Quick answer: the fastest way from Bali to Flores
Flying wins for most trips. Direct flights from Denpasar to Labuan Bajo run daily, with published schedules of roughly 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes. Route-level detail sits in our Denpasar to Labuan Bajo flight guide. For other ways in, see our wider arrival options. Slower routes trade days for lower fares. The ferry chain takes 2-3 days, the through-bus 30-36 hours or more, and backpacker boats 3-4 days.

Bali to Flores at a glance: which route should you choose?
Match the route to your constraint: time, budget, flexibility or diving plans. All figures below are indicative, so verify them before booking. Ferry and bus ranges overlap, but they are different products, as the cost section explains.

| Route | Duration | Indicative cost (one way) | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct flight, Denpasar to Labuan Bajo | About 1 hr 15 min | Rp 900,000-2,000,000 | Time-poor travelers, divers, liveaboard guests |
| Ferry-hopping via Lombok and Sumbawa | 2-3 days | Rp 500,000-1,000,000 | Budget travelers with flexible dates |
| Direct long-distance bus | 30-36+ hours | Rp 700,000-1,000,000 | One-ticket overland travelers |
| Multi-day boat via Moyo, Satonda and Komodo | 3-4 days (from Lombok) | Quoted by operators, often in US dollars | Flexible travelers who want the journey itself |
Flying: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo and other Flores airports
Carriers that have served Denpasar to Labuan Bajo include Wings Air, Batik Air, Citilink and Garuda Indonesia. Schedules rotate, so confirm who flies on your dates. One-way fares are typically Rp 900,000-2,000,000 and spike in July-August and around Christmas and New Year. As a rule of thumb, book three to four weeks ahead in dry season. Pick a morning departure if you can, since afternoon flights are more exposed to delays. Most hotels and the harbour are 10-15 minutes from the terminal. Our Komodo Airport arrival details cover the transfer.

Labuan Bajo is not the only gateway. Flores also has airports at Ende (ENE), Maumere (Frans Seda), Ruteng and Bajawa. Many Ende and Maumere connections route via Kupang rather than direct from Bali, so check current routings. An open-jaw plan works well if you have time. Fly into Ende or Maumere, travel overland west, then fly home from Labuan Bajo. You avoid backtracking, but you pay for a driver and need extra days. Maumere to Labuan Bajo alone is quoted at 7-10+ hours by road.
Ferry-hopping: how the Bali-Lombok-Sumbawa-Flores chain works
No single direct passenger ferry from Bali to Flores turned up in our research. Confirm that with the port operator, likely ASDP. Until then, treat the trip as a chain of separate legs. Times below are ranges from one operator page and need verification.

- Padang Bai to Lembar (Bali to Lombok): about 4-6 hours by public ferry.
- Lembar to Kayangan: about 2-3 hours by road across Lombok.
- Kayangan to Poto Tano (Lombok to Sumbawa): about 1.5-2 hours by ferry.
- Poto Tano to Sape: about 10-12 hours by road, usually with an overnight in Bima or Sape.
- Sape to Labuan Bajo: about 6-8 hours, typically one morning departure.
Is there a direct bus from Bali to Flores?
Yes, in a sense. Long-distance buses leave from Bali's Mengwi and Ubung area and run through to Labuan Bajo. Think of it as a bus that rolls onto the same ferries. Expect roughly 30-36 hours or more, depending on crossings. Indicative fares run about Rp 700,000-1,000,000 including the crossings. You sleep upright for two nights, so it suits travelers who value a single ticket over comfort. Bring snacks, small notes, a power bank and a spare day at the end.
Multi-day boat trips via Komodo

Backpacker boats sail from Lombok to Labuan Bajo over 3-4 days, passing Moyo and Satonda before finishing in Komodo National Park. Safety standards vary widely between operators. Ask about life jackets, radio or communications, cabin condition and crew experience before paying. Check park access rules with the Komodo National Park authority. Our Labuan Bajo boat tour guide covers day and overnight options once you arrive.
What it really costs: cheap routes vs flying
A ticket price is not the full cost. The ferry chain is billed leg by leg, while the bus is one through-fare, so the two ranges are not additive. Ferry-hopping at Rp 500,000-1,000,000 can undercut a Rp 900,000-2,000,000 flight on paper. Then add the extras, which we cannot price reliably:
- An overnight in Bima or Sape.
- Road transfers between legs, especially the long Sumbawa stretch.
- Meals over 2-3 days.
- The value of 2-3 days not spent in Flores.
When is the best time to make the crossing?

April to November is the calmer window for every route. Seas between Sumbawa and Flores are gentler, and road conditions on Flores improve. From December to March, expect rougher crossings, possible ferry suspensions and more flight delays. Peak fares hit in July-August and over the year-end holidays. For wet-season trips, fly, take the earliest departure and keep a buffer day before any Komodo trip. Our Labuan Bajo season guide has month-by-month detail.
Flores vs Bali: which island suits your trip?
Flores wins for Komodo diving, hiking and wildlife. Bali wins for surfing, family logistics and rainy-season predictability. Many travelers do both, so the choice is not exclusive. Our Labuan Bajo worth-it verdict helps if you are undecided.
A 7-day trip has room for a flight, but the 3-4 day backpacker boat leaves less time for Flores itself.
- Choose Bali if you want surf, easier family travel, or reliable transport from December to March.
- Choose Flores if you want Komodo diving, volcano and highland hikes, or dragons and wild buffalo.
- On a 7-day trip, Flores asks for more travel time but rewards you with wilderness.

Common mistakes to avoid
Most problems come from tight connections and from treating Flores as one small stop.
- Booking a same-day Komodo boat or return flight after an overland or ferry arrival. Keep a buffer day as editorial advice.
- Assuming the Sape-Labuan Bajo ferry is flexible, when it may be a single morning departure. Verify before planning.
- Treating Flores as only Labuan Bajo, when Maumere to Labuan Bajo alone is quoted at 7-10+ hours.
- Booking peak flights late in July-August or at year-end.
- Taking the budget ferry route from December to March without a weather buffer.
Arriving in Labuan Bajo: airport, harbour and first night
After a direct Denpasar flight of roughly 1 hour 5 minutes to 1 hour 20 minutes, Labuan Bajo is straightforward to reach but worth pacing carefully. Most hotels and the harbour are about 10โ15 minutes from Komodo Airport. Confirm your transfer with the hotel or driver before landing, especially when arriving late or during busy travel periods.
For a first night, stay in or near central Labuan Bajo if you are joining a Komodo trip. This keeps you close to the harbour and avoids an unnecessary early transfer. Do not schedule a boat departure on the same day as an overland or ferry arrival. The Sape-to-Labuan Bajo ferry is commonly quoted at 6โ8 hours and may have a limited morning departure. Keep a buffer day before a liveaboard, Komodo day trip, or return flight.
