8 Best Things to Do in Raja Ampat, Grouped by Island
Things to do in Raja Ampat for divers and non-divers, grouped by base island, with boat transfer effort, permit notes and safety basics.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: the best things to do in Raja Ampat are snorkelling and diving, island hopping to viewpoints, village visits and birdwatching. Almost all of them depend on which island you sleep on and how many boat transfers you can afford. We grouped them by base island and traveler type, so divers and non-divers can both plan a realistic trip.

8 Best Things to Do in Raja Ampat, by Base Island

Raja Ampat has four main islands: Batanta, Waigeo, Salawati and Misool. The name means "Four Kings". Each entry below shows who it suits, where to base yourself and the trade-off. Treat boat times as planning estimates and confirm them with your host.

- 1. Snorkel a house reef on Kri, Gam or Mansuar
- Best for snorkellers and divers. Base on Kri, Gam or Mansuar, where island profiles describe strong reefs close to the accommodation.
- Trade-off: Kri is the most popular island and has many dive centres, so it is also the busiest. Ask for a homestay with a good house reef and you can snorkel without paying for a boat.
- 2. Dive with an operator that passes a safety checklist
- Best for certified divers. Diving is described as year-round, with water at 28–30°C. Most homestay dive centres reach almost all the same sites as liveaboards, according to one planning guide.
- Check oxygen on board, briefing quality and diver-to-guide ratio before you book. Our guided Raja Ampat tours guide covers when a booked package makes sense.
- 3. Climb to the Piaynemo viewpoint in the Pam (Fam) Islands
- Best for photographers and non-divers. One trip report put the boat ride at about 2 hours from a Batanta-area resort, and roughly the same from Waisai.
- Trade-off: effort is high for a single viewpoint, so pair it with snorkel stops. Our island hopping routes show how to combine stops without backtracking.
- 4. Visit Arborek village
- Best for culture and easy snorkelling. Arborek is a small sand cay with village life, a dive shop and snorkelling, and it sits close to Piaynemo.
- Dress modestly on land and ask before photographing people. A village stay also keeps tourism income in the community.
- 5. Hike to Batanta Waterfall
- Best for non-divers who want a jungle day. Batanta is known for waterfalls, dugongs and remote homestays.
- One published account describes roughly 25 minutes by boat and 40 minutes on foot from a resort off Batanta. Your time will vary with your starting point, so check with your host.
- 6. Look for Birds of Paradise and hornbills
- Best for birdwatchers. Gam is listed for Birds of Paradise, and Mansuar for birdlife and a mid-island lake.
- Go early with a local guide. One account describes a sunset boat trip to watch Blyth's hornbills return to roost near Batanta.
- 7. Kayak calm bays and photograph the seascapes
- Best for slow-paced travelers. West Waigeo is described as having bays, remote island hideaways and ancient handprints, and Gam has Kabui Bay.
- Trade-off: West Waigeo needs more transfer effort, and the handprint sites need a local guide.
- 8. Plan Wayag and Misool as separate, higher-effort trips
- Best for travelers with time and budget. Wayag needs specific access planning, and Misool has no members of the local homestay association, according to one island index.
- We'd treat both as add-ons, not as part of a 3-night trip. You do not need a liveaboard to see top sites, but these two are where liveaboards and charters make the most sense.
Pick-by-Base-Island Table

Where you sleep sets your activity list. Use this table to match a base to your interests, then read the transfer note. Effort is our editorial estimate from the island profiles, not a verified timetable. Our where to stay guide covers the accommodation choices.
| Base | Best activities | Best for | Transfer effort | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Waisai / Gam | Kabui Bay, Birds of Paradise, village access | Culture, birders | Low | Fewer dive-centre options near Waisai |
| Kri / Mansuar | House reefs, dive centres, lake, trekking | Divers, snorkellers | Low to medium | Kri is the busiest island |
| Arborek / Pam | Village life, snorkelling, Piaynemo | Culture, photographers | Medium | Small cay with limited space |
| Batanta | Waterfalls, dugongs, snorkelling | Snorkellers, hikers | Medium | Remote homestays, longer transfers |
| West Waigeo / Wayag access | Reefs, bays, handprints, Wayag | Photographers | High | Wayag needs specific planning |
| Misool | Remote reefs and seascapes | Divers with time | High | Fewer published local contacts |

Things to Do in Raja Ampat Without Diving
Non-divers are well served here. Our shortlist is snorkelling, a village visit, the Batanta waterfall, a viewpoint, birdwatching and kayaking. One guide notes that her snorkelling sessions lasted about 20 minutes at a time, so short sessions work fine. Check the sea conditions and currents before you swim off a beach. Our Raja Ampat beach guide covers where the swimming is easiest.

