Last updated November 2026: the best day trips from Kuta Lombok are a west-coast beach loop, an east-coast sunset run, a Gerupuk surf morning and a waterfall day. This guide covers Kuta in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, not Kuta in Bali. Use it with our Kuta Lombok hub guide to decide which runs fit your days.

Day trips from Kuta Lombok at a glance

Most trips here are beaches and surf spots within 15 to 40 minutes. Real full-day outings are the Gerupuk boat, the waterfalls and Mawi. Desert Point works best as an overnight. Times below come from 2025 traveler reports, so confirm them locally before you commit a day.

How getting around works without public transport

Lombok has no public transport network that serves these trips. Grab and Gojek were reported not to operate on the island, so do not plan around them. Confirm that on arrival. Scooters were reported from Rp50,000 per day in 2025. A private driver or a tour is the alternative if you do not ride.

Ride a scooter only if you hold a valid license and have insurance that covers it. Avoid riding home in the dark. Mawi's rough road is the worst place to learn. Our Kuta Lombok stay guide helps you pick a base that makes early starts easy.

West coast beach day: Selong Belanak, Mawun, Areguling and Mawi

Head west for the easiest full beach day. Selong Belanak is about 30 minutes out and is a large bay with surf shacks, board rental, lessons and warungs. Mawun is about 20 minutes out and has very blue water. Reports also flag litter there, so skip it if clean sand matters most. Areguling is quieter, reached by a gravel road, and pairs well with both. Our Kuta Lombok beaches guide covers each bay in more detail.

Mawi sits about 40 minutes west. Reports say the last 20 minutes are on very rough road. Facilities are limited and the reef is exposed at low tide, so check tides first. Semeti Beach is the next bay and is walkable. Skip Mawi if you have only a day or two.

  • Sample loop: Selong Belanak, then Mawun, then Areguling.
  • Add Mawi only with a full day, tide times and a confident rider.
  • Pay roughly Rp10,000 for beach access at some beaches, per 2025 reports.

East coast half-day: Tanjung Aan, Merese Hill and Seger

East of town, Tanjung Aan is about 20 minutes by scooter on good roads. It is popular, so arrive early for space on the sand. Merese Hill sits alongside and works as a sunset viewpoint. Seger Beach is about 15 minutes from Kuta and is another sunset spot. Swimming is not possible there at low tide.

Development has been reported near Tanjung Aan, so check current access before you go. Kuta Beach itself is the busiest option, so skip it if you want space.

  • Sample loop: Tanjung Aan in the afternoon, then Merese Hill.
  • Finish at Seger for sunset, then ride back before full dark.

Surf day trips: Selong Belanak, Gerupuk and Desert Point

Beginners should start at Selong Belanak, where board rental and lessons sit right on the sand. Gerupuk is about 40 minutes east. Surf spots there include Don-Don, Inside Gerupuk, Outside Gerupuk and Kids Point. You need a boat, and 2025 reports put it near Rp150,000 per boat. Split that with other surfers.

Desert Point is about 2 hours west and suits advanced surfers only. Reports suggest staying one or two nights. Non-surfers should skip it. Our Kuta Lombok surf guide has the full break-by-break detail.

  • Sample day: Gerupuk boat surf in the morning.
  • Then spend a quiet afternoon at Tanjung Aan.

Waterfall day: Benang Stokel and Benang Kelambu

Central Lombok's waterfalls are the best non-beach day out. Reports put the ride from Kuta at about 1.5 hours each way through rice fields. Verify that with your driver. From the entrance, the first fall at Benang Stokel is a 15-minute walk. Benang Kelambu is about 5 minutes by scooter from Stokel.

There is a jump spot of about 11 m, and the water depth changes over time. Check it locally before anyone jumps. A sign quoted Rp35,000 per person in 2025, while a guided visit cost Rp90,000. Wear trainers if you can, as sandals are only manageable.

Airport, Mandalika, Sade and bigger trips to plan separately

Lombok International Airport at Praya was reported as a 20-minute taxi ride from Kuta, around Rp150,000. Mandalika Circuit sits in the same area, and event dates change, so check the official Mandalika site before planning around a race weekend. Sade, the Sasak village, fits a loop on the way to or from Praya. Confirm opening times and any donation expected on arrival.

Mount Rinjani is a multi-day trek, not a day trip. Reports describe a 2-day climb with a guide, and the summit trail closing from January to March. The Gili Islands are reported as possible by day tour, but no verified times from Kuta exist. Check Wonderful Indonesia and your operator before you commit.

Which day trip fits you

Match the trip to your time, skill and transport. Short stays suit the half-day beaches. Tour or driver options suit non-riders for the waterfalls.

Tip

Waterfall entry was Rp35,000 posted and Rp90,000 with a guide. Non-riders may want to budget the higher figure.

Costs to budget for

Sponsored

Budget by component, then check current prices. Scooter rental started at Rp50,000 per day in 2025 reports, with about Rp10,000 for fuel. Beach entry and parking were about Rp10,000. Add Rp150,000 for a Gerupuk boat, split by group. Waterfall entry was Rp35,000 posted and Rp90,000 with a guide. Driver and tour prices are not verified here, so ask for quotes the day before. Plan about 3 to 5 days in Kuta to fit several of these. See our Kuta Lombok restaurant picks for dinner afterward.

Timing, tides and returning before dark

Check tides before Seger, Mawi and Gerupuk, since low tide limits swimming and exposes reef. For seasons and rain, read our Kuta Lombok weather guide. Leave by mid-afternoon on west-coast days. Ask locally about road closures or rough sections before you set off. If a road looks bad, turn back to Selong Belanak. Evening recovery options include the Kuta Lombok Night Market: Dates, Location & What to Expect, a massage at a Kuta Lombok Spa: Massage & Facial Prices, Where to Book, or drinks in Kuta's nightlife. Before booking a longer stay, read whether Kuta Lombok is worth visiting. Check official government advisories for current safety information.

Good to know

Mawi sits about 40 minutes west. Starting there after midday leaves little room before dark.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from timing and transport assumptions.

  • Assuming Grab or Gojek will get you home.
  • Starting Mawi or Benang Stokel after midday.
  • Missing tides at Seger or Mawi.
  • Riding rough roads without a license or insurance.
  • Carrying too little cash for beach, parking and waterfall fees.
  • Treating Rinjani or the Gili Islands as an easy same-day add-on.
