjani, Pink Beach and slippery waterfall trails are better skipped. More ideas are in our rainy-season plan, and a massage session fills a wet afternoon.

Tip

Rinjani rises to roughly 3,726 m, and in rain it is one of the trails better skipped.

Getting There and Getting Around

Flights from Bali take about one hour. Check arrivals on the Lombok airport site and read our airport transfer guide. A public boat reportedly runs hourly from Padang Bai to Lembar in 4-5 hours, so verify with ASDP. Full options are in our getting-to-Lombok guide. Public transport is thin, so choose a driver, a tour or a scooter. Scooter basics are on our scooter rental page.

Good to know

Scooter rental was reported at around Rp60,000 per 24 hours. Thin public transport means pricing that against a driver or tour before you commit.

Etiquette, Safety and Responsible Travel

Sponsored

Lombok is predominantly Muslim. Cover shoulders and knees away from beaches, and plan around Friday prayers and Ramadan. Wear a helmet and carry a valid license on a scooter. Do not feed or touch marine life, and take your trash with you. Pork and alcohol are less available than in Bali. Sundowners and music are covered in our beach club guide and our nightlife guide. Mistakes to avoid include underestimating drive times and booking Rinjani without checking season and operator.

Plan Your Gili Boat Crossing

Sponsored

Choose your Gili crossing around sea conditions, luggage and where you begin. Fast boats are the practical option from Bali when schedules align, but crossings can feel rough in the Lombok Strait. Public boats cost less and can be better for flexible island-hopping, although departures and weather can disrupt plans.

Build in buffer time before a flight or onward booking. The Padang Bai to Lembar public ferry is reported to run hourly and take 4–5 hours, but confirm the current ASDP timetable before travel. That ferry reaches Lombok, not the Gilis, so you still need a transfer or local boat connection.

For the Gilis themselves, avoid treating all three as interchangeable. Gili Air works well for mixed groups, Gili Meno suits a quieter stay, and Gili Trawangan has the busiest nightlife. Plan 1–3 days on the islands so a delayed boat does not consume your whole visit.
