Last updated November 2026: how to get to Gili Trawangan depends on where you start. From Bali, take a fast boat from Serangan or Padang Bai. From Lombok, take a public boat from Bangsal. Door-to-door, expect most of a day from southern Bali, so use the comparison table below to pick a route, then check current schedules and prices with the operator.
How to Get to Gili Trawangan: Route Comparison
Every route ends at the Gili T harbour on the island's east side. Fast boats from Bali cost roughly Rp 300,000 to Rp 600,000 one way, according to an operator page. That is a marketing figure, so confirm it at booking. In good weather the crossing takes about 90 minutes. In heavy seas it can run two hours or more. From Bangsal, the public fast boat costs Rp 85,000 and the public outrigger Rp 25,000, per one competitor guide. Prices and times below are guides only. Verify before you book.
| Starting point | Mode | Sea time | Price tier | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Serangan, Bali | Fast boat | About 2.5 h | Rp 300,000–600,000 | South Bali stays |
| Padang Bai, Bali | Fast boat | 1.5–2 h | Rp 300,000–600,000 | Ubud, Candidasa, north Bali |

| Senggigi, Lombok | Chartered outrigger | About 1.5 h | Negotiate first | West-coast stays |

From Bali by Fast Boat: Serangan or Padang Bai
Choose the harbour by where you sleep. Serangan is about 30 minutes from the main south Bali tourist areas, but the sea leg is around 2.5 hours. Padang Bai is about 2 hours by road from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak and Sanur, then about 1.5 hours at sea. Staying in Ubud, Candidasa or north Bali makes Padang Bai the sensible pick. Sources disagree on sea time, with figures from 1.5 to 2.5 hours, so treat every number as a range. Gili Getaway runs from Serangan. Eka Jaya Fast Ferry and Blue Water Express use both harbours. Eka Jaya's larger boats carry 210 to 260 passengers. Full Bali logistics sit in our Bali to Gili guide. Boat types and operators are covered in the Gili Trawangan ferry guide.

- Padang Bai harbour fee: about Rp 10,000, with a receipt shown at the dock. Keep another Rp 10,000 in case of a second charge on arrival.
- Boarding at Padang Bai can take 20 to 45 minutes, with several boats loading at once.
- Most boats have no seating plan, so early arrivals choose seats. Large bags go in a separate compartment.
- Some boats stop at Nusa Lembongan or Nusa Penida first. Check the route on your ticket.
From Lombok Airport to Gili Trawangan via Bangsal
Lombok International Airport is on the mainland, and Gili Trawangan has no airport. Drivers wait in the arrivals hall. A taxi or private car to Bangsal Harbour takes roughly 1.5 to 1 hour 45 minutes. One competitor lists Rp 300,000 to Rp 350,000 as a guide. At Bangsal, buy tickets from the signposted offices on the beachfront, open 8am to 5pm. Public fast boats carry up to 60 people and run from 9am to 4pm, roughly hourly. They loop Gili Air (5 minutes), Gili Meno (10) and Gili Trawangan (15). Public outriggers carry up to 40 and leave each Gili once full. Boats to Gili T typically go every 20 to 30 minutes. Hotels often arrange speedboat transfers and airport pickups. Ask when you book. They cost more, but they remove the harbour hassle.

- Ignore touts at Bangsal. Walk straight to the ticket offices, where public and charter prices are posted.
- Negotiate before anyone carries your bags. Rp 10,000 per bag is a reasonable rate.
- Ignore claims that there is no return boat. Public transfers back do run.
Other Lombok Departure Points
Teluk Nara is a bay about 25 minutes' drive north of Senggigi and just before Bangsal. Teluk Kodek sits beside it. Dive companies and hotels moor boats here, and you can negotiate a private speedboat with local owners. Prices are slightly lower than at Bangsal, depending on your bargaining. From Senggigi, local outriggers leave the beachfront in front of the Art Markets. The trip takes about 1.5 hours, and you may get wet on the way back. Agree on the price before you step aboard. Senggigi dive centres also sell transfers, often with hotel pickup.
From Gili Air or Gili Meno
Hopping over from a neighbouring island takes 10 to 15 minutes. Public boats run from about 8am to 5pm, every 45 minutes to an hour. Fares of Rp 30,000 to Rp 60,000 are quoted for these hops, though Bangsal-based sources list lower. Ask at the harbour ticket office. Only some fast boats call at Meno, so you may need to change at Gili T. Our Gili day trip ideas cover island hopping in more detail.
Which Route Fits You
Match the route to your constraints, not just the fare. Skip the public Bangsal outrigger if you carry heavy luggage and have a tight schedule. Skip a last-boat departure the day before a flight.
A Rp 450,000 charter covers up to six people, so it makes sense only if your group is big enough to share it.
- First-timers: a pre-booked fast boat from Serangan or Padang Bai, with a hotel transfer if available.
- Budget travellers: the Rp 25,000 public outrigger from Bangsal, if you land early.
- Groups of four to six: a Rp 450,000 speedboat charter, split between you, covers up to 6 passengers.
- Motion-sickness-prone: choose larger boats and take medication before boarding.
- Late flights: arrange a hotel transfer or stay a night on the mainland.
- Connecting flights: leave a buffer day (see below).
Rough Seas, Delays and Cancellations
The Lombok Strait is deep, and waves can reach about 4 metres at certain times. Fast boats are often cancelled then. A competitor says this happens only a couple of times a year, but we could not verify a frequency. Check marine conditions with BMKG, Indonesia's meteorology agency, before you travel. Pick an operator that offers alternative transport or a refund if your trip is cancelled. Read those terms before choosing the cheapest ticket. Seasons shape the odds, and sources conflict on dates. See our best time to visit page instead. Never book a boat on the same day as a flight home. Leave a buffer day.
Arriving on Gili Trawangan
Motorised vehicles are prohibited on all three Gilis, so no taxis, cars or scooters wait at the harbour. Walk, take a cidomo (horse cart seating up to 4), or rent a bicycle. Bike rental averages about Rp 50,000. You can walk the whole coast in a couple of hours. For island context, Gili Eco Trust is a local conservation body. Plan your last stretch with our Gili T transport guide. Ask your hotel about luggage help, and compare options in where to stay on Gili T.
Budget about Rp 50,000 for a bike on the island, plus the Rp 10,000 per bag quoted at Bangsal.
Getting Back and Common Mistakes
Bali fast boats reportedly call at Gili T and Gili Air, then clear the port at Bangsal before heading back. Verify this when booking a return. Keep a printed or saved ticket, and carry cash for fees. Allow generous time for Lombok airport, since Bangsal to the airport can take around 1.5 hours. Once you land, plan your stay with our things to do guide. For wider planning, see Indonesia's official tourism site.
- Booking the cheapest ticket without checking cancellation terms.
- Choosing a harbour by price and ignoring the land leg.
- Scheduling a flight on the same day as the return boat.
- Letting touts handle bags or sell 'no return boat' claims.
- Assuming cars or scooters are available on arrival.
