Last updated November 2026: the best time to visit Lombok is the dry season, roughly May to September, and May, June and September give the best balance. Rough sea and heavy rain peak in different months, so your goal should pick the month. Start with our Lombok activities guide if you are still choosing what to do.

Quick Answer: Best Time to Visit Lombok

Plan for May to September if you want sun, low humidity and open trails. June and September are the safest all-round months. July and August are driest but busiest, and the Gili crossings can be rough on a southerly swell. December and January are the wettest months and the ones most travellers skip. Source ranges differ by a month or two at each end, so treat every boundary here as approximate. Still weighing the island itself? Read whether Lombok is worth visiting.

Lombok's Seasons at a Glance

Lombok has a dry season (about May to September) and a wet season (about November to March). April and October are changeover months with thinning or building showers. Published climate tables list daytime highs near 29°C (84°F) to 31°C (88°F) in most months. Those tables put August nights near 19°C (66°F) and June or July nights near 20°C (68°F). Check BMKG climate and forecast data before you commit, because competitor figures are unverified. Conditions also vary by area. Senggigi on the northwest coast, the Gilis, Kuta in the south and the Rinjani foothills can each behave differently on the same day. Treat any claim of a clear regional rain difference as unproven until BMKG confirms it.

Month-by-Month Guide

Use this table for relative patterns only. It carries no rain-day counts, because those are best taken from BMKG. Price tiers are general patterns, not quotes. Late April and late October are the least predictable weeks.

Pick your priority first, then your month. These are general patterns, so confirm against current conditions.

  • Surf: July and August, when the southerly swell runs. See Lombok surf spots.
  • Rinjani trek: June to September, subject to the park's current notice.
  • Gili snorkelling and diving: September and October for calm water. February is often too churned up.
  • Beaches and relaxing: May, June and September. Browse Lombok Beaches: Best Spots by Area (2026 Guide) to match a month to a coast.
  • Budget: May, or the wet months outside Christmas and New Year.
  • Waterfalls and green scenery: January to March, with grippy shoes for muddy paths.
  • Honeymoon: June or September for dry weather without the July-August peak.

Sea Conditions vs Rain: Planning Gili and Fast-Boat Crossings

Rain and rough water peak in different months. Rain peaks from December to January. Swell on the Gili crossings is reported to peak in July and August, and September to October is calmest. Verify this with a boat operator, because it comes from a competitor source. In heavy wet-season weather, fast boats between Bali, Lombok and the Gilis can be cancelled. Slower public ferries usually keep running. Read our Lombok ferry guide for crossing options. Check ASDP Indonesia Ferry for official ferry information. Keep one spare day before any international flight. Our Lombok airport guide covers arrival timing. For getting to the island at all, see How to Get to Lombok: Flights, Fast Boats & Ferry from Bali (2026).

Rinjani Trekking Season and Closures

Plan a Rinjani trek for June to September. One source says the national park closes the mountain from January 1 to March 31. Another says the reopening date moves each year. Do not book flights around either claim. Check the current notice from Taman Nasional Gunung Rinjani, the park authority, before you pay for a trek. Landslide and slippery-trail risk is the stated reason for the wet-season closure.

Festivals and Events That Can Shape Your Dates

Sponsored

Several events are date-variable, so check the current year's dates on Wonderful Indonesia or the NTB tourism office. Bau Nyale follows the lunar and Sasak calendar. Sources place Gendang Beleq around mid-April, the Senggigi Festival and a surf festival around July, and Peresean around November. Perang Topat at Pura Lingsar usually falls in November or December. Festival weeks fill hotels, so book early. For temple visits outside festival days, see Temples in Lombok: Where to Go, What to Wear and When.

Visiting in the Rainy Season

Wet-season rain is often a mix of bright mornings and short afternoon showers, though January and February can bring longer wet spells. The upsides are green rice terraces near Tetebatu, loud waterfalls and quieter beaches. The downsides are muddy waterfall and trailhead roads, reduced snorkelling visibility near river mouths and possible boat cancellations. Our Lombok rainy season guide goes deeper. For rainy afternoons, try a Lombok Massage Guide: Types, Prices & Where to Go, a Sasak village visit at Sade or a long lunch from the Lombok food guide. On wet roads, ride slowly or hire a driver. Christmas, New Year and Peak-Period Booking

Late December and early January are wet but busy, and popular hotels and flights can sell out earlier. July and August also need earlier booking. If your dates are fixed, follow this checklist.

Good to know

New Year week falls within a Rinjani closure that one source dates from January 1 to March 31.

  • Book refundable or flexible rooms where possible.
  • Put outdoor activities in the morning and keep afternoons open.
  • Allow a buffer day around boat crossings and flights.
  • Pick a covered terrace over a distant beach hut.
  • Hold a rainy-day plan, such as Day Trips From Lombok: Gilis, Pink Beach, Waterfalls.

Costs and Crowds by Season

Sponsored

July, August and the Christmas to New Year window carry the highest rates. May, June and September are the balanced months. The wet months outside the holidays are cheapest, and some resorts discount heavily. No published Rp rates are supplied here, so use this as an illustration, not a quote. A room quoted at about Rp 500,000 in May could plausibly sit near Rp 750,000 or more in August. Compare live quotes for your own dates. Crowds follow the same shape, and the south-coast beaches are emptiest in May.

What to Pack and How to Build Flexibility

Sponsored

Bring a thin poncho, quick-dry clothes, a waterproof dry bag and mosquito repellent for dusk. Do not rely on the weather app. It shows a chance of rain, not how long or how hard it falls, so a 60% icon often means one short shower. Check the hourly view, do outdoor plans early and keep afternoons loose. Pair a rain break with a meal from the 12 Best Restaurants in Lombok: Where to Eat by Area (2026).

Tip

Wet-season plans can survive a 60% icon on the app, since bright mornings often come before the afternoon showers.

Common Mistakes When Timing a Lombok Trip

Four timing errors come up repeatedly.

  • Assuming rough sea belongs only to the wet season, when swell peaks in July and August.
  • Booking a Rinjani trek without checking the park's current closure notice.
  • Booking July or August late and paying the peak-rate premium.
  • Packing tight connections around a boat or flight in December to February.

Honest Verdict: If You Can Only Pick One Month

Sponsored

Pick September if you can. It keeps dry weather, calms the sea and thins the crowds. June is the runner-up. January is the worst month on weather, but it still suits budget, green-scenery and waterfall travellers with flexible plans. Need more ideas for any month? Try our Lombok tours guide.

Frequently Asked Questions
