Last updated November 2026: the best beaches in Flores are remote, boat-access stretches in and around Komodo National Park, plus Koka Beach on the eastern mainland. Pink Beach suits photographers and snorkellers, Padar suits early risers, and Koka suits overland travelers heading east. Flores is not Bali, so expect no beach clubs and little or no kiosk, shade, or shelter at the best sand.

Best Beaches in Flores at a Glance

Start with this quick-pick table. Kanawa Island sits about 30 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo, which makes it the easiest shore-snorkel stop. Values marked "check current" are not confirmed by our sources.

What to Expect from Flores Beaches

Flores beaches are remote and undeveloped. Most are reached by day-boat from Labuan Bajo, and nobody lives at most of them. Expect no chairs, no warungs, and no beach-club scene. Beaches in Labuan Bajo town are working-harbour shores and not a highlight, so skip them for swimming. Our town-level beach guide covers them in detail. For dragons and park logistics, see the Komodo Island guide.

Each entry below covers access, swim fit, timing, and a caution. Four sit in the Labuan Bajo and Komodo area, and one is on the eastern mainland.

Good to know

Koka sits between Ende and Maumere. One itinerary spent 7 days and 6 nights driving from Labuan Bajo to Ende.

  • 1. Pink Beach (Pantai Merah), Komodo
    • Red coral fragments mix with white sand, and the tint reads best from mid-morning to early afternoon.
    • Snorkelling is reported off the southern end, and the beach is reached by day-boat from Labuan Bajo.
    • Bring everything, since no kiosk, shade, or shelter is reported, and the sand looks ordinary before 9am or after 4pm.
  • 2. Padar Island viewpoint beaches
    • Three beaches in white, black, and pink-tinged sand spread out from one ridge.
    • The summit hike is about 1.6 miles (2.5 km) return and takes 30–45 minutes.
    • Go at sunrise before day-boats arrive around 9am, swim from the white sand on the north side, and check currents and tides first.
  • 3. Long Beach, Komodo
    • On the north side of Komodo Island, this white-sand beach is emptier than Pink Beach.
    • Day-boat itineraries commonly use it as a second stop for a swim and lunch break.
    • Facilities are unconfirmed, so pack water and food.
  • 4. Kanawa Island
    • Kanawa is about 30 minutes by boat from Labuan Bajo, with a fringing reef reachable from shore.
    • That makes it the gentlest option for shore snorkelling and short boat tolerance.
    • Its eco-resort was reported closed for redevelopment, so check current status before planning a meal or stay.
  • 5. Koka Beach, Sikka district
    • Koka is a cove with two beaches, set between Ende and Maumere.
    • Maumere is the closest airport, so fly in or plan a long overland drive from Labuan Bajo.
    • Mountain roads make Flores travel slower than the map suggests.

Pick by Traveler Type

Match the beach to what you actually want from the day. Use this list as a shortcut before you book a boat.

  • Photographers: Padar at sunrise, then Pink Beach from mid-morning.
  • Snorkellers: Kanawa Island for shore access, or the southern end of Pink Beach.
  • Families and non-swimmers: Kanawa Island, with calmer short transfers and no long boat day.
  • Short on time: one day-boat with Pink Beach and Long Beach.
  • Overland travelers: Koka Beach, flown into via Maumere.

How to Choose: Day Trip, Liveaboard, or Overland

Day-boats from Labuan Bajo commonly stop at Pink Beach and Long Beach. Padar before 9am usually points to a liveaboard or an early departure, so confirm timing with your operator. Compare formats on our boat tour options page. Shorter outings are covered in day trips from the harbour. East Flores needs far more time. One two-week itinerary spent 7 days and 6 nights driving from Labuan Bajo to Ende. Read the wider Flores island guide before adding Koka.

Best Time to Visit Flores Beaches

Dry season runs roughly April to October, with calmer seas and clearer water. June to August is peak season. Water stays about 26–30°C (79–86°F) all year, coolest from June to September. January and February can bring the calmest water and fewest visitors, though rain is unpredictable. Cross-check conditions on BMKG before you book. Our seasonal timing guide adds more detail. For light, aim for Padar at sunrise and Pink Beach in mid-morning.

Tip

Padar's summit hike takes 30–45 minutes. Pink Beach's sand looks ordinary before 9am or after 4pm.

Costs, Permits and Booking

Sponsored

We have no sourced fee figures, so check the official park authority site for current entry and permits. Compare shared tours, private charters, and liveaboards on what each includes.

  • Ask whether park entry and permit fees are included in the quoted price.
  • Check boat condition and safety gear before paying.
  • Read recent reviews rather than relying on harbour touts.
  • Confirm departure time, since it decides whether you reach Padar before day-boats.

Swim, Snorkel and Safety

Currents are real around the islands, and tides matter most at Padar. Ask your guide before swimming from Padar's white sand. Use reef-safe sunscreen and keep clear of coral. Follow rangers and guides at all times in Komodo National Park, since wildlife lives there. A 6-hour day-boat brings heavy sun, so bring water, a hat, and cover-up clothing. Start the 30–45 minute Padar hike early, before the heat builds.

Where to Stay and How to Get There

Base yourself in Labuan Bajo, which has the widest range of stays on Flores. Plan your route with routes into Labuan Bajo. Flying in? Check arrival airport details. Coming from Bali, compare flights and routes from Bali. For wider planning, start with Labuan Bajo activities.

Common Mistakes

Sponsored

Most errors come from treating Flores like Bali. Avoid these.

  • Expecting resort beaches, beach clubs, or beachfront hotels.
  • Reaching Pink Beach before 9am or after 4pm, when the sand looks plain white.
  • Skipping water, shade, and sunscreen on a 6-hour day-boat.
  • Booking the cheapest boat without checking safety gear.
  • Trying to cover Komodo and east Flores in too little time.
