Last updated November 2026. Raja Ampat tours come in three main formats: liveaboard cruises, day trips from a fixed homestay or resort, and land-based guided activities. We'd match divers with 7 or more days to a liveaboard, and non-divers, families and short trips to a homestay base. Use this guide with our Raja Ampat things to do overview to choose a format before you pay a deposit.

Raja Ampat Tours at a Glance: The Three Formats

Few pages compare all three formats side by side, so we built the table below from operator and aggregator figures. Treat every number as a lead to confirm before booking. Our editorial judgement is that a homestay base is easier than a liveaboard when you have only 4 to 5 days. Most liveaboard itineraries we found run 7 days or longer. Check operator schedules before you commit.

Liveaboard Tours: Wayag, Misool and Dampier Strait

A liveaboard covers distance that day boats cannot, which is why Wayag trips are usually sold this way. One local operator describes a simple wooden boat for 12 guests, with clean cabins and a sun deck. It lists a 7-day Wayag trip at US$1,250 per person. A 10-day Wayag or Misool trip is listed at US$1,550 per person. A booking aggregator shows six listed boats from €288 to €430 per day. It lists whole trips from €445 to €15,574. These are very different boat classes, so read them as ranges, not an average. On the simple boat, the operator describes 4 to 5 snorkel sessions a day of at least 1 hour, plus trekking. Wayag is the northern, iconic karst route. Misool is quieter, with southern reefs and lagoons. We'd pick Misool if you want fewer boats around, and Wayag if the famous viewpoint matters most.

  • Usually included: cabin, meals and snorkel guiding, per the operator's own FAQ
  • Often extra: marine park PIN, gear rental and flights to Sorong
  • Ask directly about village or landing fees, since we found no confirmed figure

Homestay and Resort-Based Tours: Day Trips From a Fixed Base

A fixed base suits non-divers, families and anyone short on days. You sleep on land and take a charter boat out each morning. Our guide to homestays and resorts covers where to sleep. Piaynemo is described as a smaller, much cheaper version of the Wayag karst view, with homestay access. Wayag is described as the single most expensive trip in Raja Ampat. At low tide, sandbanks join Kri and Mansuar, so you can walk between them. Our island-hopping guide maps the day-trip stops. You also get more flexibility, since you can cancel a day if the sea is rough.

  • Kri Island: fits snorkelers in the Dampier Strait area; skip it if you want remote reefs
  • Arborek: fits a village visit and jetty snorkel; confirm access and fees with your host
  • Piaynemo: fits the karst viewpoint on a budget; its steep wooden staircase suits fit walkers only
  • Wayag and Misool: need a liveaboard or a long, costly charter; skip them on a 4-day trip

Raja Ampat Diving and Snorkeling Tours

Diving here is mostly drift diving in moderate, constant currents. One liveaboard source suggests at least an intermediate certification. Bring an SMB with a finger spool so the crew can find you after an unplanned ascent. Liveaboards usually depart from Sorong. Snorkelers need less gear and less certification. Confident swimmers can expect the 4 to 5 daily sessions described above on a simple boat. Beginners and children do better with shorter sessions from a homestay base. Sightings of mantas, sharks or birds are never guaranteed, and weather can change any plan.

Land-Based and Cultural Tours

Land tours are the cheapest way to add variety, and our full list of activities shows more options. Dawn birds-of-paradise viewing needs a guide and a pre-dawn start. One visitor reports leaving at 5 am for a viewing site 30 minutes from Waisai. Two low tides a day, with a range of up to about 2 m, expose reef flats and sandbanks for walking. Wear foot protection and never touch coral. Our beach guide lists sandy stops worth timing around the tide. Near Misool, Tomolol Cave and nearby rock art, estimated at 3,000 to 5,000 years old, sit on guided routes. To book, ask your homestay host or the Raja Ampat Homestay Information Center in Waisai, which one source says can connect you with guides.

Tip

Birds-of-paradise viewing starts at 5 am, 30 minutes from Waisai, so the 9:00 ferry is too late for that morning.

Fees, Permits and What a Quoted Price Excludes

One operator FAQ says each visitor must buy a marine park entrance PIN for Rp 1,000,000, valid for one year. Confirm that with the park authority or your booking page. The same operator says police issue a free travel permit on entry. It asks for 2 passport photos and 2 copies of your passport ID page and arrival visa stamp. Verify the current requirement before you fly. For entry rules, start with Wonderful Indonesia official tourism. Operators also flag malaria risk, so consult a physician. We make no medical claims.

  • Marine park PIN: ask whether it is in the quote
  • Flights to Sorong, plus airport taxi and ferry
  • Gear rental, dive equipment and torch
  • Village or landing fees: ask for the figure in writing

Getting to Your Tour Start: Sorong and Waisai

Everything starts at Sorong airport. A taxi to the port costs about Rp 100,000 and takes about 15 minutes, per one older source. Public ferries to Waisai reportedly leave at 9:00 and 14:00. Fares were about Rp 100,000 standard and Rp 150,000 VIP. Sources disagree on crossing time, and one package says about 2 hours. Confirm the schedule and fare before you fly. Our Raja Ampat transport guide goes deeper. From Bali, read our Bali to Raja Ampat routing. Check flights at Ngurah Rai International Airport, since most connections run through Bali, Jakarta or Makassar.

Best Season for Raja Ampat Tours

Liveaboards mostly run from October to April, and one operator calls that window calmer with clearer visibility. Another source lists two rainy periods, July to August and November to December. It adds strong trade winds from July to September. These signals partly conflict, so we won't name one perfect month. Our season-by-season guide weighs them. A homestay base lets you swap a rough day for a land tour.

How to Choose and Book Your Tour

Sponsored

Start with days and budget, then pick the format. Ask for a written list of inclusions. Walk away from any operator that cannot say what the quote covers.

  • 4 to 5 days: homestay base with day trips
  • 7 days or more with a diving focus: liveaboard
  • Low budget: Piaynemo from a homestay plus village walks
  • Red flags: vague inclusions, no safety briefing, no licence details, guaranteed wildlife sightings

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Comparing a US$1,250 trip with a €430-a-day trip is the most common error, because the boats and inclusions differ. Booking a Wayag liveaboard for 4 days is another. We'd also avoid skipping the PIN question, since it adds Rp 1,000,000 to a budget. Leave slack around ferry times, which sources list at 9:00 and 14:00. Finally, do not book a charter on weather you cannot change.
