Getting Around Jakarta: MRT, TransJakarta, Grab and Gojek
How to get around Jakarta as a visitor: MRT, TransJakarta, KRL, LRT, Grab/Gojek and taxis, with payment cards, airport options and traffic tips.
On this page
Last updated November 2026. Getting around Jakarta works best as a mix: rail or TransJakarta for the main corridors, and Grab or Gojek for the last stretch. Set up an e-money card and a ride-hailing app before day one, then use the quick-pick table below to match each trip to a mode. For what to see once you are moving, start with our Jakarta sightseeing guide.

Getting around Jakarta: the short answer

Use the MRT for the Sudirman spine, TransJakarta for routes rail does not reach, and ride-hailing for door-to-door hops. Traffic, not distance, decides most journeys. A 5 km trip by road can take longer than a 15 km ride on rails. Fares and timetables change, so treat every figure here as a lead and confirm it on the operator pages.
| Trip type | Best mode | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Airport to city | Airport rail link or ride-hailing | Rail is predictable; a car is door-to-door |
| Sudirman and Thamrin corridor | MRT | Station exits can mean long walks |
| Kota Tua and Monas | TransJakarta or KRL | Crowds at rush hour |
| SCBD nightlife and malls | Grab or Gojek | Surge pricing late at night and in rain |
| Day trips | KRL, intercity rail or bus | Separate stations for each operator |

Which transport to use: decision criteria
Start with time of day. Weekday rush hours choke the roads and fill trains, so rail wins for fixed appointments. Luggage changes the answer. Stairs and crowded carriages make a ride-hail car easier with two large bags. Budget points to TransJakarta and KRL, while heat and rain point to air-conditioned rail or a car. Late returns from bars favor ride-hailing, and our Jakarta bar guide covers where those trips tend to start. Time versus cost is the core trade-off: rails are cheaper and steadier, cars are faster only when roads are clear.

Get set up before you go
Buy a JakLingko or bank e-money card first. Brizzi (Bank BRI), TapCash (Bank BNI), e-Money (Bank Mandiri), Flazz (Bank BCA) and Jakcard (Bank Jakarta) are listed as accepted across KRL, TransJakarta, LRT, MRT and the airport rail link. Top up at Indomaret, Alfamart, Alfamidi, station machines or ATMs. Foreign-visitor rules can change, so check the counter or the operator site before buying. Install Grab and Gojek and link a payment method. Add a local eSIM or data plan, since every app needs a signal underground and in malls.

- Hour 1: buy a card and load a small balance.
- Hour 2: install Grab, Gojek and an offline map.
- Hour 3: save your hotel name in Indonesian script for drivers.
- Day 1: test one short MRT or bus ride before a long trip.
MRT, LRT and KRL Commuterline

Jakarta MRT's North-South line runs from Lebak Bulus to Bundaran HI. It has 13 stations over 15.7 km and opened on 24 March 2019. Check the MRT operator site for fares and hours. Two LRT systems exist. LRT Jakarta serves the north-east, while LRT Jabodebek began operating on 28 August 2023 and uses Dukuh Atas BNI as its city-side station. KRL Commuterline is the suburban network run by KAI Commuter. Its Manggarai interchange handles more than 100,000 boardings and alightings a day, so expect crowds. These are separate operators. The walk between stations at Dukuh Atas is the main friction, so allow extra minutes there. Women-only carriage rules should be verified on the KAI Commuter page.
TransJakarta buses and Mikrotrans
TransJakarta runs buses in dedicated lanes. Its first line, Corridor 1 from Blok M to Kota, opened in 2004. Wikipedia lists 14 corridors, so look at the TransJakarta route map and app for what runs today. Feeder routes and Mikrotrans minibuses reach streets the trunk lines skip. Board at the station platform, tap in and watch for women-only sections on some services. Keep bags in front of you during crowded periods.

Grab, Gojek, Blue Bird and ojek
Grab and Gojek cover cars and motorcycle taxis. Choose the car in rain or with luggage. Choose the ojek for short hops through heavy traffic. Insist on a helmet and keep your bag between your arms. Pickup points at malls and hotels are often fixed, so read the in-app pin carefully. Surge pricing rises after heavy rain and late at night. Blue Bird is one of the few conventional taxi brands Wikipedia names alongside Express, Gamya and Taxiku. Order a metered cab through its app or an official stand, never from touts. Compare the app fare with the meter before you accept either.
Airport to city

Soekarno-Hatta (CGK) offers rail, bus, taxi and ride-hailing, and tolls apply to road options. The airport rail link covers 54.3 km across five stations on its Manggarai line, and our notes point to BNI City as a city-side stop. Verify the current terminus and schedule on the airport operator site. Halim (HLP) handles some domestic flights, so confirm which airport your flight uses. Everything in the table is a planning note, not a quote.
A 5 km trip by road can take longer than a 15 km ride on rails. At the airport, the 54.3 km rail link stays predictable when traffic builds.
| Option | Time and cost | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Airport rail link | Verify with KAI | Solo travelers avoiding traffic |
| Airport bus | Verify with operator | Budget travelers with light bags |
| Metered taxi | Verify at official stand | Groups with luggage |
| Grab or Gojek | Verify in app, plus tolls | Late arrivals to hotels |
Getting to Kota Tua and the sightseeing core

For Old Town, KRL from Jakarta Kota station or TransJakarta Corridor 1 are the usual ways to arrive. Our Kota Tua walking guide covers what to see once you get there. Inside Kota Tua, bicycle taxis called ojek sepeda are available for short loops. Monas and Istiqlal sit close together, so one ride covers both. For deeper context, read about colonial-era Batavia before you go. Car-Free Day closes main avenues to traffic on set days, so verify the date and the routes in advance.
Intercity and day-trip transport
Long-distance trains leave from Gambir and Pasar Senen. Whoosh, the Jakarta-Bandung high-speed line, covers 142.3 km and is cited at about 30 minutes of run time. Add transfer time to and from the stations. Pulo Gebang is the biggest bus terminal, and Muara Angke is the public port for the Thousand Islands. Confirm departure points on the day. Our Jakarta day trip ideas show where each route leads. Arriving from Bali is covered in flights from Bali.
Traffic, timing and safety

Peak hours fall in the morning and early evening. Plan rail or bus around them. An odd-even plate policy began in 2016, but its current scope is unverified, so check before renting a car. Self-driving is rarely worth it for visitors. Rain slows everything, and our rainy season guide explains the pattern. In a downpour, move to MRT or wait for surge prices to ease. Watch for pickpockets on crowded KRL and buses. Wear bags in front, and keep phones out of reach of doors. Where you sleep matters too, as choosing a Jakarta base cuts transfers.
Manggarai interchange handles more than 100,000 boardings and alightings a day, which is why pickpocket warnings for KRL carry weight.
Sample routes and mistakes to avoid
Treat these as estimates and add buffers. For CGK to Menteng, allow generous time by road and check rail. For Kota Tua to Monas, a short ride by bus or car works. For a hotel to SCBD at night, use a car. For a Thousand Islands trip, be at Muara Angke early. Our Jakarta mall guide and nightlife guide help with the SCBD runs.
- Do not assume one card works unchecked; test it at a gate.
- Do not book tight connections between operators.
- Do not accept unmetered cabs without agreeing a price.
- Do not plan cross-city trips at peak hours.
- Do not rely on a single app when the signal drops.
