Last updated November 2026: here are the things to do in Kuta Lombok, a small surf town on Lombok's south coast. It is not Kuta Bali, and two to three days covers the core picks. Our short list is Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan, a Seger sunset, Benang Kelambu and the Secret Gilis, sorted by effort below.

8 Things to Do in Kuta Lombok, Sorted by Effort

Kuta town is compact, with surf shops and cafés along Jl. Raya Kuta. Most sights sit between 10 minutes and 3 hours away by road. We order the eight picks below roughly from nearest to farthest. Times and fees come from travel-writer reports, so verify them before you go.

  • 1. Surf lesson at Selong Belanak
    • Gentle waves and board rental on the beach make this our first stop for beginners.
    • Skip if you want a flat-water swim only. Choose Mawun instead.
  • 2. Beach day at Mawun or Tanjung Aan
    • Mawun has beach chairs, umbrellas and fresh coconuts. Tanjung Aan is quieter than Selong Belanak, with white sand and beach restaurants.
    • Skip if you need spotless sand. Some beaches here collect litter, especially in the wet season.
  • 3. Sunset at Pantai Seger and Bukit Merese
    • Seger has a parking fee reported at Rp 10,000 and a hill climb of about 10 minutes. Bukit Merese is an easy stop on the way back from Tanjung Aan.
    • Skip if you dislike hill steps. Sunsets here are good, though not on Uluwatu's level.
  • 4. Goa Bangkang Prabu bat caves
    • Entry is reported at about Rp 50,000, with a drive of about 10 minutes from Kuta. Visit near dusk, when bats leave the cave.
    • Skip if you dislike caves. Check the entry fee locally.
  • 5. Sasak villages: Sade and Rambitan
    • Sade offers weaving, traditional houses and guided walks. Accept a guide, pay them, and never enter a home uninvited.
    • Skip if you only want photos. These are living villages, not museums.
  • 6. Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu waterfalls
    • Reports put the drive at 1 to 3 hours, and about 50 km from Kuta. Tickets are reported at Rp 125,000 for four falls or Rp 90,000 for two.
    • Skip if your dates fall on a Sunday, when locals crowd the falls.
  • 7. Secret Gilis: Kedis, Nanggu and Sudak
    • A boat is reported at about Rp 350,000 per boat, after a drive of about 1.5 hours. Snorkeling is the main draw.
    • Skip if you get seasick or only have one spare day.
  • 8. Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile
    • Senaru is a long drive from Kuta, so treat this as a full day. The ticket is reported at Rp 20,000.
    • Skip if you have under three days. Benang Kelambu is nearer.

We split trips into four tiers: under 15 minutes, half day, full day, and multi-day. Fees are reported, not confirmed. Benang falls run Rp 90,000 to Rp 125,000, Tiu Kelep Rp 20,000, and the bat caves about Rp 50,000. Anything marked check locally lacked a verified figure.

Beaches and Sunsets Near Kuta

Selong Belanak, about 20 km west of Kuta, is our pick for families. Waves are gentle, and surf shacks serve lunch. Mawun suits swimmers who want fewer surfers. Pantai Tampah is reported as the cleanest, with parking at Rp 10,000 and no pushy sellers. Lancing sits beside it but is dirtier in the wet season. Kuta Beach itself is reported as plastic-strewn, so we treat it as a short walk, not a beach day. For beach-by-beach notes, see our beach-by-beach notes. Save Bukit Merese for late afternoon on the way back from Tanjung Aan.

Surf Kuta Lombok by Level

Choose your break by skill, not hype. Beginners belong at Selong Belanak, where water is waist-high and lessons are sold on the sand. Improvers can try Tanjung Aan, but its break is further out, so budget for a boat. Gerupuk is reported crowded and dirty. Advanced surfers go to Areguling, Ekas or Desert Point. Ekas needs a boat, reported at Rp 400,000, so split it with a group. Surf is reportedly better in the wet season because it is less windy. Our surf breaks by level guide goes deeper.

Good to know

Boats show up twice: Ekas at Rp 400,000 for advanced surfers, and the Secret Gilis at about Rp 350,000 per boat.

  • Beginner
    • Selong Belanak: gentle waves, shops and instructors on the beach.
  • Improver
    • Tanjung Aan: smaller but harder than Selong Belanak, and the break sits offshore.
  • Advanced
    • Areguling, Ekas and Desert Point: boats or long drives, and more risk. Avoid them if you are still learning.

