Couples should lean on sunset, massage and snorkelling. Families will get the most from cycling, beach time and a boat hop. Budget travelers can fill a day with a rented bike, a mask and a west-coast sunset. Prices here are approximate, taken from 2025 traveler reports, so re-check before you pay. Our time estimates are editorial rules of thumb, not measured figures.

  • Cycle the island loop
    • Flat ground makes cycling the default, and crossing the island takes about 10 minutes by bike.
    • Hire ran near Rp 50,000 per day in a 2025 traveler report, so confirm locally and ask for a lock.
  • Snorkel with turtles on the north-east and east coast
    • Gear-hire stands line the road beside the east-coast beach, and turtles are common on the north-east side.
    • Keep your distance and never touch them. For waves rather than reef, see our notes on water-sport conditions.
  • Watch sunset on the west coast
    • Beach bars on the north and west coasts face the sunset, and some run happy-hour offers.
    • One venue-led guide dates from 2019, so check current deals in our evening bars guide.

  • Swim at the west-coast beaches
  • Eat at warungs and beach restaurants
    • One older report found local warungs in the island's Centre cheaper than beachfront places serving western food.

    • Choices range from beachside beds to small spas on side streets. See massage and spa options.
  • Join a yoga session
    • Several studios operate, and one reported a sunrise class at 7 a.m.

    • Sunrise and sunset slots need advance booking.
    • Read the welfare note in the responsible-travel section first.
  • Dive or take a course
    • Dive sites around the Gilis reportedly offer turtles, and reef sharks on some sites.
    • Non-certified visitors can take a course. Choose an operator on current reviews, not on this list.

How To Plan Your Time in Gili Air

Gili Air is small, so a short stay covers the main sights. To decide how many days suit you, read our take on whether the island suits you. Here is a loop that follows the sun. Start at the harbour and east-coast strip, where boats land and gear stands sit. Allow about 60 to 90 minutes for hire and a first swim. Ride to the quieter north next for snorkelling and turtles on the north-east side. Budget roughly 90 minutes there. Reach Sunset Point on the west by late afternoon and stay for the light. Finish with the south shore as a 30 to 45 minute lighter stop. One day: snorkel in the morning, eat at a warung in the Centre, then watch sunset on the west. Two days: add a pre-booked massage and a yoga class or padel game. Three days: spend a half day on the Trawangan and Meno boats, then keep the last evening free for the night market.

Tip

A bike ride across the island is about 10 minutes, so the day's stops are the real time cost.

Bike hire ran about Rp 50,000 per day in a 2025 traveler report. Horse riding was quoted near Rp 450,000 for 1 hour. Public boats to Trawangan were reported at Rp 13,000 to Rp 40,000 for about 25 minutes. Fast boats take around 15 minutes by some operators and fill at early-morning and late-afternoon departures. An island-hopping boat reportedly runs twice daily, weather permitting. Treat every figure as approximate, because operators change prices. Book ahead for sunrise or sunset horse rides, fast boats and well-rated massage slots. One competitor puts the dry season at May to October. Confirm timing against climate data from Indonesia's weather agency. Our month-by-month weather page goes deeper.

Where To Stay And How To Get Around

Sponsored

You walk, cycle or take a cidomo horse cart on Gili Air. Crossing the island by bike takes about 10 minutes. Beach roads can be sandy, so expect to push for short stretches. One older guide recommends a fat-tyre bike and a lock. For quieter sleep, we'd pick the north or a lane off the beach path. Beach bars on the sunset side can play music late. Livelier evenings suit the beachfront stretch. Skip booking any room until you decide which of those two you want.

Getting To Gili Air

Gili Air sits off Lombok, about an hour by boat from Bali according to one traveler guide. Fast boats leave Padang Bai in Bali, and speedboats serve Lombok's Bangsal port. Start with our guide to getting to Gili Air. Bali departures are covered in the Bali crossing, and schedules sit in fast boat and public boat details. For general trip planning, see Wonderful Indonesia.

Good to know

By one traveler guide, Bali sits about an hour by boat away, while the hop to Trawangan takes about 25 minutes.

Mistakes To Avoid

Most trip regrets here are small and avoidable.

  • Riding through soft sand
    • Sandy beach roads force you to push your bike. Stay on firmer inland lanes where you can.
  • Leaving bikes unlocked
    • Lock the bike whenever you leave it, even briefly.
  • Booking late
    • Horse rides, fast boats and well-rated massages sell out. Reserve these first.
  • Sleeping beside the loudest bars
    • Beach bars can play loud music late. Choose your lodging zone on purpose.
  • Touching turtles
    • Turtles are used to people, but give them space anyway.

Responsible Travel: Turtles, Horses And Waste

Sponsored

One travel writer urges visitors to avoid horse carts, citing poor treatment of horses. That is one author's view, so check current welfare guidance from the Gili Eco Trust before riding. Keep your distance from turtles while snorkelling. Older reports mention refill stations at hostels and restaurants and weekly beach clean-ups. Ask locally which are running now.

Rainy-Day And Slow-Hour Options

When showers hit, book a massage, join a yoga class or play padel if the court is open. Cafés and boutiques fill the gaps between downpours. After dark, wander the evening market for food and bracelets.
