Last updated November 2026: north Bali is the quieter side of the island, covering the Buleleng coast around Lovina plus the highland lakes near Munduk and Bedugul. It suits waterfall fans and travelers who want to skip south Bali crowds, and we'd give it at least two nights. Mount Batur sits on the edge of this area, so we cover it briefly and send overlap questions to East Bali Travel Guide: Temples, Coast & Costs.

Is North Bali Worth It? Quick Answer

Go if you like waterfalls, hiking and cooler highland air, or if you have three or more nights. Skip it, or settle for a day trip, if you have only 2–3 days in Bali or hate long drives. Competitor guides put the drive from the airport to Lovina at about 3 hours. Traffic changes that, so verify before you book. Our pick for most visitors is one night in Munduk or Lovina, with a stop at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on the way. North Bali at a Glance: Where Is It and What Counts?

We treat north Bali as three areas. The Lovina and Buleleng coast is the first. The Munduk and Bedugul highlands, with Buyan and Tamblingan lakes, are the second. Mount Batur and Kintamani are the third, and administratively they belong to Bangli rather than Buleleng. For Menjangan snorkeling and the national park, see West Bali Guide: Is the Detour Worth It?. Singaraja's colonial harbor and the Gedong Kirtya library suit a short culture stop, and Pura Beji is a temple detour. Check opening hours locally for both. Use the table below to choose a base.

How to Get to North Bali

There is no international airport in the north. Most visitors fly into Denpasar's Ngurah Rai and drive. From Java, the ferry lands at Bali's northwest tip, and nomadicated.com puts the onward ride to Lovina at about 2 hours. A one-way route through the highlands, such as south Bali to Bedugul to Munduk to Lovina, wastes less driving than an out-and-back day trip. One source reports the nearest ride-hailing pickup at the airport is about 1 km away, so check current rules. Our Gojek guide covers the app, and our Bali SIM card guide covers data. Coming from Java? Our East Java guide helps with the earlier leg.

Good to know

Coming from Java, the onward ride to Lovina is about 2 hours, while the airport route is about 3 hours by competitor estimates.

Group your day by area, not by list. On the Lovina coast, dolphin trips leave around 6 a.m. Some travelers report that boats chase the animals, so read recent reviews and vet the operator. Brahma Vihara Arama and Banjar Hot Springs sit close together. The springs run about 38°C across three pools. In the highlands, Banyumala takes about 20 minutes to walk to. Git-Git is a 35 m fall with a roughly 20-minute walk, and it is crowded. Handara Gate costs Rp30,000 and the photo queue can run from 5 minutes to 2 hours. We'd skip that queue unless photos matter. Ulun Danu Beratan is a better use of the same hour. Mount Batur is the crowd decision. One source reports about 500 hikers at sunrise, a 1.5-hour ascent and summit temperatures down to 12°C. Sunset avoids the crowd. Munduk Bunbulan is a gentler 20-minute sunrise walk. Guide rules at Batur can change, so check the latest guidance at Indonesia Travel.

How Many Days to Plan: 1-, 2- and 3-Night Itineraries

Route logic beats cramming. From a south Bali base, a day trip works if you limit it to Bedugul, Git-Git and one more stop. Choose a one-way route if you can sleep over.

  • Day trip from south Bali: Ulun Danu Beratan, Git-Git, then back before dark.
  • One night: Bedugul stop, Munduk waterfalls, sleep in Munduk or Lovina.
  • Two nights: add Lovina dolphins at about 6 a.m. and Banjar Hot Springs.
  • Three nights: add Sekumpul and a Batur sunset or Bunbulan sunrise, then exit toward East Bali Travel Guide: Temples, Coast & Costs.

Costs, Tickets, Guides and Cash

Nomadicated.com reports most attraction fees at roughly Rp10,000–50,000. Sekumpul is tiered at about Rp20,000 for viewing, Rp125,000 for a medium trek and Rp200,000 for a long trek. Banyumala is about Rp30,000. Aling-Aling is about Rp125,000 to jump with a guide or about Rp10,000 for viewing. These figures come from 2022–2023 pages and we have not rechecked them, so confirm on site. Carry rupiah in small notes for remote sites. Our rupiah guide covers cash, and Tipping in Bali: Who to Tip and How Much (IDR) covers guides and drivers. Check Bank Indonesia for currency basics.

Tip

Three-night plans that include Sekumpul can mean Rp200,000 for a long trek, so budget cash for it alongside a Batur sunset.

Where to Stay in North Bali

Pick one base from the table above and stick with it. Lovina fits calm-sea and dolphin plans. Munduk fits waterfalls and cooler nights. Kintamani fits an early Batur start. Competitors list resorts, but we'd rather you check recent reviews than rely on a 2023 recommendation. For other settings, our Bali villages guide offers alternative bases.

Best Time to Visit and Weather Pitfalls

Sponsored

Wet-season rain makes waterfall trails slippery and highland roads slower, and fog can hide lake views. Dry months are easier on trails but bring bigger crowds at Batur. Check the BMKG forecast before committing to a trek. Our Best Time to Visit Indonesia: Month-by-Month + Region Guide page covers the wider picture.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Overpacking the itinerary is the most common error. Arriving at Sekumpul without cash is the next. Skipping a guide where one is required is a safety issue, especially for canyoning and cliff jumping. Wear a sarong at temples, since most sites rent them near the entrance. Avoid driving the highlands at night or in rain. Finally, do not book a dolphin boat before reading recent reviews.
