Last updated November 2026. Jakarta malls are the city's default answer to heat, rain and traffic, and the capital is often called the "City of a Thousand Malls". Pick by purpose (luxury, family, food or a weather escape) and by district, then cap your plan at two or three malls a day.

Quick answer: the best Jakarta malls at a glance

Ten malls come up again and again in Jakarta guides. They fall into five areas, so group them by location instead of ticking off names. The table below states the criterion for each pick. Opening hours are not listed because they change, so check each mall's official site before you go.

How to choose a Jakarta mall

Start with your hotel, not the mall's reputation. Traffic decides how many malls you can realistically visit, so a mall within one ride of your bed often beats a famous one across town. For luxury labels, look at Plaza Senayan, Senayan City and Pacific Place. For families, Pondok Indah Mall and Mal Taman Anggrek bring non-shopping draws such as outdoor dining and an ice rink. For food, Grand Indonesia, Kota Kasablanka and Gandaria City's dining street are the usual picks. If rain is the issue, our rainy season guide explains the pattern. Our note on the best time to visit covers heat. Check each mall's directory before you commit.

Central Jakarta and Senayan malls

Grand Indonesia sits near the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (Bundaran HI) in Central Jakarta. It is a good first stop because it combines shopping, restaurants and a musical fountain show. Check the Grand Indonesia official site for current show times. Plaza Senayan and Senayan City face each other in the Senayan area, according to a hotel guide. That makes them the easiest pair to combine on foot, though you should confirm the walking route on arrival. Plaza Senayan leans toward luxury boutiques and upscale Japanese restaurants. Senayan City pairs high-end brands with offices and residences. Pacific Place is in the SCBD business district. Its anchor is a French department store, Galeries Lafayette, spread over four floors according to the same source.

South Jakarta malls

Pondok Indah Mall (PIM) has operated since 1991 and now has three interconnected sections: PIM 1, PIM 2 and PIM 3. Its open-air "Street Gallery" suits an evening meal, and our nightlife guide covers the after-dark side of the city. Gandaria City, nicknamed "GanCit" locally, is known for its Main Street dining area. Kota Kasablanka, called "Kokas", is in Tebet and is known for interiors inspired by Moroccan palaces. All three are south of the Centre, so treat them as a separate half-day trip from Senayan.

West and North Jakarta malls

Mal Taman Anggrek in West Jakarta draws families with an indoor ice rink and a long LED facade that lights up at night. Competitor guides disagree on its size, so rely on the mall's own site for figures. Central Park is also in Grogol, West Jakarta, and has a pet-friendly outdoor dining area. Both are best paired with each other and not with Senayan. Mall Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta is the farthest trip for most visitors. Its draws are Gading Walk, a semi-outdoor dining hub, and two large food courts. Add extra travel time and treat it as a standalone outing.

Sample one-day mall plans

These are illustrative plans, with no timings because traffic varies. Each stays at two or three malls.

  • Luxury day: Plaza Senayan, then Senayan City across the way, then Pacific Place in SCBD if energy remains.
  • Food and fountain day: Grand Indonesia for lunch and the fountain show, then an evening ride to Pondok Indah's Street Gallery.
  • Family day: Mal Taman Anggrek for the ice rink, then Central Park for outdoor dining, both in West Jakarta.
  • Rainy-day plan: Pick the mall closest to your hotel and stay put.

Getting there, payment and opening hours

Ride-hailing with Grab or Gojek is the simplest option, because Indonesia.travel notes both apps drop you at the lobby entrance. That saves you from crowded parking garages. For MRT, TransJakarta and driving trade-offs, read our Getting Around Jakarta: MRT, TransJakarta, Grab and Gojek guide. Check station names and fares with the Jakarta MRT operator before you rely on rail. Most malls open at 10:00 AM according to Indonesia.travel, and Pondok Indah is listed from 09:00 AM. Those hours are unverified, so confirm them on each mall's site. Almost all tenants accept cards, e-wallets and QRIS, but keep some cash for small vendors.

Tip

Pondok Indah's listed hours start at 09:00 AM, an hour before most malls, so it suits a weekday morning start.

Shopping tips and mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Go on a weekday morning to dodge crowds and make parking easier. Bring a light layer, because the air conditioning inside is cold against the heat outside. Sale periods such as the "Jakarta Great Sale" reportedly offer discounts up to 70%, per Indonesia.travel. Tourist privilege cards may add markdowns on showing a passport. Confirm both before you plan around them. The biggest mistake is trying to cover four malls in a day. Cross-city transfers eat the afternoon. If you only have a short trip, skip malls and see our Jakarta markets guide. Our museums guide and the Old Town guide are also good alternatives. Our 8 Things to Do in Jakarta: Sights by Area & Day Plans hub covers the rest.

Tip

Sale periods reportedly reach 70%, so pair them with the two-or-three-mall cap rather than adding stops.

Where to stay near the malls

Staying in Central Jakarta near Bundaran HI puts Grand Indonesia within a short ride. Senayan and SCBD put you near four malls. South Jakarta suits a Pondok Indah-focused trip.
