7 Things To Do in Flores, Indonesia: Routes & Days

The quick version

Plan Flores Island beyond Komodo: Wae Rebo, Bajawa, Kelimutu and Riung, with how many days you need and how to get around.

Last updated November 2026: this guide covers things to do in Flores, the Indonesian island in East Nusa Tenggara, not Flores in Guatemala. Flores is far more than Komodo, and the real trade-off is time versus distance on one long, winding road. We group the island by region so you can choose between a Labuan Bajo base and an overland route.

Our short answer: base in Labuan Bajo for 3 days, or add Ruteng and Bajawa if you have 5–7 days. Items run west to east along the island's single main road. Times and fees below come from one competitor guide, so confirm each before booking. For a town-only plan, use our Labuan Bajo guide.

  • 1. Komodo National Park boat day from Labuan Bajo
    • Komodo and Rinca are the dragon islands, and you reach them by boat. One guide says a tour is required, so check with the park authority.
    • Padar's viewpoint is reported as a climb of about 30 minutes. We'd choose sunrise, because clouds tend to form in early afternoon.
    • Add Pink Beach, Kalong Island's flying foxes at dusk, or Goa Rangko cave. Our Komodo guide has the detail.
  • 2. Cancar spiderweb rice fields and Liang Bua cave
    • Cancar's spiderweb-pattern fields are reached by a short walk up to a viewpoint, which charges a small fee.
    • Liang Bua is where Homo floresiensis bones were found. You cannot enter the cave, but a museum next door shows a replica.
  • 3. Wae Rebo village trek
    • Wae Rebo is reachable only on a trek reported at 2–3 hours. An overnight homestay is the usual format.
    • We'd treat it as a full day plus a night, not a quick stop. Confirm current access rules and fees before you go.
    • We have not verified any heritage listing for Wae Rebo, so we do not claim one.
  • 4. Ngada villages and Wolobobo near Bajawa
    • Bena is the best-known Ngada village. Luba and Tolelela are nearby alternatives.
    • Wolobobo viewpoint is about a 30-minute drive from Bajawa, with views of Mount Inierie. Go early, since afternoon cloud often hides the volcano.
    • Inierie itself is reported as a steep four-hour climb on volcanic ash. Wawo Muda's lakes are about a 1.5-hour hike.
  • 5. Kelimutu crater lakes
    • Kelimutu has three crater lakes at the top of a mountain, and their colours change over time.
    • One guide says the colours look better after about 9am than at sunrise. Moni is the usual base.
  • 6. Moni hot springs and Koka beach
    • Lia Sembe is the more developed hot spring near Moni. Kolorongo is undeveloped and sits in a rice field.
    • Koka beach is a snorkeling stop if you continue toward Maumere.
  • 7. Riung 17 Islands Marine Park
    • Riung is a remote add-on on the north coast, best for snorkeling.
    • It is reported as about 5 hours' drive from Bajawa or Ende. We'd skip it on trips under 8 days.

Getting To and Around Flores

Most visitors fly into Labuan Bajo Airport (LBJ): Getting to Town & Arrival Guide. One competitor lists direct flights from Jakarta, Denpasar/Bali and Surabaya. Our Bali to Labuan Bajo page covers that route. Ferries also run from Labuan Bajo, Ende, Maumere and Larantuka, but departures may be weekly, so ask at the port. Read How to Get to Labuan Bajo: Flights, Transfers & Timing for more options, or Bali to Flores: Flights, Ferries & Overland Routes Compared for the island view. One road makes map distances mislead. We'd hire a private car with a driver for the overland leg. A scooter is an option, and one guide reports 150k IDR per day in Ende. We found no verified drive times, so ask your driver or guesthouse.

How Many Days You Need in Flores

Three days fits Labuan Bajo and Komodo only. Five to 7 days adds Ruteng and Bajawa. Eight or more days lets you drive overland to Ende and Kelimutu. One guide suggests 5–7 days for any overland trip and 3–4 days if time is short. Each step up drops something, so decide what you'd skip.

Good to know

A Wae Rebo overnight fits 5–7 days, because the 2–3 hour trek each way takes a full day plus a night.

  • 3 days: Komodo boat day, Padar and Rangko cave. Skip everything east of town, or try Day Trips From Labuan Bajo: Komodo, Waterfalls & How to Choose.
  • 5–7 days: add Cancar, a Wae Rebo overnight and Bajawa's villages. Skip Kelimutu.
  • 8+ days: continue to Moni and Kelimutu. Skip Riung unless you want a remote add-on.

Best Time To Go and Seasonal Gotchas

Sponsored

Dive visibility is reported as best from April to November. Dragons may be harder to spot during mating season, May to August, per one guide. Clouds tend to form on Padar and in Bajawa by afternoon, so plan viewpoints for morning. Kelimutu may look better after about 9am. Our best time to visit page has monthly detail.

Tip

Schedule Padar and Bajawa viewpoints for morning, then reach Kelimutu after about 9am, when its colours may look better.

Costs, Permits, and Booking

One competitor guide reports a Komodo park fee of 500,000 IDR per person from 2023, charged per year for divers. That is a 2023 claim, so check current rates with the Komodo National Park authority. We have no verified dive prices, so ask operators for current quotes. A boat day suits 3 days. A liveaboard suits divers who want more park time. For Rangko cave, a scooter plus a local boat is a cheaper DIY option than a tour. Ask for the boat price in the village, as we cannot verify a rate.

Culture and Food on Flores

Caci is a Manggarai whip dance, now mostly performed for visitors. Coffee grows around Ruteng and Bajawa, so buy beans there. Is Flores Worth It? Common Mistakes

Sponsored

We think it is, if you match days to distance. Trying to cover Komodo, Wae Rebo and Kelimutu in 3 days is the biggest mistake. Another is counting on sunset at Wolobobo or Padar, since afternoon cloud is common. Wae Rebo also needs allowance for a 2–3 hour trek each way. See Is Labuan Bajo Worth Visiting? Verdict by Traveler Type for the gateway verdict.