Homestay, Resort or Liveaboard: Activity Access
Homestays, resorts and liveaboards give different access. Homestay dive centres reach almost all the same sites as liveaboards at a fraction of the cost, according to one planning guide. Homestays can also reach places liveaboards cannot. Resorts bundle transfers and are easier for first-timers. Liveaboards suit divers who want Wayag or Misool in one trip. Boat travel is the big cost, so link islands carefully and share boats where you can.
Compare operators on a maximum of 4 divers per guide, since homestay dive centres reach almost all the same sites as liveaboards.
How Many Days Do You Need? 3, 5 and 7+ Night Plans

Island moves eat time, so fewer bases beat more sights. Use these outlines as guidance, not a fixed itinerary.
- 3 nights
- Pick one base, such as Kri or Gam, and stay put. Do house-reef snorkelling plus one boat day to Piaynemo or a village.
- 5 nights
- Use two bases at most. Add the Batanta waterfall or a Kabui Bay kayak day, and keep one buffer day for weather.
- 7+ nights
- Add a third base such as West Waigeo or Misool, or book a liveaboard. Avoid doubling back through Waisai, since homestays can arrange onward transfers between islands.
Costs, Permits and Transfers
One source quotes the marine park entry permit at Rp1,000,000. Another mentions a separate Visitor Entry Ticket. Check the current structure, price and validity with the park or local government before you travel. The Sorong–Waisai ferry is cited at about Rp100,000. A taxi from Sorong airport to the public harbour is cited at Rp100,000, and a motorbike taxi at Rp20,000. Sharing a boat is the main saving on transfers. Carry enough cash, since there are no ATMs outside Sorong and Waisai.
Getting There and Around

Sorong is the gateway. From there, a ferry runs to Waisai on Waigeo, cited at 9:00 and 14:00, taking about 2 hours. A flight from Sorong to Marinda Airport at Waisai is cited at about 30 minutes, though reader comments say rain can cancel it. Ask your host to arrange a Waisai pickup. Our Raja Ampat transport guide covers the ferry and flight caveats. Coming from Bali? Read our Bali to Raja Ampat routes first. Check departures on the Ngurah Rai airport site, and start national entry research with Wonderful Indonesia.
Sorong, the gateway, is also the nearest hospital at 1.5 hours by boat, and pharmacies there and in Waisai stock anti-malarials.
Best Time for Each Activity
Diving is cited as year-round, with conditions that vary by season. Water temperature is cited at 28–30°C. Sea conditions change, and mornings are usually calmest, according to one planning guide. Plan boat legs early in the day. For a rainy-day fallback, switch to village visits, birdwatching or a sheltered kayak. Our best time to visit guide covers the seasonal detail.
Safety, Health and Responsible Travel

Raja Ampat is remote. The nearest recompression chamber is cited as Manado, a 1.5-hour flight. The nearest hospital is cited as Sorong, 1.5 hours by boat. Choose operators with oxygen on board, thorough briefings and small groups; one operator publishes a maximum of 4 divers per guide. Buy travel insurance with dive cover, and ask a doctor or travel clinic about malaria. Pharmacies in Sorong and Waisai stock anti-malarials, according to one source. Dress conservatively on land. Wear a rash guard and reef-safe sunscreen. Carry out your plastic, since garbage disposal on the islands is difficult.
Surf, Nightlife and What Raja Ampat Is Not
Do not expect a surf or party scene. We'd treat surf in Raja Ampat as a niche side topic. There is no real nightlife in Raja Ampat beyond a quiet drink at your lodging. Evenings revolve around dinner, stargazing and early starts.
Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems come from logistics, not activities.
- Tight same-day connections
- Do not book a flight right after a ferry. One reader comment notes that a ferry delay is always possible.
- Too many island moves
- Each move adds cost and time. Stick to two bases for a 5-night trip.
- No prebooked pickup
- Request a Waisai pickup when you book, especially if you are headed to anywhere other than Kri.
- Relying on ATMs
- There are none outside Sorong and Waisai. Bring cash before you leave.
- Assuming you need a liveaboard
- Homestay dive centres reach almost all the same sites, so book a liveaboard only for Wayag or Misool.