Waterfalls and Inland Day Trips

Sponsored

Benang Kelambu and Benang Kelambu's twin neighbor Benang Stokel are the nearest big falls. Expect 1 to 3 hours each way, so start early and plan on 2 to 3 hours on site. Weekends fill with locals. Tiu Kelep and Sendang Gile sit near Senaru. Sendang Gile is a 10 to 15 minute walk down steps, and Tiu Kelep adds 20 to 30 minutes through jungle. Watch for guides asking about Rp 600,000, which is far above the Rp 20,000 ticket. Dress modestly at waterfalls out of respect for local religion. At Sade and Rambitan, pay your guide and ask before photographing homes.

Islands and Big Treks: Distance Caveats

Secret Gilis are the realistic island day from Kuta, at about 1.5 hours by road plus a boat. Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air are different. They lie 15 to 30 minutes west of Senggigi, near Bangsal in the northwest, so do not count them as near Kuta. Skip the horses there, which travel writers call unethical. Mount Rinjani starts about 2.5 hours away and takes 2 to 4 days. Its summit is reported at 3,726 m. Prices differ by operator, with 1-night crater rim trips reported at Rp 1.5 million to Rp 2.5 million, and 3-day treks from about Rp 3 million. Get several quotes. Treks are reported closed mid-November to April, so verify with the park authority. In the rainy months, Bukit Pergasingan is reported as a 2 to 3 hour climb. Our full day-trip guide compares all of these.

Tip

Mount Rinjani takes 2 to 4 days, so it sits in the multi-day tier of the at-a-glance table, not beside the full-day Secret Gilis.

Evenings in Kuta: Food, Market, Nightlife and Spa

Kuta's evenings are low-key. Start with dinner on Jl. Raya Kuta, then check our restaurant picks. A small night market is reported every couple of weeks, usually Saturdays from 5 PM to 10 PM, with limited parking. Confirm dates on Instagram first, and use our night market schedule for context. For drinks, see bars and nightlife. After a surf day, look at spa options or book one of the town's yoga classes.

Kuta Lombok Itineraries: 1 Day, 3 Days and a Rainy Day

Pace matters more than the checklist. Our one-day plan stays within a short ride. Our three-day plan adds one inland day and one boat day. Rinjani needs its own trip, so we leave it out. Wet-day options lean on viewpoints, yoga and cafés.

  • 1 day
    • Morning lesson at Selong Belanak, then lunch at a beach shack. Sunset at Seger, parking about Rp 10,000, then dinner in town. Skip the waterfalls.
  • 3 days
    • Day 1: the one-day plan. Day 2: Benang falls, leaving early for a 1 to 3 hour drive. Day 3: Secret Gilis, about 1.5 hours by road plus a boat of about Rp 350,000. Skip Tiu Kelep unless you add a fourth day.
  • Rainy day
    • Try yoga, a spa, or a cafe morning. Avoid the mud road to Semeti. If skies clear, visit the bat caves at dusk, about 10 minutes away.

How to Get Around and Where to Stay

Scooters are the default, with small bikes reported at Rp 75,000 to Rp 80,000 per day. Check the licence plate, a helmet that fits, and what insurance covers. Roads to Semeti are rough and turn to mud in rain. A private driver suits day trips, such as the Rp 1,000,000 reported for a Senaru run. Competitors disagree on whether Grab or Gojek reach Kuta, so verify locally. Visa on arrival is reported at Rp 500,000 for 30 days. Confirm rules on Wonderful Indonesia's official tourism site. Mandalika Circuit hosts motorsport near Kuta, so check Mandalika Circuit's official site for event dates before booking. See where to base yourself for stays.

Best Time to Visit Kuta Lombok

Sponsored

Dry season runs April to October, and the rainy season November to March. Late dry season turns the landscape brown. May, June and September are reported as greener, while July and August are high season. Rain brings better surf and fewer crowds, but muddy roads. Rinjani treks are reported closed from mid-November to April. Check month-by-month weather before you lock dates.

Mistakes to Avoid and What to Skip

Most errors come from distance and money. Here are the ones we'd avoid first.

  • Treating the Gilis as nearby
    • Gili Trawangan, Meno and Air sit near Bangsal, not Kuta.
  • Overpaying for guides
    • Tiu Kelep's ticket is reported at Rp 20,000. Guides asking Rp 600,000 are a scam warning.
  • Booking Rinjani blind
    • Get several quotes and verify the mid-November to April closure.
  • Expecting a perfect Kuta Beach
    • Plastic litter is reported. Walk it at sunrise, then move on.

Near Kuta, the draws are Selong Belanak, Tanjung Aan and Seger sunsets. Inland, Benang Kelambu and Tiu Kelep are the big waterfalls. Mount Rinjani and the Gili islands sit much farther away.
