Last updated November 2026: Bali babi guling is Balinese suckling pig, rubbed with spice paste and roasted on a spit. Warungs roast in the morning and sell out by early afternoon, so plan an early meal. We start with Ibu Oka and Gung Cung in Ubud, then add Pak Dobiel in Nusa Dua for anyone staying south.

What Babi Guling Is (and What's on the Plate)

Babi guling is a whole young pig, smothered in bumbu (spice paste) and turned over fire. At Ibu Oka, a 2017 VICE/Munchies account describes cooks basting the pig with coconut milk and resting it over smoldering coconut husks for extra smoke. One pitmaster there was turning the spit for five hours. Bali's Hindu majority eats pork freely, unlike most of Indonesia. Ordering is easier once you know the parts of a typical plate.

  • Pork meat: sliced or pulled, often tender enough to separate by hand.
  • Crackling skin: roasted until brittle, the part most people come for.
  • Bumbu: the spice paste. Recipes are closely guarded, so we keep ingredient claims general.
  • Rice: the base of the plate.
  • Pork satay and blood sausage: sides described in the 2017 VICE account.
  • Long beans: a green counterpoint to the richness.
  • Bone broth: turmeric-tinted, served alongside at Gung Cung.

Where to Eat Babi Guling in Bali: Quick Comparison

Our shortlist comes from the two usable sources in our brief, both dated. VICE (2017) names three warungs, and addresses below are as printed then. Hours and prices were not published in any current source we could use. Confirm that each is open before you travel, using the venue's own channel or a current map listing.

Good to know

Jalan Srikandi No. 9 is a 2017 printed address, so check it against a current map before heading out.

How to Choose: Famous Warung vs. Modest Local Spot

Ibu Oka is the best-known name. VICE's writer says it has been on the tourist trail for years yet still delivers, and reports that Anthony Bourdain praised it. Treat that as attributed, not confirmed. It has grown to three branches: a canteen (Ibu Oka 1), a full restaurant near the edge of town (Ibu Oka 2) and Ibu Oka 3. Expect crowds at the famous branches. We'd pick Gung Cung if you want a second style. VICE found its meat a little drier and its skin more brittle than Ibu Oka's. Chef Eelke Plasmeijer of Locavore in Ubud pointed the writer there. He also noted that heritage black pigs, babi Bali asli, were nearly the only breed used until the 1980s and are now rare. You are unlikely to find them on a plate. Modest roadside spots are the alternative. VICE says a motorbike ride through Ubud's outskirts passes about half a dozen. They are likely cheaper and quieter, but quality varies, and we can't vouch for any by name. For the wider eating scene, browse other Balinese warung.

Timing, Prices, and Logistics

Roasting happens in the morning, and sources agree plates sell out by early afternoon. Target Gung Cung before 10 AM, and treat that as a guide, not a guarantee. We could not find a current published price. A 2012 blog paid Rp30,000 for a special plate at Ibu Oka, which is only a historical marker. Check posted menus on site. Bring cash in case a small warung does not take cards. We could not verify that either way. Reaching Ibu Oka 3 on Jalan Tegal Sari from central Ubud is a short trip by walking, scooter or ride-hailing, but confirm the current location first. Pak Dobiel on Jalan Srikandi suits travelers based in Nusa Dua who are not heading to Ubud. We'd pair an Ubud meal with a morning market or temple visit, then eat at the first opening hour.

Tip

Target Gung Cung before 10 AM if you prefer its drier meat and brittle skin, since warungs sell out by early afternoon.

Who Should Skip It or Adapt

Muslim travelers and anyone avoiding pork should skip this dish. Babi guling is pork, so it is not halal. Bali's Hindu majority makes it widely available, which is why the island feels different from the rest of Indonesia. It is also rich. VICE quotes a Balinese motorbike driver who says locals do not eat it every day and usually stick to vegetables. Order a smaller plate if you are unsure, and ask about chili. For plant-based meals, start with vegan food in Bali. For fish instead of pork, try seafood spots across Bali. For wider dining context, see our Bali restaurant guide. Curious how spice pastes are built? Casa Luna's cooking school lists current classes, and Bali cooking classes compares more options. Check whether any menu includes pork.

Mistakes to Avoid

Most disappointments are timing or planning errors, not bad pork. These are the ones we'd flag.

  • Arriving late: warungs sell out by early afternoon.
  • Assuming Ibu Oka is the only good option: Gung Cung and Pak Dobiel are named in the brief.
  • Ordering blind: learn the plate parts above before you queue.
  • Trusting old prices: Rp30,000 dates from 2012.
  • Ignoring geography: Ubud and Nusa Dua are different trips.
