Last updated November 2026: how to get to Gili Air comes down to three routes. Fast boats leave Bali ports such as Padang Bai, Sanur and Serangan, with roughly 1.5-2 hours on the water per one dive-shop source. Public boats cross from Bangsal on Lombok in about 20 minutes, so confirm every fare and departure time locally before you travel.

Quick Answer: The Best Way to Get to Gili Air

Most travelers should book a fast boat from Bali and choose the port closest to where they sleep. Bali Ferries lists about 2 hours from Padang Bai and about 1 hour from Amed. Budget travelers can fly to Lombok and take the Bangsal public boat, reported at roughly Rp 18,000-23,000. Source pages for this guide range from December 2023 to 2026, so treat every figure as a reported range and check the live schedule.

A simple route graphic works best here. Place the Bali departure ports on one side: Padang Bai, Sanur, Serangan and Amed. Add Bangsal and Teluk Nare (also spelled Teluk Nara) on Lombok. Then draw Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air in a line, with Meno in between. Gili Island Transfers lists speedboat times of 5 minutes from Air to Meno, 10 minutes from Air to Trawangan and 5 minutes from Air to Teluk Nare. Longer arrows from Bali show the 1-4 hour crossings covered below.

Bali to Gili Air by Fast Boat

Fast boats are the default for most visitors. Next Level Scuba reports about 1.5-2 hours on the water, excluding the ride to the harbor. Bali Ferries lists Padang Bai departures between 08:30 and 13:15, mostly at 1 hour 55 minutes to 2 hours 25 minutes. Sanur, Serangan and Nusa Penida sailings are listed at roughly 2.5-4 hours. Here is a simple port rule. Sleeping in the south or around Sanur and Serangan? Compare Padang Bai against a longer direct sailing from your own harbor. Staying in the east? Check Amed, listed at about 1 hour. Hotel pickup is often bundled into packages, but verify that when you book. Bali Ferries advertises 28 daily sailings, which is a booking-site figure worth confirming. Rough seas can delay crossings, so see the best season for calm crossings. You can also check sea forecasts with Indonesia's weather agency. For port-by-port detail, read our Bali departure port guide. Operator comparisons sit in the Gili Air ferry guide.

Lombok to Gili Air via Bangsal

Fly into Lombok International Airport at Praya, then continue by road to Bangsal harbor. Next Level Scuba puts that drive at roughly 2 hours from the airport and 30 minutes from Senggigi. Buy a ticket at the beachfront office for around Rp 20,000. Public boats leave only when full, at about 37 people according to Bali Untold. Reported waits run from about 20 minutes to a couple of hours. Sources disagree on hours: one says 08:00-16:00, another says 07:00-17:00. A booking site also lists hourly Bangsal departures from 09:00 to 16:00, so confirm at the ticket office. Port tax is reported at roughly Rp 10,000 or Rp 20,000 per person depending on the island. If you land late, arrange a private boat instead. Teluk Nare is a second Lombok departure point, listed 5 minutes from Gili Air.

Getting to Gili Air from Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno

Three boat types connect the islands. The public slow boat, called the Island Hopper, runs twice daily each way. Bali Untold's December 2023 timetable shows Gili T departures at 9:30am and 4pm, arriving at Air around 10am and 4:30pm. Fares are reported at Rp 40,000-45,000. Meno to Air takes about 15 minutes by slow boat. Gili T to Air takes about 30 minutes because the boat stops at Meno. Speedboats cut that to about 10-15 minutes from Gili T and about 5 minutes from Meno. One source lists an hourly public speedboat at Rp 80,000, while another suspects it has ended. Do not plan around it. Private charters have no fixed prices. Reports range from Rp 100,000 per person for a group to about Rp 300,000 one way. Kayaking works only between Gili T and Gili Meno, about 800 m apart. It is not a route to Air, and paddleboards or swimming are unsafe in the boat traffic. Ideas for hopping between the islands are in our day trips to the other Gilis.

Which Route Is Right for You?

Match the route to your timing and budget. Arriving in the afternoon matters most, since Bangsal public boats stop around 16:00-17:00. Groups and late arrivals often do better with a charter. Travelers already on Gili T or Meno can use the 2 daily slow boats if their schedule is flexible.

Tip

Arrivals after the Bangsal boats stop around 16:00-17:00 have no taxi on the island's pier, so a private charter becomes the fallback.

Arriving on Gili Air: Port, Cash, Cidomos, and Getting to Your Stay

No motorized vehicles run on the island, so there is no taxi at the pier. Walk, rent a bike, or hire a cidomo, the horse-drawn cart. Next Level Scuba quotes Rp 150,000-200,000, depending on passengers and bags. Carry cash for tickets and port tax. Bali Untold says all three Gilis now have working ATMs, though you should not count on one at arrival. Once settled, browse things to do on Gili Air and Gili Air's beaches. Hungry after the crossing? Good to know

Bangsal tickets cost around Rp 20,000, yet the cidomo from the pier is quoted at Rp 150,000-200,000 once you land.

Mistakes to Avoid

Six errors cause most missed boats and wasted money. Check each against your plan before you book.

  • Arriving at Bangsal after about 16:00 with no boat left.
  • Carrying no cash for tickets and port tax of roughly Rp 10,000-20,000.
  • Booking a flight or onward connection too soon after a late ferry.
  • Assuming a Gili T to Air boat runs hourly on a fixed schedule.
  • Swimming or paddleboarding between islands.
  • Expecting a wheeled taxi at the pier.
