Aim for April, May or June if you want green hills, little rain and calm seas. September to November suits you if you want thinner crowds. Sources disagree on the shoulder months, so match the month to your goal rather than chasing one perfect window. Trips start in Labuan Bajo, and our Komodo tour options show how boat itineraries fit each season.

Labuan Bajo has a wet season that starts around December and runs to March, then a long dry season. Dry-season days often sit near 32°C (90°F) on land, and wet-season days near 30°C (86°F). Nights on the water can feel closer to 24°C (75°F). Treat those as rough planning figures and check BMKG climate data before you book. Our Flores weather guide covers rainfall in more depth.

Good to know

Nights on the water can feel closer to 24°C (75°F), so boat evenings run cooler than dry-season days on land.

Best Time to See Komodo Dragons

Dragons live on Komodo and Rinca all year, and rangers guide you to them in every season. Dive writers say April is strong, because the dry sun draws the animals out after the rains. Nesting reduces sightings, but sources give two windows: August to September, or September to November. Confirm the current timing with the park authority before you plan around it. Diving is rated good all year, and the best month depends on the animals you want. January and February are reported to bring the clearest water and southern sites, but also rain. Mantas are possible in most months, though they move south around May and June. They are reported to return to central Komodo around October. August is the month named for mola mola. Southern sites reportedly need a liveaboard. Some sites have strong currents, so beginners should tell the operator before booking.

Crowds, Prices and Booking Lead Time

June to August is peak season, so boats and dive sites fill first. Book earlier for those months and for school-holiday weeks. As an illustration only, not a quote, a shared day trip priced near Rp1,200,000 in April or October could climb toward Rp1,600,000 in July or August. Ask operators for current rates, and confirm park fees on the official tourism site. Our Komodo tours page is the next step once you pick a month. Day add-ons are listed on the Labuan Bajo tours page.

Tip

An illustrative shared trip could climb toward Rp1,600,000 in July or August, so do not assume peak-season boats have spare places at short notice.

Calm seas in May and June make long crossings between Komodo, Padar and Rinca easier. Wet months bring more wind, and flights can be delayed, so leave buffer days at both ends. Read how to reach Komodo for the routes. For flights, see the Labuan Bajo airport guide. If you connect from Bali, the Labuan Bajo to Bali page covers the options.

Mistakes to Avoid When Timing Your Trip

Avoid these common timing errors:

  • Booking a tight flight connection in January or February.
  • Expecting green hills in September to November.
  • Assuming mantas appear in May or June.
  • Skipping park rules and fee checks before you pay a deposit.
  • Assuming peak-season boats will have spare places at short notice.
