Last updated November 2026: the Gili Air ferry from Bali is usually a fast boat, and the crossing takes roughly 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the departure port. From Lombok, the public boat from Bangsal is the short, cheap hop. Use the port table below, then confirm fares and times with the operator before you pay.

Gili Air Ferry at a Glance

Fast boats from Padang Bai reach Gili Air in about 1h45 to 2h. From Serangan, expect 2h50 to 3h30. Public boats from Bangsal on Lombok take roughly 25 to 45 minutes, and sources disagree on the exact figure. Every fare and time below comes from operator and booking listings that we have not verified. Treat them as planning ranges and check current fares before you commit.

Pick the port by where you sleep, then by your next move. Padang Bai suits Ubud, Sidemen and Candidasa. It has the shortest time at sea and the most departures. One operator listing shows a 09:00 departure arriving at 11:10. Serangan sits closest to the airport, about 20 to 30 minutes away by car. Sanur works for Kuta, Legian and Seminyak stays. Nusa Dua fits Tanjung Benoa, Jimbaran and Uluwatu. Operators named across the listings include Eka Jaya, Blue Water Express, Gili Getaway, Gili Gili, Golden Queen and Semaya One. Amed is the odd one out. One source lists a single boat there, while another says the harbor is closed. Confirm it runs before you plan around it. For deeper routing from each Bali base, see our Bali-side route breakdown. Think in total journey cost. A cheap Padang Bai ticket can be offset by a taxi of 90 minutes or more to Kuta, Seminyak or the airport.

Gili Air to Bali: Ports, Timing, and Airport Connections

Leaving Gili Air is the riskiest direction, because a missed boat can mean a missed flight. Most departures leave between 08:15 and 11:30, with limited afternoon sailings. Arrive at Padang Bai if you are heading to Ubud, Candidasa or east Bali. Choose Serangan if a flight out of Denpasar comes next. Work backwards from the flight with these steps. A buffer night in Bali before any international flight is the safer call. Same-day connections are possible, but nothing here is a guarantee. One source calls flights departing 17:00 or later the safest bet for a same-day crossing. More ways to link the island with the mainland are in our wider route options.

Tip

Serangan's 20 to 30 minute drive is a separate step, so count it on top of the 2 to 2.5 hours for airport arrival.

  • Start with your flight time and subtract 2 to 2.5 hours for airport arrival.
  • Subtract the Serangan-to-airport drive, about 20 to 30 minutes.
  • Subtract the crossing, about 2h50 to Serangan.
  • Add buffer for delays, then pick the boat that leaves before that deadline.

Public Boat vs Fast Boat: Cost, Time, and Comfort Trade-Offs

The public route from Bali is cheap but eats most of a day. Reported total time is 8 to 10 hours, against about 90 to 120 minutes on a direct fast boat from Padang Bai. The chain has three legs. First, a public ferry runs from Padang Bai to Lembar from about Rp 65,000. It operates around the clock, roughly every 90 minutes. Second, a transfer from Lembar to Bangsal costs Rp 50,000 to Rp 150,000. Third, the slow boat from Bangsal takes 30 to 45 minutes. One listing gives departures at 11:00 for Rp 20,000 and 16:00 for Rp 25,000. These are unverified, so confirm them locally. This route suits tight budgets with time to spare. It also serves as weather backup, since one source says it often keeps running when fast boats are cancelled. Verify that on the day.

Tickets, Port Taxes, and When to Book

Padang Bai fast boat fares from one listing run from Rp 305,000 to Rp 664,000 per person, depending on operator. Semaya One was the lowest and Blue Water Express the highest in that listing. Seats sell out in July, August and over Christmas and New Year. One competitor advises booking at least three weeks ahead for peak months. Most operators reportedly do not include port taxes in the ticket. One source names Eka Jaya as the exception. You pay the tax at the harbor, so carry small cash. Always ask what your fare includes before paying. Booking both directions at once is reportedly sometimes slightly cheaper than two one-way tickets. Cheapest operators may trade punctuality for price, so skip them when a flight depends on the crossing.

Getting from Lombok and Between the Gilis

Most Lombok departures leave from Bangsal Harbor in the north. Expect ticket counters, several quoted prices and the occasional tout. Compare the posted fare before you pay. Hops between islands are short. Gili Air to Gili Meno takes about 5 minutes, to Gili Trawangan about 10 minutes, and to Teluk Nare about 5 minutes. One booking site lists these times, so confirm them locally. For ideas on using those hops, see these island-hopping day trips. Gili Air has no motorized vehicles. At low tide you may step off into shallow water, so wear sandals and shield electronics from spray. Once ashore, arrival-day plans cover what to do first. For a first evening, start with the beach options and then pick a dinner spot from the best restaurants.

Weather, Seasickness, and Schedule Risks

Mornings are generally calmer. The Lombok Strait can get choppy in the afternoon, especially in the wet season, which one source places between November and March. Check marine forecasts on the BMKG weather agency before you book a tight connection. Seasickness-prone travelers should book the earliest sailing. Operators also describe their larger vessels as steadier, though that is marketing and not verified. Weather can cancel sailings, so leave slack around flights. Seasonal planning is covered in our season-by-season timing guide. For entry rules, use Indonesia's official tourism site and verify on government pages.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most ferry problems come from assumptions about schedules and transfers. One travel guide describes a couple who missed a boat by under 20 minutes and found no later departure. Avoid these errors.

Good to know

Miss a boat by under 20 minutes and no later sailing may exist, so departures from Gili Air between 08:15 and 11:30 leave little slack.

  • Assuming another boat leaves soon after a missed one. Afternoon sailings are limited.
  • Booking the cheapest operator for a tight flight connection.
  • Ignoring port tax, which most operators charge separately at the harbor.
  • Choosing Padang Bai for the airport without pricing the 90-minute-plus taxi.
  • Arriving at Bangsal without a plan for touts and mixed prices.
  • Relying on Amed without confirming the route currently runs.
