Short Answer: Best Months at a Glance

Our verdict is October to April for most travelers. Sources disagree on what "best" means, so we pick by priority rather than a single month. Sea comfort, mantas, crowds and price each point to a slightly different window.

  • Calmest seas: roughly January to March, though December and January can bring strong winds in the north.
  • Mantas: roughly November to February. Verify timing with your operator.
  • Fewest crowds: April–May and September–October.
  • Lowest price: July, with a rougher-sea trade-off.

Dry Season vs Wet Season: What the Labels Actually Mean

Two monsoons shape the year. The Northwest Monsoon runs roughly October to April, and the Southeast Monsoon runs roughly May to September. Operators call the first "dry," but rain can fall any day of the year. December and January often bring the heaviest rain and the strongest winds, so some locals call that stretch a second wet season. Temperatures barely move. Daytime highs reach about 31°C (88°F) and nights rarely fall below 24°C (75°F). Sea surface temperature averages about 29°C (84°F). Forecasts are shaky here because weather stations are sparse. Microclimates mean one island can be sunny while another is drenched, and evening clouds often build over the larger islands. Read forecasts for tendencies, not point predictions. For national climate data, check Indonesia's meteorological agency, BMKG, and the Wonderful Indonesia tourism site for general trip planning.

Use this table as a starting point. Operators disagree on several rows, so we mark conflicts with "verify." Visibility ranges from about 9 m to over 30 m depending on site, plankton and wind, and no single figure holds across sources.

North vs South: Choose Your Region by Month

Region matters more than most guides admit. North and Central Raja Ampat, meaning the Dampier Strait and Mansuar, are diveable year-round. Expect localized squalls in June and July. Misool in the south is where sources conflict. One operator reports rougher conditions from mid-June to mid-September. Another calls Misool sheltered and excellent year-round. We can't settle that, so ask each operator which sites they use in each month. Our rule of thumb: pick the north from May to September, and either region from October to April.

  • Mistake to avoid: booking a fixed Misool itinerary in July or August with no sheltered backup plan.
  • Ask for a written fallback site list before you pay a deposit.

Best Time for Divers: Mantas, Visibility, Currents

Manta timing is roughly November to February. Sources split between a January–February peak and a November start, so verify with your operator. Blue Magic and Magic Mountain are the cleaning stations most often named. Water holds around 27–28°C (81–82°F) in the peak months. Currents stay strong all year, so carry a reef hook and safety sausage. Choppy June–September water is harder for less experienced divers. Liveaboards cross open water most freely in calm months, and some stop running in rough ones.

Good to know

Peak-month water sits near 27–28°C (81–82°F), just under the 29°C (84°F) sea average, so temperature rarely separates the seasons.

Best Time for Non-Divers, Families and Island-Hoppers

Crossing comfort drives this decision. Calm months from October to April make longer boat days easier, especially for anyone prone to seasickness. Wayag's viewpoint can catch strong southerly winds in July. Our island-hopping guide covers routes by sea state. Pair it with Raja Ampat Beaches: Best Sandbanks, Swim Spots & Boat Access for sandy stops. Homestay-based trips stay flexible, and where to stay compares land-based options with liveaboards.

Crowds, Prices and Booking Lead Time

Peak crowding runs around Christmas and New Year. April–May and September–October are shoulder months. Liveaboards often sell out months ahead for the calm season. One operator claims July prices run 20–30% lower. Treat that as an operator claim, not a verified fact. As a worked example only, a hypothetical €1,000 December quote would become roughly €700 to €800 at that discount. Real quotes vary by operator, so compare current offers on Raja Ampat Tours: Liveaboard vs Homestay vs Land Tours (2026). Rough seas can lengthen some crossings up to four times, so lost days are the true cost of a shoulder-season trip. Build in buffer days.

Tip

One operator claims July runs 20–30% cheaper, but that discount comes with rougher seas and disputed Misool conditions, so weigh price against sea state.
