Getting Around Gili Trawangan: Bikes, Cidomo & Walking
How to get around Gili Trawangan with no cars or motorbikes: walking, bike rental, cidomo costs, harbor-to-hotel tips, and getting between the Gilis.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: getting around Gili Trawangan means no taxis, cars or petrol motorbikes, only your feet, a bicycle or a cidomo horse cart. At roughly 7 km around, the island is small enough that most people need just one or two of those options. Here we sort out which option suits which traveler, with every price flagged as reported rather than fixed.

Getting Around Gili Trawangan: The Quick Answer
Gili T has no taxis or ride-hailing at the harbor. Visitors walk, cycle or hire a cidomo. Solo backpackers with light bags can simply walk to their room. Couples with suitcases should plan on a cidomo from the harbor. Anyone staying several nights on the sunset side gets good value from a bike. We'd pay for a cidomo only on arrival and rent a bike for the rest of the stay. Our reasoning rests on reported prices of IDR 40,000–50,000 per day for a bike and IDR 100,000–150,000 per cidomo ride. At the low end of those ranges, a full day of cycling costs about half of one cart ride. For what to do once you are settled, see our Gili Trawangan guide.

Your Options Compared
Every price below comes from competitor guides and is reported, not confirmed. Rates vary by shop and rental length, so confirm with your accommodation.

| Option | Reported cost | Speed | Luggage | Best for and watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Free | Most stays are a 10–30 minute walk from the harbor | Light bags only | Harbor strip stays; sand and no pavements |
| Bicycle | IDR 40,000–50,000 per day | Loop path in under about 1 hour | Daypack | Multi-day stays; cross-island paths are rough |
| Cidomo | IDR 100,000–150,000 per ride | Faster than hauling bags on sand | Suitcases fit | Agree the fare first; welfare is a values call |
| Electric scooter | Verify locally | Not applicable | Not applicable | Sources disagree on whether they are allowed |
| Public inter-island boat | Ask at the public boat harbor | Two fixed daily departures reported | Light bags | Missing the last one means staying overnight |
| Fast boat or private charter | About double the public boat (reported); charter negotiable | Quickest between islands | Easier with bags | Confirm price before boarding |
| Organized tour transfer | Varies by operator | Set by the tour | Ask the operator | Best bundled with snorkel or day trips |
From the Harbor to Your Room
Most accommodation sits within a 10–30 minute walk of the harbor, according to Mad Monkey's transport notes. Stays on the east coast near Jalan Ikan Hiu and the harbor strip are closest. Sunset-coast stays need a longer walk or a short bike ride. One hostel on that coast reports about 30 minutes on foot. Pay the reported harbor fee of IDR 10,000 in cash, since cards are not always accepted there. Our rule is simple. A backpack means walking. A suitcase on a long sandy route means a cidomo. Before booking a far-side room, read our guide to where to stay. For the crossing itself, see how to reach the island.

- Harbor strip and east coast: walkable, even with a rolling bag.
- Sunset and west coast: bike or cidomo, depending on luggage.
- Quieter north and south pockets: ask your host for the exact walk before you book.
Walking on Gili T
Walking works best for short hops around the harbor strip. Paths are sandy and there are no pavements, so rolling cases struggle. A newer walking and running track reportedly leads from the harbor toward sunset point. Locals and visitors jog there around sunset, and mornings are cooler. We would not walk the full 7 km perimeter in midday heat. For swims and snorkel spots along the way, our beach guide maps the stops.
Renting a Bicycle: Costs, Route and Tips
Bike rental is reported at IDR 40,000–50,000 per day. A multi-day rental from your hotel is reportedly cheaper per day than renting daily. A loop path follows the coast and takes under about 1 hour to ride. Cycling east to west takes about 30 minutes at most. Cross-island paths are harder, especially with a loaded bike. Check the brakes, the light and the lock before you leave the shop. Locking the bike at your hotel overnight is easier than returning it to a stall. Rain turns paths muddy, so read our note on the best time to visit.
Cycling east to west takes 30 minutes at most, while sunset-coast stays need a longer walk or a short bike ride.
Cidomo: When It's Worth It and How to Agree a Price
A cidomo costs around IDR 100,000–150,000 per ride, reportedly rising with distance and luggage. Name the destination and agree the fare before you climb aboard. Three people sharing a IDR 150,000 ride pay IDR 50,000 each. That matches one day of bike rental at the top reported rate. Animal welfare is a personal call. One guide advises walking or cycling instead, citing heat and workload, though we could not verify conditions ourselves. If the ethics bother you, choose a room within walking distance of the harbor.
Electric Scooters and Other Options: What to Verify
Sources disagree on electric scooters. One guide says some have been allowed since 2025, while another lists them beside bicycles and horses. We found no confirmed rule, so ask your accommodation before relying on one. For general national travel information, try the official Indonesia tourism site. For island conservation notices, the Gili Eco Trust is a local organization worth checking.
Getting Around at Night
Most bars reportedly close around midnight, with one staying open later. Schedules change often, so ask your hotel. Paths are unlit in places, and late-night traffic can include tired or drunk riders. Carry a bike light, or leave the bike at your hotel and walk. A cidomo is the fallback after a long night, but carry small cash. Our nightlife guide covers where the evening tends to start.
Moving Between Gili T, Gili Meno and Gili Air
The public boat reportedly leaves Gili T at 9am and 4:30pm. Tickets are sold near the public boat harbor, opposite the Eka Jaya office. A fast boat costs about double the public hop. One writer reports the whole island-hopping loop takes about 15 minutes at most. Another group reported negotiating IDR 50,000 each for a private transfer to Gili Meno, for five people one way. Miss the last boat and you sleep on the wrong island. Plan trips with our day trip ideas. Ferry schedules are covered in our ferry guide. Guided options sit in our tours roundup.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems come from assuming this island works like Bali. Plan transport before you land, and keep the island hub handy via our things to do page.
- Expecting taxis or ride-hailing at the harbor with heavy luggage.
- Booking a far-side room without checking the walk or ride from the harbor.
- Renting a bike by the day for a multi-day stay.

- Boarding a cidomo before agreeing the fare.
