How to Choose a Kuta Lombok Beach by Traveler Type

Start with what you want to do in the water, then pick the direction. East of town suits short hops and sunsets. West and south suit full-day rides with longer, partly unpaved roads. If you are still weighing the trip, read whether Kuta suits your trip first. For land-based plans, browse other things to do around Kuta.
- Swimmers: Mawun and Tanjung Aan, both described as calm in our sources.
- Beginner surfers: Selong Belanak, where instructors and board rentals are reported.
- Families: Mawun and the main stretch of Selong Belanak, based on calmer water reports.
- Sunset chasers: Bukit Merese, with a short uphill walk.
- Photographers: Semeti's rock formations at low tide, with swimming ruled out.

East of Kuta: Seger, Tanjung Aan and Bukit Merese Route
Kuta Beach sits in town. Its promenade was reportedly renovated, shade is limited, and young vendors work the sand. Seger Beach is about 10 minutes away by scooter and has beachside warungs. Seger Point lies over the headland, and parking is reported at 5,000 IDR. Tanjung Aan comes roughly 2 minutes further east, with a long row of warungs and loungers. Bukit Merese follows another 5 to 10 minutes on. Parking is reported at 5,000 IDR, and the walk up takes around 5 minutes. Gerupuk is about 9 km east of Kuta. Surf boats there are reported at 50,000 IDR per person, and board rental at 50,000 IDR. One source says Gerupuk is not really worth it for a beach day, and we agree. Go for the break, and see our notes on surf breaks near Kuta.

- Seger Beach: swimming and warungs, about 10 minutes by scooter.
- Seger Point: surf break over the headland, parking reportedly 5,000 IDR.
- Tanjung Aan: white sand, warungs and loungers.
- Bukit Merese: sunset viewpoint, parking reportedly 5,000 IDR.
- Gerupuk: surf boats, skip it as a beach day.
South and West of Kuta: Mawun, Selong Belanak and Tampah
Mawun is reportedly about 15 minutes from Kuta. Waves are small and the sand is described as clean. Early mornings are quietest, and a few young vendors work the beach. Mawun village holds a small market on Tuesdays, according to one source. Selong Belanak lies about 20 km out. Surf instructors and board rentals work the beach, and water buffalo sometimes wander past. Sunbeds are reported at 50,000 IDR per person. Walk to the far end of the bay for a quieter stretch. Mawi is a surf beach, and one source says its road is unpaved. Ride it only if you are confident, or hire a driver. Areguling is a long, quiet beach with warungs. Tampah and Lancing share one long bay, with loungers reported at 20,000 IDR per person. Pack a snorkel kit, because corals are reportedly visible at low tide.

- Mawun: calm, small waves, early mornings quietest.
- Selong Belanak: beginner surf, sunbeds, warungs, about 20 km from Kuta.
- Mawi: surf beach, unpaved approach reported.
- Areguling: long sandy beach with warungs.
- Tampah / Lancing: quiet, loungers about 20,000 IDR per person.
Quiet and Remote Beaches, Plus a Pink Beach Verdict

Pantai Bilasayak and Teluk Ujung sit inside an environmental park. Entry is reported at 100,000 IDR per person, and the trip is about 1 hour from Kuta. Dirt roads lead to deserted sand, and Bilasayak is swimmable at high tide. Telawas has coves, blowholes and cliff jumps. Semeti is a short walk from Telawas, and our sources disagree on swimming there. One reports a body surf, and another warns of currents and a rocky base. We'd treat Semeti as a look-and-photograph stop. Nambung is about 17 km away on a road that loops north then south. Its Batu Bereng "waterfall beach" works only at low tide. Pink Beach (Tangsi) is paved, with entry reported at 7,500 IDR per person plus 10,000 IDR per car. Sources conflict on its color, and one says it is not as pink as it used to be. Skip it if you expect vivid pink. Our sources give no distance from Kuta, so check a map. For farther options, see longer day trips.

Getting Around: Scooter vs Driver vs Tour
Scooter rental is reported at 50,000 to 80,000 IDR per day, since sources conflict. Private drivers are reported at 300,000 to 450,000 IDR for a day. A driver pays off for three or more beaches, unpaved roads like Mawi's, or a group. Lombok airport to Kuta is reportedly a 45-minute drive. Full-day group tours reportedly include hotel pickup, lunch and admission to five beaches, but our sources give no price. Rent surfboards in town, because the beaches do not offer rentals. Carry small cash notes for parking and warungs. Check Mandalika Circuit event dates before big race weekends, since traffic around Kuta may change. Sort out a base using choosing a base in Kuta.

Lombok airport to Kuta is reportedly a 45-minute drive. Add that to the ride out to Selong Belanak, about 20 km away, before a full west-side day.

- Scooter: about 50,000 to 80,000 IDR per day, reported.
- Private driver: about 300,000 to 450,000 IDR per day, reported.
- Group tour: price not supplied, so check the operator.
When to Go: Season, Tide and Time of Day
Sources put the dry season at April to October. Confirm current patterns on our Kuta's seasonal weather patterns page. Tide matters more than month at some beaches. Batu Bereng works at low tide only. Semeti's rocks are best viewed at low tide. Tampah snorkeling is reportedly better when the tide is low. Bilasayak is a reported high-tide swim. Mawun is quietest in the early morning. Reach Bukit Merese before dusk, since the climb takes about 5 minutes and you want time to choose a headland. Check a BMKG tide table before any remote trip. For broader national planning, Wonderful Indonesia is a sensible starting point.

Safety, Etiquette and Leave-No-Trace
Treat surf-break beaches as places to surf, not swim. That covers Seger Point, Gerupuk and Mawi. Avoid swimming at Semeti. Bring water and sun protection, since shade is limited at some beaches. Warungs are often cash-only, so carry notes for 5,000 IDR parking too. Decline vendors with a polite smile and a clear no. Dress modestly when leaving the sand. Take litter back out, and do not touch coral at snorkeling spots. Plan an after-beach meal using restaurants for a post-beach meal.
Sample Day Plans (Estimated Timings)
Timings below are our estimates, not measured schedules. Adjust for traffic, tides and your riding comfort.
Starting the 4-hour east loop at Seger Beach keeps things short, since Seger is reportedly a 10-minute scooter ride from Kuta town.
- 4-hour east loop: Seger Beach for a swim, Tanjung Aan for a warung stop, then Bukit Merese before sunset.
- Full day south and west: Mawun early, Selong Belanak midday, then Tampah or Lancing in the afternoon. A driver helps here.
- Sunset-focused: relax in town, ride east to Bukit Merese before dusk, then browse the evening night market.
