Last updated November 2026. For most first-timers, the best Bali dance show is the Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple at sunset. Ubud's evening stage shows trade the cliff-top setting for an easier, walkable night. Our guide compares both, plus tour-package evenings, and links back to our Bali trip planning hub.

Searchers usually weigh venue against format. Uluwatu gives you the sea, the sunset and fire. Ubud gives you Legong and Barong on a stage, close to restaurants. Tour-package evenings in Kuta trade choice for pickup. Every figure below is a lead to confirm before you go.

Each dance tells a different kind of story. Pick by the type of drama you want, not just the venue.

  • Kecak: roughly 50-60 chanting men sit in a circle and chant "chak" with no instruments. Torches burn at the center as the Ramayana unfolds.
  • Legong: a classical dance for the Ubud Palace and Ubud's Pura Dalem stages. Expect precise hand and eye movement.
  • Barong and Keris: staged at Batubulan. Barong is the protective lion-like creature, and the Keris dance involves daggers.
  • Ubud evening stages: programs rotate between dances, so check which one plays on your night.

Kecak Plot Cheat Sheet

Rama is exiled for 14 years with his wife Shinta and his brother Lakshmana. King Rahwana abducts Shinta. Hanoman, the white Monkey, searches for her and is captured by Rahwana's troops. He escapes through fire and burns the palace instead. Rama and the Monkey warriors then defeat Rahwana. Knowing this outline lets you follow the chanting without a translator.

Tickets, Costs and Booking a Bali Dance Show

At Uluwatu, a 2023 hotel blog listed two separate payments: Rp30,000 for temple entry and Rp150,000 for the Kecak ticket. Treat those as stale leads and confirm both amounts, the payment method and whether advance tickets exist. Ubud and Batubulan prices are not confirmed in our sources, so check the venue directly. Tour packages bundle the ticket with transport, which can suit Kuta and Seminyak bases. Compare the package price against the two direct payments before you book. Timing and How to Plan the Evening

Search snippets point to two Uluwatu sessions, around 6 PM and 7 PM. Confirm the current times before you go. Arrive early for the best seats in the amphitheatre. Sunset depends on weather, so do not count on it in the rainy season. Pair the show with an afternoon on the cliffs and one of the south Bali beaches. Plan dinner afterward. For a different light, compare it with a Bali sunrise outing. Pairing shows with other stops is easier with our Bali day trip ideas.

Good to know

With roughly 50-60 chanting men in a circle, arriving early matters for the best amphitheatre seats.

Getting There and Where to Base Yourself

Uluwatu is a long round trip from Ubud, so verify drive times with a mapping app. Staying in Ubud puts Legong at Ubud Palace within walking distance. Staying in Kuta or Seminyak suits a tour pickup. Booking a ride home matters at Uluwatu after dark. Read our guide to using Grab in Bali before you rely on it. Riding yourself? Our Bali scooter guide covers the basics. Confirm ride availability near the temple before the show ends.

Tip

Pairing sessions around 6 PM and 7 PM with a long round trip from Ubud leaves little slack for a late ride.

Etiquette, Safety and Practical Tips

Visitors wear a sarong to enter Uluwatu Temple, and our source says one is provided before entry. Keep glasses, phones and hats secure around the temple monkeys. Expect stairs and uneven stone seating. Bring mosquito repellent and a layer for rain. Do not climb onto the stage, and ask before photographing performers up close.

  • Families: check the show length first, since a long evening can stretch a child's attention.
  • Budget: compare packages against direct tickets.
  • Rainy day: choose an Ubud stage over an open cliff.
  • Skip it if: you dislike crowds or late drives.

Mistakes to Avoid

Most problems come from planning, not the performance.

  • Assuming one ticket covers everything at Uluwatu, since temple entry and the show were listed separately.
  • Arriving at showtime and losing good seats.
  • Counting on a clear sunset in the rainy season.
  • Booking a ride home too late.
  • Treating any price in this guide as final.

History in Brief: From Sanghyang to Kecak

Sponsored

Kecak grew out of Sanghyang, a sacred dance in which a divine force enters the performer. Variants include Sanghyang Dedari and Sanghyang Jaran. In the 1930s, Wayan Limbak and Walter Spies reportedly shaped a stage version around the Ramayana. Verify that account with a museum or academic source before quoting it.
