Last updated November 2026: Kuta Lombok surf works best when you treat the town as a base for the south coast. The bay has its own right and left, but the better-known waves sit a scooter ride, a drive, or a boat trip away. We match each spot to a skill level below, with travel times, costs, and safety notes. For the wider picture, see our Kuta Lombok planning guide.
Kuta Lombok Surf at a Glance: Spots by Level
Our short answer: beginners head to Selong Belanak or Tanjung Aan, improvers add Gerupuk, and experienced surfers go to Areguling, Mawi, Ekas, or Desert Point. Distances below come from competitor reports that conflict in places, so treat them as ranges and confirm locally. Selong Belanak is the clearest case, with one source saying about 25 minutes west and another about 45 minutes. We would plan for the longer figure on a scooter and be pleasantly surprised if it is shorter.

| Spot | Level | From Kuta | Access constraint | Check first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kuta Bay | Beginner to improver | In town | Right at the east end, mushier left to the west, both into channels | Crowds and tide |
| Tanjung Aan | Improver | About 10-20 min by road | Parking about 10,000 IDR per scooter; facilities changed after 2025 development | Current beach access |
| Selong Belanak | Beginner | About 25-45 min west (sources conflict) | Two entrances; paid parking about 10,000 IDR per scooter | Litter and water quality |
| Gerupuk | Beginner to advanced | About 25 min | Boat access to a cliff-lined bay | Operator safety practice |
| Areguling | Intermediate to advanced | About 10 min west | Dusty track; ground clearance helps | Reef and coral at low tide |
| Mawi | Intermediate to advanced | About 45 min west | Rough track; about 10,000 IDR per scooter entry; no board rental | Currents, tide, shade |
| Ekas (Inside/Outside) | Intermediate (Inside); advanced (Outside) | About 1.5 hours | Usually a boat from the harbor | Boat price and swell size |
| Desert Point | Expert only | About 2 hours west | Long transfer; stay nearby | Swell size and your honest level |
Best Surf Spots Near Kuta Lombok
Each spot below gets a plain choose-or-skip line. Competitor descriptions of Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk differ on difficulty, so we lean on the more cautious reading for newcomers.

- Beginner, Selong Belanak: choose it for a sand-bottom beach break with forgiving whitewater. Skip it if litter or a long ride bothers you, since one traveler reported garbage at a side entrance.
- Beginner to improver, Kuta Bay: choose it when you want to surf without a transfer. Skip it on days when the channels look busy with other learners.
- Improver, Tanjung Aan: choose it for a slow A-frame in the center of the bay. Skip it for your first-ever session, because it is not total beginner water. Check beach facilities first, as one source reports warungs were demolished in 2025.
- Beginner to advanced, Gerupuk: choose it for a boat-access bay with options for several levels. Skip operators that cram in beginners or skip safety briefings.
- Intermediate to advanced, Areguling: choose it for a consistent reef with a long right. Skip it if you cannot handle a dusty track or shallow coral.
- Intermediate to advanced, Mawi: choose it for a heavier A-frame reef, best on smaller swell and higher tides for the less experienced. Skip it if you need rental boards or shade.
- Intermediate and advanced, Ekas: choose Inside Ekas for a mellow left and Outside Ekas for a steeper wedge. Skip it as a casual half-day, since it is about 1.5 hours away.
- Expert, Desert Point: choose it only if you already surf heavy, hollow reef. Skip it for progression sessions.
Best Time to Surf Kuta Lombok
Sources disagree, and we think that is honest. One camp article puts the dry season, May to September, as the best learning window, with smaller swell but more wind. It puts the wet season, November to March, as the time for larger swell and advanced surfers. Another source calls the seasons a bit iffy. If you are arriving this month, expect the wet-season pattern, so beginners should favor Selong Belanak and keep sessions short. Check a forecast the day before and again that morning, looking at swell height, swell period, wind, and tide. Live numbers change hourly, so we do not quote them. Our Kuta Lombok weather guide covers rain and temperature for the rest of your trip.
Surf Lessons, Camps, and Board Rental: What They Cost
One Kuta school publishes its rates, which we use only as an illustration. Confirm current prices before booking. Its lessons include gear, a 2-hour session, and a boat transfer where needed. Compare any quote on what it covers: boat, transport, boards, session length, and group size. Camps bundle more. One Kuta camp lists €739 for 5 nights and €879 for 7 nights. A Gerupuk camp lists €1290 for two weeks. Meals, yoga, video analysis, and transfers vary widely between camps, so compare inclusions rather than headline prices. A camp saves planning effort. Lessons plus a hotel leave more time for beaches, and Where to Stay in Kuta Lombok: 5 Best Areas covers that choice. We do not endorse any school or camp.

