Last updated November 2026: Lombok surf is a south-coast story built around Kuta, Gerupuk, Ekas and Selong Belanak, with Desert Point as an expert-only outlier to the west. Three things decide your trip: your skill level, the season, and whether a boat is needed to reach the break. Use this guide alongside our Lombok trip planner to match each break to your level before you book anything.

Lombok Surf at a Glance

Our shortlist is simple. Beginners should start at Selong Belanak or Gerupuk's Inside break. Intermediates can add Don-Don, Kids Point and Ekas Bay. Advanced surfers can look at Outside Right, Mawi and, with real reef experience, Desert Point. Gerupuk Bay alone holds five breaks, and all are within about 15 minutes by boat from the village, according to a Gerupuk surf camp's own guide. Conditions shift daily, so check a current forecast and ask a local guide before each session.

  • Good fit: beginners who want gentle sandy-bottom waves, intermediates who want variety, and advanced surfers chasing reef waves.
  • Poor fit: complete beginners aiming at Outside Left or Desert Point.
  • Poor fit: anyone unwilling to ride a scooter on rough roads or hire a boat.

Best Surf Spots in Lombok by Skill Level

Gerupuk Bay is the easiest place to build a plan, because one village gives access to breaks for every level. Kids Point is the only point break in the bay and, per the same camp guide, needs a swell of roughly 4–5 ft to start working. Many Gerupuk breaks work on mid-to-high tide, so tide timing matters as much as swell. Level ratings below come mostly from one camp's description and from a travel blog, so treat them as starting points rather than guarantees.

Best Time to Surf Lombok

Sources disagree on exact season boundaries, so read these as loose ranges. One Gerupuk camp puts the dry season at May to September and the wet season at October to April. A travel blog says May to October gives the most consistent waves. Water stays around 27–29°C all year, per the camp guide. Dry season brings bigger swell, but the same camp says trade winds often spoil waves from about 9 am. We'd surf early and use the afternoon for rest. Wet season swell is smaller but cleaner, and the camp says almost all breaks work then. Desert Point is described as a May-to-November wave. For official weather and monsoon data, check Indonesia's meteorological agency. Our guide to the best months for Lombok covers general travel timing. See also what to expect during the rainy season.

Good to know

Trade winds often spoil dry-season waves from 9 am, so the Day 2 Gerupuk Inside session in the sample plan needs an early start.

  • Dry season (about May to Sept/Oct): bigger swell, favour Don-Don, Inside and Outside Left, surf early.
  • Wet season (about Oct to Apr): smaller, cleaner waves, favour Outside Right and gentler days at Inside.

Lessons, Camps, or Going Independent?

Sponsored

Lessons suit beginners with a few days. A lesson normally covers a board, an instructor and basic safety. A camp adds accommodation, meals, transport and coaching, which helps if you want structure. Going independent costs less in coaching but needs board hire, boat hire and local knowledge. Our pick for a first trip is a short lesson block, then independent sessions once you can read the tide. We won't name schools, because we haven't verified which are operating today. Ask these before paying:

  • How many students share one instructor?
  • Which breaks will you surf, and who chooses?
  • Does the price include the boat to Gerupuk?
  • Are board and rash guard included?
  • What happens if the tide or swell is wrong?

Getting to the Breaks: Boats, Paddling, and Scooters

Many south-coast breaks are reachable only by boat, usually with a local guide or boat captain. Gerupuk's five breaks sit within about 15 minutes of the village. At Tanjung Aan, whoever rents you a board can boat you out, or you can paddle for roughly 15–20 minutes. We'd keep the paddle for strong swimmers. Mawi involves bumpy, unpaved roads by scooter, so it suits confident riders. Read our guide to renting a scooter before you commit. Wear a helmet and avoid riding tired after a long session. Always confirm whether the boat fee is included, because that is the usual surprise.

Getting to South Lombok and Where to Base Yourself

Direct flights reach Lombok International Airport from Bali's Ngurah Rai and from Jakarta, according to a travel blog. Check schedules on the airport's official site. Fast boats from Bali take roughly 1.5–2.5 hours, depending on ports. Public ferries run from Padang Bai to Lembar Harbour and take about 4–5 hours. Verify sailing details with the ferry operator. Our guide to reaching Lombok compares the options. Details on the Lombok Ferry Guide: Bali Ferry, Fast Boat & Gili Routes are separate. Kuta has the most restaurants, board and scooter rentals, and sits mid-coast. Gerupuk village puts you closest to its breaks, and one blogger called it a good base on the water. Grab and Gojek reportedly don't run in Kuta, so plan your own transport.

Costs and Budget Planning for a Lombok Surf Trip

We found no dated rupiah rates we could verify for lessons, boards or boat transfers. Check each school's current price list and confirm what the boat fee covers.

Safety, Etiquette, and Common Mistakes

Most problems here come from choosing a break above your level. Reef sits under almost every wave in this guide. Outside Right has flat reef and stone formations, Mawi has rocks in the lineup, and Desert Point has shallow reef and rip currents. Respect boat captains and surf guides, since they keep you safe and their fees support local people.

  • Skipping tide checks: many Gerupuk breaks need mid-to-high tide.
  • Arriving late and missing the early wind window.
  • Assuming the boat is included.
  • Targeting Outside Left or Desert Point as a beginner.
  • Riding a scooter on rough roads without experience.

Sample 3-Day Beginner Plan and Rest Days

Three days won't make you an expert, and we can't promise you'll stand on green waves. This plan builds fundamentals in a sensible order.

Tip

Kids Point needs a swell of roughly 4–5 ft to start working, so the Days 4–7 plan depends on the forecast as much as your skill.

  • Day 1: Selong Belanak for gentle waves and a lesson on the sandy bottom.
  • Day 2: Gerupuk Inside by boat, on an incoming tide, early.
  • Day 3: Tanjung Aan or Don-Don if the swell is small and a guide agrees.
  • Days 4–7: repeat Gerupuk, then try Kids Point only if you're comfortable on faster take-offs.

Rest Days Between Sessions

Sore shoulders need breaks. Browse our south-coast beaches guide for non-surf swimming. Plan Day Trips From Lombok: Gilis, Pink Beach, Waterfalls for a full day away. Two Sasak villages, Sade and Rambitan, sit inland from Kuta per one blog, so verify access first. Find quiet corners in our guide to lesser-visited Lombok spots, or book guided tours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Selong Belanak is described as ideal for beginners, with gentle waves, a sandy bottom and plenty of lessons. Gerupuk's Inside break is another beginner-friendly option, though it needs a boat.

Is Lombok better than Bali?

It depends on what you want. Sources describe Lombok's south coast as less crowded, but Bali has more services. Pick Lombok if you want variety of breaks and quieter beaches.

Can I learn surfing in 3 days?

You can learn the basics in three days with lessons. Expect to practice paddling and standing on small waves, and plan on more time before tackling reef breaks.