Ekas day trip costs IDR 1.5 million, and the driver ride alone is about 1.5 hours each way, so block out the whole day.
- Single session: IDR 550k per person
- 2-4 sessions: IDR 500k each
- 5 or more sessions: IDR 485k each
- Private session: IDR 750k
- Ekas day trip with two sessions and a beach BBQ: IDR 1.5 million
- Longboard rental, 9'0 to 9'4: IDR 120k per day
Getting to the Breaks: Scooter, Driver, or Boat
Scooters suit Tanjung Aan, Areguling, and Mawi if you ride confidently. Areguling's dusty track and Mawi's rough one are poor places to learn. Entry or parking runs about 10,000 IDR per scooter at Tanjung Aan, Selong Belanak, and Mawi. Mawi has no board rental, so surfers strap their own boards to the scooter. Hire a driver for Ekas at about 1.5 hours each way, and for Desert Point at about 2 hours. At Gerupuk and Ekas, a boat covers the final leg. Carry water, sun protection, and cash, since Mawi has little shade and its nearest warung is back by the main road. Arriving at Lombok International Airport (LOP)? Safety, Etiquette, and Mistakes to Avoid
Reefs here are shallow and not always visible. Mawi has strong currents. Areguling shelves quickly and has spiky coral. Gerupuk is crowded, and one traveler reported operators who ignore beginner safety, so ask about group size and who supervises. Hold your board in busy beginner zones and give priority to the surfer closest to the peak. Pack rubbish out, because waste handling is a known problem on this coast. Check that your travel insurance covers surfing. Afterward, post-surf meals in Kuta are an easy reward, and a massage at a Kuta Lombok Spa: Massage & Facial Prices, Where to Book helps sore shoulders.
- Booking the cheapest boat session without asking about group size
- Taking a first-timer to Mawi or Areguling
- Riding a scooter down dusty tracks without experience
- Relying on a single forecast check
- Expecting board rental at Mawi
- Assuming Tanjung Aan facilities are unchanged since 2025
A Simple 3-Day Plan for Beginners
Our plan builds from calm water to a boat trip, keeping each day to one surf session. Evenings can be easy: the Kuta Lombok Night Market: Dates, Location & What to Expect suits day one, and Kuta Lombok Nightlife: Bars, Live Music & Getting Home suits day three. Day 1 at Selong Belanak adds about 10,000 IDR per scooter in entry or parking, on top of the lesson fee.
- Day 1: a 2-hour lesson at Selong Belanak, working on paddling and pop-ups.
- Day 2: a second lesson at Tanjung Aan or Kuta Bay, then rest.
- Day 3: a boat session at Gerupuk with a small-group operator, or a second Selong Belanak day if the swell is large.
More Kuta Lombok Surf FAQs
Can complete beginners surf near Kuta? Yes. Selong Belanak is the clearest beginner choice because it has a sand-bottom beach break. A first lesson is typically a 2-hour session with gear included, based on the published school example in this guide.

Do I need a scooter? No. A driver is a better option for Ekas, around 1.5 hours from Kuta, or Desert Point, about 2 hours west. Gerupuk and Ekas also require a boat for the final approach.
Can I rent a board at every break? No. Mawi has no board rental on the beach, so bring your own board if you ride there. The published rental example is IDR 120k per day for a 9'0 to 9'4 longboard.
Is Gerupuk suitable for first-timers? It can be, but only with a careful operator. Ask who supervises the group, how many learners share an instructor, and whether the boat transfer is included.
